Hazing at the Citadel.
The cadets In ihe citadel have been hszlng
some of their fellow cadets and have used
two of them so roughly that they have gone
home.
Let It be remembered that these cadets are
the beneficiaries of the State's bounty.
Their conduct Is not only outrageous when
their fellow cadet Is considered, but their act
is a disgrace 10 me managemeuu ui iuo iunntution.
Here Is the way his treatment Is described:
But after entering the doorsoftbe Academy
hltt troubles Just began. Having been raised
In ibe country, be was not accustomed to city
ways and was naturally timid. Some of the
cadets, when they found tblsout, immediately
set about to tease and worry the youni; man.
But this was not alt. Had It stopped here,
young Way would be at the Academy now.
A lew nights ago he was set upon by a party
of students, and not being satisfied with cuffing
him about for a while, they finally got a
ohaln, tied it around the boy's neck and
hoisted him up, until his feet barely touched
tbe floor.
Charleston, as everybody knows, isatoney
place, bat as tbe State supports the Institution,
the country boys should be protected
within Its walls, or else tbe Institution shou Id
be closed,
Tbe State need not support an institution
to which country boys are excluded, or from
which it allows tbe smart Alecks to run them
off.
If the hazing of country boys cannot be
stopped, tbe legislature should withhold its
support. There is no use for the Institution
anyway.
If the beneficiaries of the State are to take
charge of the Institution and run oil boys from
the country, tbe people and tbe legislature 1
should resent tbe insult and show its appreciation
of the ingratitude of Its pets or beneficiaries.

A young man whose desire lobe sociable

Beau Broratuel of the menagerie, Is an exclusive

unseemly advances. Mr. Man bad not been
Introduced and was regarded as a decidedly
presumptuous Individual.
Ben rebuked blm by reaching out and gathering

back of the neck and delineated thereon a
railroad map. He stabbed holes In htm and
did various other pleasantries peculiar to a
tiger. When the man was rescued he remembered
that something ' bad happened. He
found himselt arrayed In a pair oi shoes,a
necktie and several strenks of gore, but not a
thing else. It took a surgeon to sew the remnaots
together. The boys about the menage '
rie kept the necktie as a souvenlrand bung it
up on Ben's cage. '
WOMEN THE BETTER EQUILIBRISTS.
?.
Jlrn Cannot Suppress Strength With (
Urate in Their Feats in (lie Cirrus.
The circus gymnast excites admiration by
the marvelous development of his muscles.
The equilibrist does not require the same effort
in hlR work. The beauty of the perform- <
ancelles In the delicacy, variety, lacllity and !
grace of the artist's movements, and on this
account, women excel as equilibrists, for men
cannot reconcile themselves to the suppression
of their strength In the feats they achieve,
aud therefore take a (second rank iu equilibrium.
t:Hpecinl adaptability to tlie nearest
possible perli'CtloD Is a point never overlooked
In engaging peiformers for the Great Wallace

THE BIG SH0W.1
The Oirpnt Wallace Nliows to Exhibit
In Abbeville, Tnowlay, November 2nd,
1897.
To see the performance oflered by the Great
Wallace Shows is to see the best artists In the
circus profession that money can secure or
long years of experience suggest. 1r the universal
verdict of those who have been enabled
to visit this popular place of amusement duriDe
the past dozen years. And this year, the
fourteenth successful season, the claim Is set
up that all previous rpcords are overshadowed
and a program of high-class novelties Is offered
that outclasses all competitors. Better
yet, this fact seems to be founded on absolute
facts,as the press notices in every city Included
In this year's tour thus far liave been
lavish In their praises. Indeed the universal
verdict has been "the best circus yet seen
here," and when the tremendous strides in
this branch of the amusement business during
recent years is considered, this Is exceptionally
strong language. "The proof of the
pudding Is In the eating thereot," is a trite
saying, and the people of this ci?y and vicinity
will have an opportnnlty to test the worth
of the Wallace Shows In the near future. The
date for exhibition In Abbeville, Is Tuesday,
November^nd, and the customary glittering
street parade will be given at 10:30 in the forenoon
of that day.
The Cov and Wheelman.
| Monroe county, N. Y., Is enjoying a novel
I lawsuit that will have special Interest for
i wheelmen. A young man was wheeling
! along a country road when he mot a cow so
1 suddenly that lie landed on the cow's back
I and to even up matters the cow mounted the
wheel. The cow was too much for the wheel,
' and It collapsed, and while the young man
j fell Into the ditch the cow Jumped ttie feDce
I and broke her neck. The owner of the cow
lias brought *ult against the young man for
damages to his cow.
The'wheelman may set up the claim that
the cow was guilty o( contributory negligence?first,
by getting on his wheel when she
didn't know how to ride, and, second, by unnecessarily
jumping the fense, but the farmer
I may be able to prove by expert medical testimony
that tlie shock of tlndlng herself Impaled
on a wheel rendered ttie cow Insane, In
! which frame of mind she jumped the fense.
! We believe the farmer should be fined hecause
his cow didn't ring a belt, and that the
I wheelman should be fined for not having a
i cow catcher on his wheel.
