GALA WEEK IN* ABBEVILLE.
The bicycle parade and races were largely
attended. Tbe afternoons were deligbtlully
cool and partially cloudy which contributed Tj
much to tbe comiort of all. Abbeville aud
her visiting Irleuds turned out in full force. frj
The afternoons afforded much pleasure and
enjoyment to all and nothing transpired to f,J
mar tbe pleasure of tbe occasion until the JA,
la>?t round of the 10 mile race, when an unexpected
accident, Mr. Stawright and Mr. <
Frank Hodges were thrown from their wheels '
by a small negro boy attempting to cross tbe p"
tract. The boy was knocked down by Mr.
Seawrlght's wheel, and Mr. Hodges following
close behind ran Into the wreck and was
also precepltated headlong over his wheel,
both sustalng painlul but not serious injuries
while this was golug on Mr. Collins,of Due
West, made the home run and won the prizes.
It was thought by many that Mr. Collins
would have won the race, at small odds, he
being just a few feet ahead at the time the accident
occurred, at the same time no one p(
could say positively. The other racing were
tine and "honors were easy" as we believe
racers from all points won prizes. Details of
which will be given this time by a more <
facile pen than ours. All the base ball games
needed to make them interesting was a team i
that could give the Abbeville boys just a fair .j(
field practice, this theTrojans could not do. ]

Talks of tlie Boys' Adventures.
J.W. Tumageand his son. Henry E. Turige,
were lodged In Abbeville Jail last Satrday
afternoon?the Junior on the oharge of
taking a criminal assault on a Negro girl,
lesenior on the charge of aiding a prlsonor
i escaping. Mr. A. M. Carpenter, acting
aputy for Magistrate T. J. Price, brought tte
risoners from McCormlck.
Young Tumage la alleged to have made a
lmlnal assault on a Negro girl near McCorilck
on July 10. He wbb arrested and bounl
irer to court by Magistrate Price. Constable
P. Sharpton started to Abbeville with the
3y, and was about a mile on the way when
Ik nrlsonflr (umoed out of the bue^v And ran
way. He was recaptured Friday and sent to
.11, this time accompanied by bid father.
Yesterday a Press and Banner reporter
tiled attbejall and asked the Turnages for
statement regarding the occurrences wltti
bich they were concerned.
J. W. Turnage Is 36 years of age and has Jor
Ine years lived near McCormlck. Henry E.
urnage Is 13 years of age. is of average size,
eighing S2 pounds. Both are fairly lntellijnt.
Tbe elder Turnage did tbe talking. His
ory Is, substantially, as follows:
"My boy and other white boys of the nelghDrhood
have been going In bathing near the
ome of Frank Bell, a Negro living on Mr. ,
IcGrath's place. Bell and bis family obicted
to tbe boys using the place. On July 9
:enry went to the wash-bole alone and
>und Frank Bell's daughter picking berries
ear by. He told her to go away; that he
anted togo in swimming. Tbe girl did not
ave and Henry commenced pulling off bis
lothes. Sbe commenced to iicream and
irow rocks. Henry put biR shirt on again
ad took part in the fight. The other Negroes
rime no and tbe row HtODned.
"The Negroes got out a warrant and Henry
as .given a; preliminary before Magistrate ;
rice. Dr. J. P. Koblnson examined the girl ,
at? found no marts of violence on bur per* ,
in. ,
"Yes, I told my boy to try to get away from ,
le constable. I warn you to publish that in ,
ie Press and Banner. I want chat undertood.
The reason was that I saw several
eg roes talking aud heard one of them say : 1
fhe place for us to do our work Is by the i
ayslde.' I took It that they intended to go I
p the road and lynch my boy. Mr. C. C. ]
orley and Mr. Price told me that the Negroes i
ad an idea ol lynching. That's why I told i
im to watch his chances and escape if possl- i
le, and why I helped him get out of the way.
"When Mr. Sharpton was a mile or so above
icCormlck I came up behind him, about 80
ards distant. He looked back at :tne and the ]
oy Jumped out and ran. He outrau Mr. '
harpton completely. Mr. Sharpton shot |
sveral times at the boy.
"I overtook n - boy and carried him over
ito Georgia. Last Friday we came back |
n this side and both of us were arrested. I (

Rumor Exciting: Bat False.
About 4 o'clock last Thursday afternoon an
axcitlng rnmor gained currency here. Tbe
long-dlBtance telephone brought from Greenville
a report that Henalor B. R. Tillman bad
been killed by an electric car In Washington,
rhe Press and Banner man ran up agafnst
the rumor and immediately proceeded to
bunt tbe source. Further than tbe long distance
'pbone story nothing could be learned
until morning.
It was soon found however, that tbe telegraph
and telephone wires all over tbe State
were loaded with the report and with anxious
Inquiries.
The story was considerably doubted by the
malorlty. but the well-known disposition to
believe any old thing about Tillman caused
many to conclude tbat the great Carolinian's
Sbenomenal career bad come to a tragic end,
efinlte assurance of a fake came' with Saturday's
papers, which announced that the;SenaLor
bad on the day before secured the passage
bis Dispensary bill through the Senate.
Senator Tillman Is now doing some work
which should secure for him the appreciation
jf the people of Abbeville.
It is probable that the Senator will be in
Abbeville the first week In August.
