In the Popular Science Monthly, for
September, H. Benjatield, an Austral- |
ian medical man, writing on fruit as
food and medicine, declares that the
Creator is so anxious that this very j
necessary food shall he eaten by his
creatures tbat he makes it beautiful to ]
look upon, sweet and attractive in 1
smell, and gives to it such varieties of
flavor that the most fastidious can be
satisfied. And yet, in spite of all this,
the great mass ot the people look upon
fruit as a luxury upon which they can
only spend .idd pennies for tbe amusement
of their children. And as for the ,
amount of drugs swallowed which
should be replaced in great measure by
fruit it is beyond any power to calculate.
Millions upon millions of money
* are spent annually upon mercurial and
otter purgatives, most of which would
be quite unnecessary if the people

article of diet.
Lemon juice has been recommended
as a'specific for rheumatism. Garrod,
the great London authority on gout,
advises his patients to take oranges,
lemons, strawberries, grapes, apples,
pears, etc. Tardieu, the great French
authority, maintains that the salts of
potash found so plentiful in fruits are
the chief agents in purifyiug the blood
from those rheumatic and gouty
poisons. Perhaps in our unnatural,
civilized society, sluggish action of t he J
bowels aud liver is responsible for)
more actual misery than any other ailment.
Headache, indigestion, constipation,
hemmorhoids and a general-!
]y miserable condition are but too of-}
ten the experience of the sufferer, aud
to overcome it about half the drugs in ?
the world a;e given in all sorts of com- !
pounds. j
The writer mentioned says : "But
the blood is the life, poor blond means: J
poor spirits, poor strength, poor breath, J J
and poor circulation, impure uioou i
meaus gout, rheumatism, skin diseases I
rickets aud other troubles. As it is
proved that fruit will purify and im- ,
J>rove the quality of the blood, it must
ollow that fruit is both food and J
medicine combined. In fevers I usej
grapes and strawberries, giviug themj
to my patients iu small, but frequent;
doses?oranges and baked apples, if the (
other are not obtainable. For rheuma- j
tism, plenty of lemons are invaluable. ,
White girls with miserable, pallid complexions
want a quart of strawberries;
a day; where these are no obtainable,
bananas, which contain much iron, are
a good substitute. Probably, of oil
fruits, the apple stauds unrivaled fori
general puaposes iu the household ;
either raw or cooked, it can be taken \
by nearly everybody, and it contains i
similar properties to the other morede-,
licate fruits. To my mind, the pear Is j
more easily digested than the apple,
and for eating uncooked it is superior
to it."
A favorite argument with the vege-1
tarian9 is tbat the strongest, the most j
powerful and serviceable animals are j
those which subsist wholly on vegetable
food. The ox, the horse and the i
elephant are examples. They are not
only the most powerful and the most
useful as beasts of burden, but a mo9t
important quality is their tractability
and amiability. If these animals were
savage and ferocious as the carnivore,
the meat-eaters, they would be wholly .
unlit for the extreme usefulness of 1
their multifarious and invaluable services.
When it comes to'the human
races in a wild state, it will be found
that the exclusive meat-eaters are always
savage and ferocious, while those
' who subsist chiefly on fruits and vegetables
are of a gentler disposition."
Since the body of man is made out of
the foods he eaU, it is plain that diet
must have a very great deal to do with
liis health, his physical strengtn, nis'
mental and moral qualities. There-!
fore, without being converted to any!
special school of dietics, it must be ad-;
mitted that fruit is a most valuable ai-j
tide of food, and its use is to beencour-j
aged under all proper conditions.?New j

The dispensary law has been attack
|eci from every side it is possible for th?
i ingenuity of lawyers to discover. Foi
j more than two years it has withstood
j these attacks in all the courts of th<
; land, and the prediction has beet
frequently made by its opponents that
the bottom would be knocked out o
the dispensary. Back and forth th<
lawyers have rung the changes upoc
its unconstitutionality, and the news
' papers have set the day for its flna
i doom, but the law has persisted ir
enforcing itself, and it never was ir
better trim for a long life than at tlx
! present time. Judges and lawyers
have tackled almost every provision o:
the law, and except the restraining
nrHpr of .Tudue Simon ton as to the im
portation of liquor for personal use un
! der the limitation of five gallons, noi
' a hole has been made in the dispensary
system.
The latest effort to set aside the law
has been under a test this week, anc
while the proceedings are not final 01
conclusive, the indications are thai
this vaunted method will fail tr
accomplish its object. A citizen oi
' another State brings an action to recovI
or damages under the anti-monopoly
j law of Congress, because the dispellj
sary authorities had seized and conlisJ
cated a large quantity of liquor be
longing to him. The whole question
hinges upon the construction of the
anti-monopoly law as to whether the
State is ''a person, corporation or association."
The showing made before
Judge Simonton on behalf of the
complainant was much weaker thar
anticipated, and to a layman it is
evident that there is even less in thit
contention than some of its predeces
sore. No one knows or has a right tc
intfmate what will be the decisiou o
Judge Simonton, but it is plain that;
judgment against the dispensary law
in this case would have to rest on oth
er grounds than those relied upon it
the argument. The State has mad<
out a strong defence, and we do no
expect to see any change take place it
the administration of the dispensary
. law when the decision is rendered
