GEORGE B. M'CASLAN. * Tribute From ik FrlMicl-Xole* of . M. Kennedy. I see by tliis week's issue of your paper short notice of the death of ray Iried and con rade George B. McCaslun. You state "he die at. the home of his brother-in-law. Mr. A. 1 Kennedy, who was a gallant soldier in tl l'Jth Regiment and fought the battles of h country with valor and heroism." The compliment paid Mr. Kennedy was <1 served. My deceased friend, too, was a ga lant soldier. The record shows that he wi among the first to answer to the call of h country. He enlisted at the age of twent; one Id Bradley's Company C. 7th Regimen and was mustered into service by Major E' ans on May 14th, 18B1, and was wounded o Maryland Heights, 13th September, lSttJ. Tt capture of these Heights made Harper's Fe ry an easy prey to General Jackson with i eleven thousand prisoners and seventy-tw cannon two days later. Speaking of this capture recalls two inc dents which made a lasting impression upo me, which may be mentioned here. One wa on that day Gen. Butler lost his deep-seate brass bound saddle and the circumstanc* connected therewith. The other was a coi vernation had with J. M. Kennedy, the day < the surrender. Jim was also a member < Bradley's company, and was a younger brotl er of A. B. Kennedy, and Is recorded as bein mustered into service by Maj. Evans on tb l Jin oi April. looi, at Aooeviue court, tioust at the age of seventeen. Jim was the bab; boy of the company. The surrender of Harper's Kerry took plac early Sabbath morning, 15th of September 1862, after which, for a few hours the Con fed erate soldiers, tired and hungry, seemed U roam at will. Jim Kennedy asked metogi with him and'he would show me a Yankee h< had wounded in the tight, I went with bin to the hospital, where he stood over a wound ed Federal soldier and said ; "There lies a man I shot." The wounded man looked up at him and re plied: "Yes. you 6hot me, but it was alter surrendered.-' With an earnestness and sternness far be yond hisage, Jiru .said, *'1 didn't go into thi war to take prisoners." Although it occurred nearly thirty-threi years ago, this incident is as indelibly im nressed ou my memory as ttie battle and cap tureof Harper's Ferry Itself. Two days later, twelve miles up the river the great battle of Sharpsburg was lought and J. M. Kennedy was killed. J believe the cause lor which he fought an< died was as dear to him as lite itself, aud tha he laid himself a willing sacritice upon thi alter ot his country. .1. A. 1). Tlie Jubilee. The Business Men's Jubilee and Trade Car nival is now well under way. Rehearsals an being had aud everything promises for a com plete success. The style of entertainment is novel aijf unique. It has been tried in many placei and without exception has always provei eminently satisfactory not only as a good me dium of advertisement but as furnishing ? thoroughly enjoyable performance. The ladies in charge are hard at work will energy and enthusiasm, and the host of fall (Inmuttk tvhn in ?iftir<* nru ?a ulrwr flic praises of their respective establishments, an vieing with each other in the attractiveness of their costumes and in their picturesqut grouping and display. The play is copyrighted and we know little of the detail, it being kepi si secret ; but the public is assured thai the whole affair will be up to the standard of reputation which this unique entertainment has attained elsewhere. The time is fixed for Thursday night, the _'5th, and it is hoped that the tireless work ol the brigade ol young ladies will bring out the larger and enthusiastic audience which they deserve. The advertisers :iro again reminded that they are expected to furnish their own banners, aud as before stated, it is hoped they will be attractive and artistic in design. This being achurcli entertainment, the foreman of the grand jury and the county oflieials have kindly consented that the Court House be used. Tickets now on sale at the drug stores and at Aug. W. Smith's. Admission .T> cents. Children 25 cents. No reserve seats. i.et all coine out and have an evening ol fun and frolie. Old Papers.
