Off to the ColleeeH?Interesting Per*
Honal Note*-Farn> Newt and Other
items.
Lowndesvllle, Sept. 24, 1900.
Miss Lulie VVagDaer, or Charleston, came In
Monday for a visit to Mr. E. Wv Harper and
family.
There were two latter day Mints In oar
town Monday. They were KB usual distributing
their beloved literature to all wb6 would
receive It. They did noteren give out mutfi
of it as our people are atul dlapoeed to bold to
th?lr belief that the '.'old time religion" is
good enough for them and are not reedy for
unyinew departure# along than line,
Miss Meta and Mis# Vera Allen left Monday
morning to enter Cooper Llm^atone Institute,
Oaflney, South Carolina.
| MIsb Leila Belle McCalla started upon her
return to Wlnthrop College the first of last
l week. /, .*4. ,
Miss Ada Fennel took tbe train Tuesday
morning for Ashevllle, N. C., where she will
re-enter the Female College.
Mr. R. O. Ficquett and family moved Into
the Franks House on Main Street last week.
He is manager of tbe oil mill and ginnery
machinery, and will be here for several
months, at least while his services are needed
in the above indastry.
MaJ. and Mrs. F. W. R. Nance, of Abbeville,
,< came up Monday?tbe first named on business
oonneoted with the coming October
Court.
Monday evening and night, there was a
considerable obange in tbe temperature. For
a part of Tuesday and Wednesday, fires and
warmer clothing added comfort to tbe lean
and bony folk, bat it was just cold enough to
make tbe fat ones feel good.
Last week's Press and Banner gives ofabout
sixty of Abbeville County's young men and
> maidens who are in different oolleges seeking
higher education. This showing tells well for
old Abbeville. There might have been added
to the number given several others, who have
gone, or will very soon go from this place,
t Miss Carrie Gunnels Is in Williamston
L Female College, Misses Meta and Vera Allen,
I * limestone Institute. Mr. E.F.Latimer, AtlanI*
Dental College, Mr. John McCalla, Wofford,
1 Dr. C. J. Harper, Baltimore Medical College,
r Is there a country In the State that can beat
this record.
Messrs. Meta andLenaBrownlee, of Penny's
CreeS, and Miss Jtime w aison, ui nurreuiuu,
who was visiting tbem, spent several days of
the past week with the family of the uncle of
the two first naned, Mr. E. W. Harper.
Mrs. E. J. Barnes was with friends In
' Anderson for several days last week.
Mrs. Lee Cleveland and her grand-daughter,
Miss Kate Adams, of Ruckersvllle, Ga., passed
through this place one day last week on
their way to visit relatives In Anderson. The
first named was "born and raised in this
place. Her father. Mr. Tom Rowsey, oocu?led
the bouse now owned and lived in by
tr. W. Li. Broadwell. Mrs. Cleveland Das liv?d
within ten miles of this. her childhood
' home, tor n?ar -V)yours, awl never revisited It
but ouce belor? last week and that was about
two months ago.
Mr. Walter Boyd, his sister, ilUs Ktlie Boyd,
and Miss Kittle Grant, of Mt. Carmel, came
up Thursday and were the guests of Mrs.
; Robert Hester till Saturday.
Rev. T. H. Plemmous, of Abbeville, reached
here Friday evening and remained here till
Saturday morning.
Dr. C. C. Brown, of Sumter, came in Friday.
Tbat night at 8:30, p. m. filled bis engagement
to deliver bis famous lecture upon
"The Humorous side of Courtship and Mar
rlage," in our school building. The greater
part of our cltlzenB were In attendance. The
> audience was well pleased, judging from the
laughter that was much in evidence. We
hope to have him again In the future,
f Mrs. Bettie Kennedv who has spent the
most of the summer with relatives in other
places, returned to her home here with her
brother, Mr. S. Baker on Saturday,
k Fodder pulling Is about over and this year
k In this Township it was an unusually short
I and easy Job, with a large majority of our
l planters. With them it was more In name
r than in fact. The planting community has
' for years based its hopes for a corn and fodder
1 supply almost entirely upon their bottom
I lands. These entirely failed tbem. It has
only been a dernier resort tbat brought about
106 planting OI upianu vuru, uuu evou wuou
it was planted If anything like a paying yield
was realized it was more tban was expected.
No groat expectations ruled either in planting
or gathering. To this faot perhaps more than
any other was largely doe the common result.
If greater Interest bad been shown, in
better preparation and manuring and cultivation
given, the outcome would perhaps
have been very different and more encouraging.
Mr. Mott Barnes and bis mother, Mrs.
Minerva Barnes, of Anderson, came down
Saturday, on a visit to Mr. D. L. Barnes's
family.
Miss Llllle Huckabee, after a very enjoyable
stay of three weeks with the family of
Mr. C. M. Calhouu and otber friends at Greenwood,
returned to her bome here Saturday.
Mr. G. W. Speer, of the Abbeville Bar, came
up yesterday and was shaking bands with bis
many friends In tbla'place. He came specially
to see the family of his father, Dr. A. J.
Speer.
Miss Bertie Power, of Anderson, came down
yesterday, and Is still the guest of the writer.
Mr. T. T. Cunningham has Just had bis
dwelling which is a comparatively new one
nicely painted which Improves Its appearance
very much.
The cotton receipts at this "post" have to
date, been small, compared to those of last
year, same date. Tbe knowing ones seem to
think that tbe crop will In thit Township
hardly reach tbe half of an average one.
While tbe price of tbe staple is a renumeratlveoneand
ordinarily would put our people
"square with tbe world," yet it Will take
a considerable advance In price to put* them
In as good a condition financially as they
were last winter, owing to tbe loss of their
corn crops. It behooves them to sow all of
iha email frrnin nosRlhle. Thev will have an
unusually, good time to attend to t-bls lmportaut
matter as the Catherine ofthelr crops,
will soon be over, Horace Greely's advice
was, "go west young man, go west." It would
now doubtless be good advice, sow oats and
wbeat. young man, (and old too) sow oats
arid wheat. Troupe.
