DUTY IN SMALL THINGS.

A Heeled Thereby.
Dr. J. Lowrle Wilson preached last Sunday
night to a full house. He directed the atten
tinn of his hearers to the "Itnnorlunce of km.

some impressive remarks on "The Necessity
for;Con6ecration in the Service of the Lord.'
The Doctor urged that promotion In the
material affairs of lile would seldom conn
except as a reward for, or because of, dutlei
faithfully performed In the lower walks o
life. That on the common level, the degre<
ot fidelity to trust and the faithfulness to tlx
perforance of duty, marked the Individual ai

Uallaut .Soldier?No Disparagement to
The IIorseN and (be Colonel*.
Last week ibe Abbeville Medium gave an
interestlug record of John W. Calvert, a gallaDt
soldier of the Army of Northern Vlr
glnia.
General Hemphill, we believe, has the distinction
of being the only writer of war incidents
who has recognized the fact that others
than commissioned officers were in the Confederate
Army and did gallant service for the
Lost Cause.
We have heard of Captains, Colonels, Generals,
and horses, until we are heartily sick.
For this reason it is refreshing to see the
slightest evidence of a disposition on the part
of any one to renognlze the private soldier as
a factor in the war. The horses and the
Colonels have been eulogized so often that
one can hardly believe his own eyes, when a
recognition of^the soldier's valor is made.
We would not detract one iota from the
laurels on the brows of the brave Colonel
and the noble horses who took part In the
war. What we like to see is, that honoi
be given to the private soldier as well as to
the horses and Colonels.
General Hemphill throughout the war
acted well his part in all the thrilling scene
through which he was called to pass. He
recollects all that he saw, and has forgotten
nothiue.that be has read on a subject which is
nearest lo bis heart aud of which he has Just
cause to be proud. No man in South Carolina
Is more familiar with the history of the
war than General Hemphill.

The Australian Ballot. 9
Much has been said about the adoption of I
the Australian ballot, but as yet no law has j
been enacted on that subject. By common m
consent the people of Abbeville Connty have jS
adopted the system. In the last election the
| names of all the candidates were printed on fl
the tickets, and all the voter bad to do to V
vote a secret ticket was to go off to himself
and scratch out the names for which he did
not Intend to vote, put the ticket in his -J
pocket, walk to the polls, and deposit it in
the ballot box.
By this means the occupation of "workers"
for particular candidates was largely done '
away with. By this systen It Is Impossible |
for the ticket-writers to control elections. j
