Murder at WllllaiiiMtoii.
Head the story of the murder at. Wllilamston.
The account of the lynching lain the ?tereotyped
form, and which, of course, will deceive
nobody. In the first place, Williamson
Is a small village of say, two or three hnndred
Inhabitants?men, women and children?not
counting the Female School. "About five
hundred determined men," It is stated were
responsible for the lynching. Where did so
men come from? "Mayor G. W. Sullivan
and the other citizens of Wllllamston" faithfully
tried to protect the prisoner. The officers
started off In a buggy for Anderson, aDd
the mob, who started an hour later, overtook
the prisoner about five miles "in the direction"
of Anderson.
The officers must have waited for the
mob? It la only eighteen miles to Anderson,
and if the Officers had one hour's start of the
mob. the "two officers" ought to have been at
least Ave miles on the road, before the mob
started.
Suppose that the "two officers" were travel*
log at rate of five or six miles an hour, how
fast would the mob have to travel to overtake
them "about five miles'" from Wllllamston,
after giving the officers one hour's start?

, Neit Tuesday 1b Christmas day. The Press
and Banner sends greeting to every reader
and trusts thai in each home and around every
fireside there Is happiness and reason for
gratitude to the Giver of every good aQd perfect
gift. Santa Claus ought to take something
to every chilu. It is hoped that none
may be forgotten. Let the young be happy
and Joyous while they may. It will be only
a little while until they will assume grave
and Important duties, when the zest of pleasure
will be lessened. Let no one celebrate tbe
day by any unseemly conduct. Celebrate the
nativity of the Prince of peace as becomes
good and true men. Don't drink any liquor
on Christmas. It is a desecration of tbe sa"
cred anniversary. Keep sober and happy.

Last Sunday at dooq wbea the north bound
passenger train over tbe G., C. & N. railway 1
ktopped at tbe depot, a carious crowd ol peo-!
pie filed through the passenger coach to ;
catch a glimpse of Ex-Governor Tillman, i
wbo. It was reported, was aboard tbe train.
The ex-Governor and Senator-elect was lying |
flat on bia back on one of tbe benches, mid
way of tbe car, test asleep. His legs were ;
crossed and bis feet were In tbe windows, j
His bead rested on a bundle, both bands
clutching the arm of tbe seat against whlcb
. bis bead was resting, thus giving passers-by '
an unobstructed view of tbe face of the <
distinguished 8outh Carolinian. Neither tbe '
stopping nor the starting of tbe train at Abbevllle
disturbed his peaceful slumbers. He
slelp straight through tbe stop and start at
('ana. When Sal-ak was reached be changed
position slightly, and palled down his feet,
when the train was nearing Greenwood tbe
negro porter stood over blm and cried out,
W "Greenwood, next Station." Tbe Governor
raised up, changed ends, and asked the porter
to reverse tbe seat in front of him, on which
be then put bis leet; folding bis arms in
front, be sat erect, and was wideawake when
Greenwood was reached.
Whether tbe Senator Intentionally put his
feet up at Abbeville, and put Hie head np ail
Greenwood to show bis comparative respect
for tbe two towns Is not stated. Certain It is !
that with bis bead op at Greenwood be did j
not draw the crowd which be drew at Abbe- i
vllle with bis ieet up.

fixed by tbe bidder. He put no price on any
of them, and "would lake your price." The
horses were warranted to be as represented.
The prices rauged from S59 to 891. A great

THE LEGISLATURE.
Brief NoteN or tbe Work of the
rnl Assembly?Thin Seems to be a J
Good Body.
I Tbe Legislature is now on the home stretch
| in the race with work before It. and by yatori
day evening, tbe General Assembly will ad'Journ
and the Individual members will be on
tbe borne-run.
I Many efforts have been made to tinker
witb tbe dispensary law. Tbe liquor men, or
bar room advocates, bave introduced bills,
and the extreme friends of the dispensary
have attempted more stringent measures, but.
it is not likely that any radical legislation
will be done. The extreme measures have
j been killed. The Legislature seems to be
| keeping in tbe middle of the road.
Tbe Legislature has refused so far to do any
i hurt to the railroads, although the "Jim
Crow" car is still in sight. It will likely be
laid away for resurrection next session, when
the members wno bave sufficient talent to Introduce
dog laws, divorce laws, cotton seed
I laws, will unite to get in some bills to be kill
I common honesty towards their customers.
Ex-Governor Tillman was elected United
State* Senator last Tuesday, to succeed Sena
tor M. C. Butler after the fourth of next
March. The vote stood: For Tillman, 131;
for Butler. 21. Scattering,#. Butler thinks
Tillman will never be United States Senator,
but Tillman 1s Imbued with the Idea that he
will get the place.
The appropriations to the Citadel and to t he
South Carolina College will likely be cut down
verv materially.
There is an effort to reduce the salaries of
the State officers.
The time for introducing bills has passed
and It Is thought the members of "dog law"
capaolty will not be heard from again.

Money scarce and business dull here as elsewhere.

Dr. Lathan preached here yesterday.
Farmers seem almost ludifient about making
contracts for next year, and the laborers
are becoming very uneasy about homes, something
never known here before. The outcome
of this condition of things should be bet.teer
service on more reasonable terms to the em
ployers. At preseut'the average farm laborer
works about four months out of the twelve
In the year, and gets a living for self and family,
which Is more than it is worth. Employers
have been unable to lay up anything 10
tide over the present bard times and all are
going to suffer now in consequence. There Is
plenty of work badly needed on the farm but
no money to pay for it.

j who aspire to nothing higher than dog laws,
j divorce laws, cotton seed laws. Such men
ought to have their measure taken, and make
tbe canvass in tbe primary as "dog law members,""divorce"
members, and "cotton seed"
members. Nearly every county can elect a
"dog law" member.
Tbe divorce bill has been killed. That was
right. There is always some "dog law" member
who would degrade woman, but luckily
there are not enough such members to do any

If a man wants to build five miles of track,
he must give three months notice, before applying

three months public notice of bis intention,
