GIBRALTAR.
Gibraltar is a rock of immense size on tbe
Coast of Spain. England owns Gibraltar, and
la well fortltled with about one thousand gnus.
Qo tbe top is a signal statloh. It has a few
orange and olive trees, and tbe fig grows there
too. At the foot of the rock Is a town. Oo
tbe east aDd south and north aides you can
not climb u. Dut/On ine west u mopeo
and there Is a buy and a town. Semmes says,
this town Is a tine market for Jrult and flsb.
There Is a great many caves In It It Is sometimes
called tbe "Hill of Caves.'' There has
been made an .opening into tbe rook, and
every ten yards bas acannoo mounted. There
Is no growth on the top of this rock, and only
a lew small apes live tbere. These are very
strange little animals, and they have no tails.
They sometimes destroy tbe fruit, but nobody
barms them.
The.dlstance arouod this rock is seven miles,
and tbe height above tbe sea level Is one
thousand six hundred feet. The bones of men
and animals have been found in some of these
caves.
This fortress Is kept op by tbe toll paid by
vessels to enter the strait. When a Arm wants
to show Usability It speaks of itself as, "Strong
as the Kock of Gibraltar." <

country. HIh father, John Lamb, was a clerk
and kind or servant companion (or Mr. Salt
in the temple. Having thin position, beob-j

school) for Charles, the youngest ol bis three
children. Tbe boy stayed In this place from;
his eighth to his fifteenth year. While there
Samuel Taylor Coleridge was one of bis
frle&is. who, though two years old than
Lamb, had good iniluence over him.
After Charles came Irotn school be "spent a
great part or bis time in the library of Mr.
Salt. Then he got a ponltlon as clerk In tbe
South .Sea House, under his brother, Jobn.
When be had stayed there awhile, hegota
better place with the East India Company,
where during the next thirty-three years he
wrote what he called his true "works."
But soon something happened to mar Charles'
happiness. There had been a touch of Insanity
in the family, and when twenty-one
years old, he. himself, bad been confined to
the lunatic asylum for several weeks. Now,
his sister. Mary, who had been bo worried by
tbe care or her luvalid mother and poor old
rather, stabbed the mother, and wounded the
father, in a sudden tit of Insanity. She vwas
seat to tbe asylum for life, hut finding that
her fits came and went, Charles said that lie
would care for his sister. liefore this happened.
Lamb had met a young lady, iliss AliCQ
Wluterton, whom he liked very much, but
the sad thing prevented their union He
afterwards wrote a poem called "Dream Children,
A Reverie," in memory of the time
when liis early hopes were blighted.
In 1790 Larob, Coleridge anil Llovd wrote a
book of poems. Afterwards Lamb wrote a
religious poem, which was very much ridiculed.
Again the same thing happened, but this
did not check his love lor writing. I suppose
he bad tbe old saying, "If at first you don't
succeeded, try, try again," anr^'^ was tryiug
to live up to that plan.
Lamb's most famous wi jfls are the essays
of Klia. He and Marv^Ko wrote the
"Stories of the Plays of SaHpspeare." For
about live yeare Lamb wrotOTtfr the "London
Magazine." About the time he stopped that
he?aveuphls position with the East India
Company, recelviug a pension of lour hundred
and fifty pounds. f
After that lie moved to the country, where
he lived a very quiet life.) He missed tbe

From the action of the two roads It would
geam-that the Seaboard Air Line has made
perhaps 31.50 more than I he customer believes
to be the legitimate charges, while the Southern
made nothing at all in excess of its legitimate
charges. It may, therefore, seem to the,
reader that the Seaboard Ih a clear gainer.
But not so. Recently in ordering a machine,
and remembering the former treatment by'
the Seaboard, he ordered the last machine
over the Southern.
Of coarse the carrying business of a small
firm is nothing, but when an ill-mannered,
self-conceited official attempts to put his
