Interest anything and everything thai teudx
to tbe upbuilding of our grand old county
uud State, and Is ever ready to lend a word
ol encouragement to those who are striving
to udIICl themselves, and either by word 01
example, to benefit the human race.
For several years the cry has come up from
our farming districts that "hard times" had
laid siege to the Industries of tbe laboring
classes and had well nigh won the victory.
We wondered then if It were true, and in our
own minds formed our doubts. Tbe theory
has been exploded, and three sonsot Abbeville's
soil have demonstrated that the proposition
Is an absurdity.
Several years ago. as some may remember,
the home of Mr. J. E. Eills of this couuty was
sold under execution, Hntl he and his family
were left without a dollar. Business embarrassments
bad overtaken him, and to the
world It seemed thai the hand of lortune was
against him. >
Time has proved differently. Since that
f time three of his sous, H. L., J. A. and M. L.
Ellis have become of age. Though possessed
of nothing Oi this world's goods, yet animated
by a desire to be something and do something,
they determined to buy back tbe old
homestead. This they did about three years
ago at a cost of something less thau two
thousand dollars, giving their note for the
amount, lu the three >ears since the pur
cba6e they have lent every eueigy towards
owning the bouse nf ibeir father, and it must
he gratifying to them to know that, while
they have enjoyed many of the conveniences
of life, yet they have more tbau half accomplished
their task.
We uo not mention this alone to commend
these young men for the stand they havtf,
taken in this regard, but to sho* In addition
the necessary reward that follows honest toil
e and manly efforts, and to strive to encourage
meters 01 our juung uiru iu uiuw u^? men
forces behind tbe same bulwark of safety?
honest and unceasing labor.
We take It that the above Ik a deraocRtratlon
that whether "sound money" or "free
silver," "hard times" or "prosperity," Is
abroad In the laud, It Is honest latior and
i good judgment that balnnces on the final accounting.
We honor those who are making
such efforts, and we letommeud to others
the emulation of their examples.

The venerable Mr. J. C. Harper, of Klberton
has been for t'oe past few days, visiting bis
son, Prot. J. F. Harper, and other kinsfolk1
and friends In this community. His presence
reminds us of the days of yore, (ante
bellum days) when he was a prominent
figure in our section. Then be was a large
and successful planter and a very popular
man. Just before tbe war he sold out his
possessions and moved to Elberton, where he
lived for several years, then broke up housekeeping
and>bas since been living with bis
children. Perhaps no man who ever made
his home amongst us is more gladly welcomed
In all of our homes than Is be.

The news was circulated early yesterday
raornlug that Mr. Calhoun Simonds was dead.
From the low state of health in which be has
been for some time, bis death was expected,
but he passed away suddenly. He was about
years of age, was quite a talented man,
aud at one time possessed considerable property.
Several months ago be came up from
Charleston where much of his life was passed
and has since made bis home with his brother-law,
Mr. T. T. Cunningham. His remains
will be deposited to-day In the cemetery at
Rockev River Presbyterian church.
Mr. Frank Morrow is, at this writing, very
low with dropsy.
The crops are about all gathered and many
of the renters and others of the same views,
will have a much longer time to rest than
usual. It Is a well known fact that there are

and gathered their crops. It 1* true that
many have much of the Winter mouths
taken up iu making arrangements for, and

renters are those who cbauge homes as seldom
as possible.
