STORES CLOSING AT 6 O'OlOCk.
,? ' jSMH
On yesterday nearly all of our stores oommenced
to olose at 6 o'olock, and all enjoy a
little recreation. How nice It would be if
every store would close, then no ontf would
have the advantage over the other aod no one
would lose anytulug by it, as; the trade
knowing the closing hour would soon AUI
Into the move and be none the worse off for
It. Clerks who have been worked bard ail
through the busy season, not only appreciate,
but need this out door recreation, aod after
enjoying It, will render better service to their
employers. Run through the winter, day
and night and frequently without- dinner,
then worked from It to 15 hours through -the
hoi dull months of summer Is too much for
any oue. The old ada?e Is a true one. "All!
work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." '

YOUR OWN TOWN.
Till* Is the Way tbe Editor of the
Greenville Ji?w? Describe# n Town
in AlaNka ? The Description
Doesn't Hit Anybody In Abbeville.
Greenville News.
We are not booming anything specially?
Just talking on general principles. Did you
ever think anything about your own town?
the town you live and do business In? Do
.vou have any pride In It or hope for It?
What Is your Idea about It. aoybow? Have
nr?n anv sentiment about It?
Do you care a snap of your finger whether
people outside of it speak of It as a live town,
a good town, a growingand flourishing town,
or whether they laugh derisively and Bay it Is
dead and played out and no place for live
people to live?
80 long as your own premises are in fairly
good repair, does it make any dlflerenoe to
you whether the rest of your town is a mass
of tumbllog, shabby, ramshackle desolation
and dilapidation?houses rusty and ooming to
pieces, fences leaning six ways for Sunday,
stores dusty and grimy and empty, streets
mud holes and ruts, sidewalks mere paths
through the weeds in summer and sticky,
slippery and treacherous in winter?
Have you any ambition for your town?
whoever and wherever you are?any sentiment
about it?
On the other hand, have you any ambition
or purpose for yourself or your children? If
von have, does It strike you that you can do
much for yourself or those who are to cornel
after you In a dead town? J>ld you ever
know any business, big or little, no matter
what It waS, that conld flourish In a dead
town ?
Supposing you to have the ordinary kindly
Instincts of humanity and that your selfishness?which
you have in common with all
bumanltj? Is enlightened, what is your Idea
about your own town? Do you caloulate on
letting somebody else do all tbe work and
spending and pushing while you sit still, a
drone In tbe hive, and simply look on? Do
yon figure on always reaping where you have
not sown, gathering Indefinitely where yon
have not labored? Don't you suppose otber
people will get tired of pulling you and a lot
of other dead weight and quit In disgust, or
go away to where they can find somebody
more congenial and where their eflorts will
umAncoo Want, thom to bo away, eh ?
Don't like to be stirred ap, eb f You look at
your town If It is prospering and see wbo has

We are talking to you Mr. Poor Man as well
as Mr. Rich Man and Man Half Way Between.,.
We mean you especially, Mr. Business
Man, -always growling about what
should be done- and what somebody else
ongbttodoand consistently refusing to give
a dollar/or anything unless you are directly
Interested, or to pul^a jpound?not even willing
to give an honr' of time you know yon

I The thing for you, Mr. Citizen of every class
and kind, If you want yoar own town to be a
Jive town. Is to mead youY ways, wake up
and get In the game. Lift your mind a little
from your own business or trade or whatever
it is. and cultivate what Is called public
spirit. Understand that if yon want to be a
man and a citizen you must do the part of a
nwm and a citizen.
Take an active, intelligent Interest In every,
thing that is proposed for the advantage of
yourown town. Oo to meetings and serve on
committees when you are wanted. Encourage
everybody who is trying to do something
for your own town. Give an hour or two of
