Hot Water From the CoudeiiHer Met b

oil a * ery simple rrmcipie.
At sotno of tlie large power plants i
and near Xew York t lie eye of the visit<
or the passerby is attracted hv a new an
unusual feature?a circular steel town
looking like the tall stand ]>i]>o of soni
high level water system. It is. howevei
no tank. There is water in it, hut imlee
this is peifcactually leaking out?in fact
the percolation of the wator down war
from top to bottom is what gives the di
vice its unique value. It is tho coolin
tower of a self cooling condenser?one <
those numerous labor and power savin
Yankee inventions that have placed ti
where we now stand as a nation of invent
ors and engineers.
Every ono knows that there are tw
prhioipnl types of steam engines?the nor
oomlcnsing, in which the exhaust steal
escapes into the air. making the hoars<
putting sound so familiar in the locoim
tivoandtho steam tug, and tho conden?
ing. iu whicJi it is delivered into a con
denser, where it is cooled down and turn
ed back into water. In the former tvp
the piston lias to work against the pres
sure of the atmosphere?ahoufc 15 pound
to the square inch. lis tlie latter it lia
only to overcome the pressure of tho vapo
in tho condenser, which is much less, a
the condensation of the steam causes i
partial vacuum; hence the condensing en
glne is much the more economical of tin
two, saving fully 25 per cent of the stcan
?and hence of the fuel?required for th
other.
Why, then, are not condensing engine
universally emjuoyeur .-siuifiinii's ue
cause the uso of the condensing device i
not practicable, as on a locomotive. J^til
oftener beat uso it requires an unlimitei
supply of water. Cold water is tho mean
employed to condense the steam and as i
becomes warmer in the process it eanno
bo used over again; hence engines thatar
not situated near a largo water supply?oi
a river bank, for instance?cannot avai
themselves of the condensing principle am
profit by its fuel saving power. And evei
where a river is near, land on its bank i
bo often so much moro expensive that tli
manufacturer prefers to go farther awa;
where he can buy at a lower price, even i
he has to use a noncondensing engine.
But why not cool tho heated condense
water and use it again? This hns bee:
tried over and over, moro or less clumsil
una incueciivt-'iy, aim it i? vmui; ? nau ?
dono successfully in tho cooling towers a]
ready mentioned. Methods previously ii
use employ shallow ponds to cool th
water by surface evaporation, but these ar
out of the question in a largo city?or pan
on the roof, which are awkward and tak
up room. The cooling tower, which ha
satisfactorily solved tho problem and offer
to the manufacturer the welcome chance o
saving a large proportion of his fuel, ha
been in use for some time in a primitiv
and crude form in the southern state?
where the condenser water was allowed t
cool by trickling through a mass of brush
Later, in Germany, tho same result wa
effected by allowing it to blow over a nes
01 pipes. Ill til (J piTIUUtUU lunil UMJ M?
tower is packed with layer on layer o
vitrified tiles, set up on end. Throng
these, from the top to the bottom of th
tower, tho heated condenser water trie
kles, while u powerful air blast is blow;
upward through it from u rotary fan a
tlio base. When the water has reached th
bottom, it is cool enough to use again i
tho condenser. A little of it?from 2}
to 0 per cent?has evaporated in the proi
ess, but this loss is moro than mado u
by tho condensed exhaust steam that i
added as it does its work in the condense!
In passing through tho tower tlio watc
is cooled from about 120 degrees to at lea?
the temperature of the outsido air, chiefi
bv the evaporation induced l>y the air bias
that passes through tho tiling. The prii
ciplo is exactly the same as when one cool
his moist hand by blowing on it. Strange
ly enough, tho cooling is greater in sun
xner than in winter, for, though in winu
the air is colder, it is much nearer tli
point of saturation and will take up ver
little evaporation, and evaporation is tli
chief thing in tho cooling.
Direct escape of the heat by contat
with tho air blast and by radiation throug
tho steel sides of the tower helps, but it i
relatively unimportant. So, with the ai
of this device, the condensing engine, wit
its great economy, is today within tli
reach of every manufacturer in the lam
instead of perhaps half of them. Theopcr;
Uon of the tower is inexpensive, as tl
cost of working is only that of pumpin
tho water to the top ami operating tho fai
and this is slight compared with the sin
ing that results from using condensation,
The towers tako up little room. The
vary in size from 25 feet in height by
feet in diameter, which is suitable for a 4
horsepower engine, to one 30 feet in licigl
Viv 5fi font-, in diameter. for an en trine (
1,500 horsepower. One of the towers h:
for some time been in ukc at the Grand A1
enue Edison electric lighting station i
Brooklyn, in connection with a 50o liorsi
power engine.
It must not be imagined, however, thr
tho usefulness of a cooling tower stoj
with its employment as described abovi
As its namo implies, it may bo used air
where where water is to be deprived (
superfluous heat. For instanco, in tl
manufacture of ice, where water is froze
by the evaporation of liquefied amnioni;
The ammonia, which has been heated i
tho process of liquefaction by compressioi
is cooled by means of water, and with tl

'William C. Ussery, M. J)., of St.
Louis, says that the best food for those
suttering front typhoid fever is the
banauna. In this disease, he explains,
the lining membrane of the small intestines
becomes intensely inflamed
and engorged. Eventually it begins
sloughing away in spots, leaving well
defined ulcers. At these places the
intestinal walls become dangerously
thin. A solid food, if taken into the
stomach, is likely to produce perforation
of the intestine and tlire results
will follow. Therefore solid foods or
foods containing a large amount of
innutrilous substances, as compared
with nutritious substances, are dangerous
and are to be avoided. The bananna,
although it may be classed as a
solid food, containing as it does 05 per
cent nutrition, does not possess suflicient
waste to irritate these sore spots.
