Again Abbeville has been visited by lln and again a kind Providence has assisted 1 the work of conquering the flames. Had i ' not been for the direction that the wind tool j soon after the tire started, our fair city wouli 1 be (or at least a larjfe portion of it) In ashe I to-day. j When the cry of "Fire!"' rang out on th I night our people turued out in full force a I usual, aud as usual were ready and willing ti : work, or It seemed so to your correspondent j While it Is true that many seemed very in ' different and did nothing to help in the de* I hu11\t* n-iih the flumps. We think th (cause of tbis action was the apparent hopt lessness of the task. It was the indifferenc of despair. With nothing to fight the devout [ ing flames, no apparatus of any kind, no | eveu a bucket or ladder to lie found, the worl was up-hill troin the very first, and as wi have said, the case looked hopeless. Witl everything apparently against them, work and hard work, prevented the spread of tin flames; and just as the first faini signs o the corning Sabbath appeared in the east our tired people went home, thanking Got that the calamity that had visited us was n< worse. Another losson has been given us, and maj we profit thereby ; a lesson of the kind tha up to this time has not been heeded. For oui little city's sake, wake up, good people, anc provide some ineaus of flgriting fire. Some tiling must he done, and done at once. "W< have no water works," will be one of the ex cusesfornot doing something in this direc tion. That Is sad, but true, we can have c hook and ladder company without watei works, and we believe, with a hook and lad der company the fire Sunday could have beer checked long before it was. Wake up, and i?o something, and don't lei all youreflorts be expended in talk. Talk 1? all right in Its place, but it won't put out 8 lire. Huy a ladder or two, and a few buckeU (If uothlng more) and keep them where they can be found when needed. Do something l)oauylhin<r that will give us the protection we need. We have learned to-day that the -i. nnnnlntotl a cnilimittee tC coufer with the citizens of the town In regard to at once putting iu some apparatus for protection against tire; anil also that an ordf nance had been passed making the limit in which no lramc building could be erected, 500 feet from any point on tbe public square, Good lor the city fathers, and let us hope the work will notstop here. 1'UEACIIER RETURNED. On his recent visit, to Abbeville Genera Stephen D, Lee paid a handsome complimeni to the bravery and soldierly bearing of Mr Lewis Truwitt, who was color bearer o his regiment. Gen. Le< thinking he could better bring about the de sired result, asked Mr, Truwitt to let hirr have the flag, when he (Gen. Lee) would lead the men bel ter into battle. Color-benrer Lewli Truwitt replied that "this flag had been en trusted to his keepiug. and that he would fact the enemy with It in his own hands, or die it the effort." And so it was that he refused tc let General Lee have it. In asking for it however. General Lee disclaimed any reflec Hon on the color-bearer.
