Perfect Through Snffering.
God never would send you tbe darkness,
If he felt you could bear tbe light;
But you would not cling to guiding hands
If tbe way were always bright;
And you would not care to walk by faith
Could you always walk by Bight.
'Tie true he has many an anguish
For our sorrowful hearts to bear,
And many a cruel thorn-crown
For your tired head to wear,
He knows how few would reach heaven at all,
If pain did not guide them there.
So He sends you the blinding darkness
And the furnace of seven-fold heat;
'Tis the only way, believe me.
To keep you close to His feet.
For 'tis always so easy to wander
When our lives are glad and sweet.
Then nestle your hand in your Father's
And sing, if you can, as you go;
Your song may cheer one behind you
Whose courage is sinking low;

A Substitute for Weather In Conversation.
A substitute for weather in conversation
has been suggested, and had it
been adopted in time, we should not
have found ourselves in our present lamentable
situation. It it proposed
that arithmetical observations be submitted
for those of a meterological
nature. For Instance, people of ordinary
culture might thus converse:
"Good morning, miss. Nine and
eight make seventeen."
"Yessir, they do; and three from
seventeen leave fourteen."
"And one more will make fifteen."
"Yes, sir; but seven into fifty-three
is very different."
Or, if the the parties have attained a
higher grade in mathematical knowl'
' 1 ? i;i-Q
edge we migat nave suiuciuiug unc
this:
"How do you do, madam ? Six and
seven-eights added to four and a quarter
make eleveu and one eighth."
"Yes. indeed, Mr. Jones; and three
and a ninth will not go evenly into
fifteen."
"Certainly not; and eleven-twelfths
of six will come within two and a half
of being eight."
Now, would not such conversations
be improvements in every way upou
the succession of weather platitudes
which have so long been in vogue?
