Last Thursday afternoon quite a crowd of j S"E
colored people were seen standing in front, ol :
i.iie Court House, and upon investigation it !
was found that a runaway marriage had ] "j...
just, taken place. Trial -Iustiee Sanders, of Me- ,
Cormick, performing Hip ceremony. Sam , *
ttlmouds and MKs f.iia Smilh were tlie con- ^
pffj trading parties. j \
Connected with this marriage is a story, > fri
going to show that true love does not always
run smooth. Sam Simonds is a railroad dar- i
key. whose headquarters are at Monroe, anil j
holds the position of hrakeman on the (J., C. j
& N. Railway. He is reported to be sober,' t1
thrifty and prosperous, and it is said that he I ^
has saved several hundred dollars ahead. 11,111
Seeing Miss Lila Smith, a very pretty young I X
colored girl of Abbeville, lie thought his hap-' <le|
piness would be complete if she were his wife, i daj
He made known the emotions and desires -p
which tilled his heart, and his sweetheart was I |>a,
not averse to his suit.. They had frequent '
talks aud each had made pledges. The mar-j -
riage was proposed, out me jovt-i uuu m.^ .j
k sweetheart knew that an irate mother would I ma
L never consent. j j]
|L^. The girl" hail no money to prepare the wed-'
dine apparel, but.Sam was full handed, anil <
no he furnished the money, ami the girl had |
t u nice wedding outfit? made by the most ex-:
pert of the mantau akers. An elopement ;
'J . was arranged and the grooms friends Mark; K
Smith and Laney ltichardson were chosen to i 1.1
assist him in getting his bride. They took
her, and she took a great quanty of n'ee1
clothes, to Monroe a few days ago where the
marriage was to take place on Sam's arrival, j i,
But North Carolina has some curious laws on ;
the subject of marriage, and which laws seem :
to have been passed lor the especial annoy, j 11
ance and disappointment of couples in this I <-?ai
and similar conditions. A marriage liceuse it
had to be secured before they could be united | pal
as husband and wife, and prior to the issuing | na
of a marriage license in that State there were _
perplexing condltons which delayed the h:ip-1
py event. During the delay the irate mother j mm
swore out a warrant for Mark Smith and j 1*2
Larney Kicliardsen, charging them with kid- j
napping her daughter, and the police of Mon-1 H
roe took the daughter in charge. All were! Sj
brought back to Abbeville. The lover pro-, H
tested his abiding love for his sweetheart, and J Hj
she in turn said that she would marry him.
The mother seeing that it was useless to i
prosecute the case further, consented to the j ?..<
marriage, and the men who weie charged 0|,j
with kidnapping were released from the [.u
clutches of the law. Trial Justice Sanders <ou
made the lovers one, and they took their de- (.H)
parture lor Monroe, where they will make yo'
their future home. |Spc

Dear Sir?We are arranging to organize a l\.

newspapers of the State on file.
|- We would appreciate it very much If you i TN
would send us your paper for this reading ; |/

the State, and you would be helping the cause _A

our request. Very truly,

While it may be that there are publishers ..
who would send their papers to almost any Mil

the Press and Banner he must pry it, just
j like auy other citizen.
! We are surprised that a great state institu[ .
lion should seek to have its reading room
placed under the "dead head," "dead beat," I
column, though we are gratified to see that
K the Institution is anxious about the intelligence
of its students. , r
If Presideut Johnson wants the Press and \\'a

lege over which be presides he must pay two j j
dollars a year for It. We are in the business 1 cor
to send the Press and Manner to people who : tjr(
f are willing to pay lor it. Whole families, j
L could be found in Abbeville county who
j would be very much obliged to us if we would , ?
J .A put them on the "Dead Head" list. j ^
