My Savior.
Under an Eastern sky,
Amid a rabble cry.
* A man went t'ortli to die
Fur me!
Thorn crowned His blessed head,
Blood-stained His weary tread,
Uross-laden, on lie s;>ed
For ine!
Pierced were His hands and feet;
Three hours o'er Hiui heat
Fierce rays ol noontide heat
Kur me!
Tlius wert Thou made nil mine,
I,oril, make me wholly Tliine;
Grant grace ami strength divine
To ine!
In thought and word and dewl
Thy will to do, O lead my soul,
K'en though It bleed,
To Thee!
TRIP NORTHWARD.
Description
or Some of (he Beautiful
Places Id Some of tlie Historic
tiuett.
New Yorx, Sept. 1,1S9-J.
Much has been written by "sightseers" ol
what they have seen in this and other cities
of the North, but as most.people are Impressed
differently, possibly we may be able to Interest
your readers with a short account ol
what has impressed us most.
We were detained in Greenville for a fewhours,
which was pleasantly spent with
Irlends and looking round. Onr first stopover
was In Washington. Refreshing ourselves
after a long and (lusty ride, we set out
to locate our trleods; Mr. J. A. Johnson and
family. Mr. Johnson was exceedingly kind
in directing us to places of Interest, and also
in joining us when business would permit.
Of course the capitol was the centre of attraction,
with Congress in session. We went early
arid alter going over this magnificent structure
wecalled In to rest and hear the discussion
on the absorbing question of the day?
the great silver debate, which will easily rank
with the famous debates that have heretofore
taken place in these tails. When we entered
the lower house Mr. Burrows, of Mlchigm,
one of the Republican leaders, was speaking.
We also heard A Men. of Mississippi, the wit
of the House. The audience was kept in
roars of laughter. The ch lr then announced
the "Gentleman from New York, Mr. Cockran."
Burke Cockran is regarded as the ad.
ministration leader on this question. He is
decidedly the flnesi orator in either house.
By his eloquence, reasoning, pathos repartee
and action be held the close attention of the
House for nearly two hours. Most of the Senate
and a good part of the cabinet had scats
on ice uuur ui lucnuusc.crucwiij vmimn
occupying a prominent positiou. The galleries
and doorways were jammed with spectators.
It was evident bis speech had influence.
On Friday we looked in on the Senate and
heard Hill, of New York, on the twine ques
tion. Mr. Hill presents a tine personal appearance,
and is a better speaker than we had
supposed. He received good attention. We
^ere surprised on reacbit g New York to bear
men say Hill had lost bis "grip" on his party
and that Tammany Hall had forsaken him.
We have found the greatest iuterest manifested
in this sliver question in Washington,
Philadelphia and New York.
We visited other government buildings, all
of which are grand and of gigantic proportion.
The public grounds are at this sea.-on
beautiful. The grass is as green and fre.'h as
in early spring. Tuls grass dotted wl'b beds
of brilliant colored flowers, that are arranged
with the greatest taste, makes Washington
very like a fairy garden. The asphalt streets
everywhere prevents dust and are kept so
very neat by sweepers constautly at work.
Friday afternoon In company with a lriend
we took a carriage drive visiting some of the
historic spots, one of which was tbe home of
David Burns, the former owner of the land on
which Washington is located. George Washington
made tbe trade after considerable effort
and old man Burns still fell dissatisfied
In some way and bad a dislike for Washington.
The little old bouse still stands In a decaying
condition. Just beside It stands the
family mansion, built in the flrct days oi
Washington, as the capltol of this great Republic.
Tbese two old bouses are letl as landmarksand
have quite a romantic story con
nectcd witn mem.
The Soldiers Home was the next place of
interest. These grounds are grand aud beautiful,
well kept and standing oh un elevated
spot Is the Home, a large sione and marble
building, in keeping with all property thai
the United States has in charge. Here all
who have been in any way dl:>abled in the
United States military service tind a home
and a beautiful one it Is.
We took a hurried round through the National
Museums. Days could be spent here
pleasantly and profitably. George Washing
ton, bis clothlug, furniture, Ac., are made
very prominent. There are many curiosities
of i every nation gathered together In this
beautlfnl place.
We took a bird's eye view of the wh ile city
from the wonderful Washington monument.
For miles around one can locate places of Interest.
prominent amoug them Is Arlington
Heights, Gen. R. E. Lee'* old home. The
mansion still stands and Is kept in good condition.
Numbers of our Confederate dead lie
buried there. The grounds of the White
House from the monument is a picture once
seen will not be forgotten. The bubbling
fountains in the midst of tiny lakes here and
there, covered by "pretty pond lilies." the
whole surrounded by well kept shrubbery
and beds of bright blooming flowers, wakes a
tit tint surrounding for tbe home of tbe 'first
lady of the land." Tbe exterior of the White
House was not up to our expectation. We
were kindly shown through the hou?e by an
officer. Tbe blue room Impressed us most as
a "place of beauty." They were putting the
house In order, making ready for the return
of tbe family from their summer home at
Gray Gables. Washington is certainly a well
kept city.
We left for Philadelphia at 3.1o Saturday afternoon.
As we sped on our way at rapid
rate we noted the difference, the wide difference.
from our own Southland. There were
herds of cattle everywhere, horses and cults
In abundance; corn, fruit trees and vegetables
are the crops now on the ground. Every
6pace is covered with grass, and tbis gives
such a cheery look as well as belog profitable
Jn stock raising. Wetbink moreof this grass
culture with us would add greatly to our already
favored county.
Monday morning we felt fresh and muly to
do up some points of Interest in the Quaker
City. First was the miut. We saw the whole
process of making gold and silver money. It
seems that limes ought not to be hard when
the money Is turned out here by the bushel.
The officer, who was so kind as to show us
thmnihjnd exDlain everv ooint. sla.t< d thai
In tbe gold room tbey had stored away twenty
million dollars, and we saw It turned out
of tbe stamplug machine a peck at a time.
Our next point was the Penn Institute for the
deaf and dumb. This is located out at lit.
Airy, some eight or ten miles from the City
Hall. This is a beautiful place and so well
adapted to the purpose for which it Is used.
We met the principal and hud n very pleasant
stay of two hours in these grounds and
buildings. It Is wonderful how they teach
children, who are perfectly deaf, to speak.
There will be several pupils from North and
8ontb Carolina In tbls school next year.
We spent some time In looking over Wanamaker's
"big store." A marvel to people of
small means. With an ariny of salaried men
and women, he, last year, cleared a million
dollars, so we were informed by good authority.
We took lunch lu thedlning department.
We have never seen a hotel to surpass it lu
the number of customers. Almost anything
can be bought there. Every thing goes on like
machinery.
The afternoon was snent in the park and
looking over the zoological garden and many
other places of minor Importance. We closed
tbe day with a stroll through tbe grounds of
Glrard College. Here the exquisite arrangement
of the flower beds surpassed any thing
we had seen before. While here 9 chime ol
silver-toned bells marked the- hour of six.
We were greatly impressed with the vast
amount of money invested In the grounds
aud the twenty odd handsome buildings In
the campus. About 1U00 students are in attendance.
