fertilizer will be sufficient for an acre.
The plants when they first appear
above the ground look like coaise nut
grass. Two plowings, and the same
number of heoings, will generally be
sufficient to keep down any weeds and
grass, and in about two months the <
ground will be covered with the rank
green tops, which are excellent food
for cattle and horses. The crop matures
in about three months and hogs
turned in will fatten with surprising ,
rapidly. It is the plan of an old far- I
mer, instead of digi^inir and saving hi.-.
seed, to throw two furrows of earth (
on the bed before cold weather sets in. t

To Tell llio Afse ol Cut lie.
A heifer has no rings on her horns
until she is 2 years of age, and one is
added each year thereafter. You can.
therefore, tell the age of a cow with
tolerable accuracy hy counting the
rings on her horns and adding two to
the number. The bull has no rings,
as a rule, until he is "> years old. To
tell his age after that period, add live
to the number of ring*. The best tVay
to tell the age is by the teeth, which
is, of course, the only wav with polled
cattle. What are called the milk teeth '
gradually disappear in front. At the
end of years, tlie second pair 01 permanent
teeth are well grown, at J
four years the third pair, and at this
time the central pair are full size. At
7 years the dark line, caused by the
wearing of the teeth, appears on all of
them, and on the central pair a circular
mark. At- S years the circular mark
appears on all of them, and !? years the
ceutral pair begin to shrink, and the
third at 11. After this period the aye
can only be determined by the degree
of shrinkage generally. At 1"> years 1
the teeth are nearly all gone. ,

A simple, but excellent addition to
the home dinner, or Sunday night sup- ]
per, is hominy with cheese. The
hominy is first boiled to the consistency
of breakfast serving, then is
sgread in layers in a deep dish, with
grated cheese between each layer and
on top. It is theu put in the oven
long enough to melt and brown the
cheese. Ilice may be prepared in the
same way, though the hominy is better.
This is a dish that may'be often
substituted for potatoes, of which
vegetable even the most conservative
are willing to admit we eat too freely.

What the world most needs is,
not argument, but experience; not
logic, but salvation ; not ceremony, but
holiness. If the present tide of infidelity
is arrested and turned back, it will
be by a red-hot gospel proclaimed by
those wno know its power. It was not
Peter's lojjic that in a single day
eaptured three thousaed souls for
Christ from the rebel hosts of sin, but
the Spirit, the power, and the fire of
the Pentecost.
A exchange says a gentleman invited
some friends to dinner; and, as
the colored servant entered tlie room,
he accidentally dropped a platter which
held a turkey. "My friends," said the
gentleman, in a most impressive tone,
' never in my life have I witnessed an
event so fraught with disaster in the
various nations of the globe. In this
calamity we see the'down fall of Turkey,
the upsetting of Greece, the destruction
of China and the humiliation
of Africa.'*
We should find great peace if we
would imbue ourselves with this
thought?that we are here solely to
accomplish the will of God, that will is
accomplished from day to day, and
that he who dies leaving his work
unfinished is just as far advanced in
the eyes of Supreme Justice as he who
has leisure to accomplish it fully.

How A ICcautifiil Hymn Wn?* Wrilti-n.
One day Mr. Wesley was silling by
an open window, looking out over the
bright and heautifuls fields. Presently
a little l>ird, fitting about in the sunshine.
admitted his attention. Just
then a hawk rjune sweeping down
towards the little hird. The poor
thing, very much frightened, was darting
here and there, trying to find some
place of refuge. In the bright sunny
air, in the leafy trees of the green
fields, there was no hiding place from
the lierce grasp of the hawk. But
seeing an open window and a man
setting by it, the bird Hew, in its extremity,
towards it, and, with a beating
heart and quivering wing, found
refuge in Mr. Wesley's bosom. He
sheltered it from the threatening danger
and saved it from a cruel death.
Mr. Wesley was at that time sutler-j
ing from severe trials, and was feeling
the need of refuge in his own time of I
trouble, as much as did the trembling
little bird that nestled so safely in his i
bosom. ?So he took up his pen and!
wrote that sweet hymn :
"Jesus, lover of my soul.
Let me to tli.v bosom fly,
While lite waves of I rouble roll.
While the tempest still is high," ]
That prayer grew into one of the
most beautiful hymns in our language,1
and multitudes of people, when iu sorrow
and danger, have found csmt'ort
while they have said or sung the
last lines of that hymn.
The IJIessins of Work.
Work whets the appetite for pleasure
as well as for food. Work gives a zest
to enjoyment. Work bestowed, invests
every possession with increased
interest. We value the more that
which we produce with our own
hands. The fairest flowers are fairer
for having been grown by our own \
hands. Thus in a thousand ways, |
work in its turn becomes a pleasure,!
and the industrious experience joys J
that the idle can never know. Happiness
then, as weli as duty, urges us to
work. Necessity and self-love may
stimulate us to it, but God iu Nature
<ets us a never-failing example for disinterested
and unflagging industry.
None should be without his share in
the great brotherhood of labor, and
women should be permitted to participate
as fully and freely as men. The
do-nothings of either sex, however
may serve, like the drunken Helots
for the Spartan youth, "to point a
moral, and adorn a tale." J>ut to
treat them as superior citizens and to
dub them "ladies" aud "gentleman"
on account of their uselessness, is an
outrage to the industrious and a disparagement
of man's highest function.
A Sermon 111 Ki-hnm.
Here is a good story. A certain
minister when preaching on cleanliness,
mentioned how he had seen a
brass monkey in his town set up in a
store with a cigar in his mouth. The
cigar was lighted, and by machinery
the moukev could draw the smoke
from the cigar and pull' it out again.
The works stopped on one occasion,
and the monkey was taken apart to discover
the cause, when the works were
found to be clogged aU(] jn a filthy
condition. The moral was drawn by
the preacher thus : "If tobacco smoke
will stop the works of a brass monkey,
what will it do for you?" Let our
weed-indulging people rise and answer.
