we copy irom ine state me miiesi. ?uu uuwi jpr
complete account that has been published of pu
the manner in which Miss Sadie M. Means of ic
this ooumy was recently treated by the Sec- mi
ond Presbyterian church of Columbia. rei
Without exception every man who has Ti
spoken of this matter in our presence has ex- m
pressed his Indignation at the manner in wi
which the proceedings have been taken m;
against her. m
The form of the question upon which Miss
Means's confession is alleged to have been 5tl
made is a method which we think would not dc
have been resorted to by any court of Justice m
which was governed by a proper sense of cl;
right and wrong. ? at
Th? question was this:
"Do you still habitually violate the Sah. m
bath by working In the telephone exchange ?" lz
Instead of properly notifying Miss Means of ai
the gravity of the penalty which they pro* Ij
' posed to Inflict, and Instead of putting her on le
her guard, and Impressing her with the neces. tL
Ity of having some one to look after her ic- tt
InrmtA on<i baa that aha aruc nnt iinlimtlv onrt
Illegally dealt with, the pious and Christian cl
preachers make a doable question,to the latter ol
part or which they knew she was obliged .to H
answer in the affirmative, and It was certainly pi
to that part of the question which she did an- It
swer, and yet that conscientious Christian m
court tukes the advantage of her inexpert'
ence, puts a wrong construct Ion upon her
words, and Interprets the answer to suit their
own purposes, namely: that she had ac- w
knowledge*! that she habitually violated the D
Sabbath. j
The troth is, tbat she meant to say 0<
no sooh thing. She plainly meant to say tr
that abe still worked in the telephone exchange,
and we take it for granted tbat there al
was not a man on that coui t who bad not sul c<
-> flcient Intelligence to know that they had put ^
the wrong construction on her answer. The j|
presqmption is against the fair intentions ol pi
any man who would construct such a double Jjj
question for an inexperienced person, and it
does not sound well for any man knowingly
to put a wrong construction on such person's
answer.
Miss Means bad not violated the Sabbath
day. If there had been any violation of the T
sanctity of the day it was done by the telephone
exchange in requiring her to work.
She was its servant, and as suoh she was
bound to obey, and Is not responsible. vi
Until there is a law of the church forbid- la
ding members to work for the exchange, she w,
could not have been lawlully turned out of th
luc uuuruu lur uolug bU.
As we understand It, the pious prosecutor ^
allowed two brothers-in-law who worked on
Sunday to remain In the communion from ^
which Miss Means was excluded. No com- ec
ment necessary. '
Nearly everybody In this country, either
works himself or requires bis employees to do (Q
so. To begin: Preachers, we are told, have lo
been known to work on or to study their ser- JJj
mons on Sunday morning. In so doing they it;
were Just as guilty of a violation of the Sab- cc
bath as the scholar who studied his lesson, or bt
as the lawyer who worked on his case, or as ra
the editor who may have written editorials, ot
or as any one elre who may have written let- w
tera. la
There are few families in this community Pf
(a
who do not sit down to warm meals three u,
times a day. To prepare these warm meals re
somebody must work. No matter how pious 1
our good people may be, we are not Informed
N of any one who does not require their ser\
vants to cootc on Sunday, and we have noi
f even beard of any preacher who refuses warm ^
food on that day. Somebody has to work to
make It lresh and warm. In hundreds of
places we have beard of people working on cr
Sunday, but Miss Means is the only person
who has yet been excommunicated for so do- "J?
log. As there are many thousand women
who cook and do household work every Sun- Ni
day, is It not possible tbat it is the respecta- ^
bility ol the work which Miss Means is doing
tbat excites the holy horror of the pious efl
court? If it is not so, why have they not
taken steps to excommunicate their own )D
cooks and chambermaids? If tbey are really Hi
conscientious and honest in their expressed ?
opinion of the sanctity of tbe Sabbath, why bi|
have they not themselves withdrawn from Ti
tbe communion of the church, because they
compel cooks and chambermaids to work on ty
Sunday? an
The cbnrcb has a perfect right to make any
rule it pleases as to its membership, but tbe an
outside world would have more respect for mi
tbe cburch which does not seek to oppress 8,t
orphan and unprotected women, while giving
special privileges to men. Let the same rule
r- . apply to all.
While tbe sanctity of the Sabbath is now so
zealously urged, may we not ask if there is 71
not profanity in the pulpit, and an irreverent
manner of calling tbe name of the Almighty
ft hnnrlrAH t.lmon in nno hrlof hnnr Wu mhu?
right do we bear of "God Almighty's earth,"
or "God's church," or "God's Judgment," or
"God's ways?" Has any mortal man yet f0]
been authorized to call His name, except In ho
reverential awe? ,l

EE POSTMASTER GENERAL.
In InveKtigation of the Democracy
of Onr Reform ConicrcHNnieii.
Phe Columbia State so far Is the only paper
South Carolina that lias published a comste
stenographic report of the receut hearg
given the black-listed Congressmen by
istraaster General Blssell. The report Is too
ig for our columus and in order thai our
filers might be provided with all that was
id at the hearing, we made arrangement* to
culate the semi-weekly State as a suppleentof
to-day's edition of the Herald. The
port may be accepted as absolutely correct,
was made by a competent stenographer.?
voir Hill HprnlrL
The Hock Hill Herald will please add the
ess and Banner to the list of papers which
iblished Iroin the State the full stenographreport
of the proceedings before the Poetaster
General. The State containing It was
leived at Abbeville Monday evening aod by
lesday night at twelve o'clock our suppleent
containing every word of it was on the
ly to subscribers. Including the heads it
ade nearly eleven columns of nonpareili
aklng over sixty thousand ems.
After printing the Press and Banner on the
h, we printed special edition of another pair,
and set sixty pages ot brief?the supple,
ent, the sixty pages of briefs, and the speal
edition of another paper, being over and
>ove our regular work.
It was a big thing for the State to make the
ost important scoop of the year. Every cit.
en of the State should read it. Nothing, of
jythlog like its length, has been so general'
read by our subscribers as has been the six>en
column excerpt which we made from
le State last week. The full report olanyilng
like this Is worth any amount ot
traps, picked up here and there, and the speal
iu this instance lies in the fact thai no
;her papers than the State, the Rock Hill
erald and the Press and Banner did it. The
;ople are primarily indebted to the Stale for
ie best Dicce that has been In the impers in
lany a day.
The Herald says:
Like the Greenville News, we are inclined
> think the Postmaster General will decline
i make any formal decision on the question
bether the three tabooed Congressmen are
emocrats or not, but will treat them Just as
Lher Democratic Congressmen are treated,
hat, it seems to us, Is the conclusion he will
3 likely to reach from the facts and statelents
presented to him. The three men have
jne before him, renounced the Third party
ad declared their allegiance as Democrats,
3d, as a practical man, he will no doubt ac>pt
the dircct, public declaration of men as
ie best possible evidence. We infer from
ie remark i of the Postmaster General the
Istlnct conviction that be does not Intend lo
jnish any man for having opposed Cleve,nd
before the nomination or for anything he
lay have said against Cleveland.

ionable Millinery.
The Second Quarterly Meeting of the Abbe
lie County Alliance came oil' at Abbeville
Bt Thursday in the Court room.
Amone the distinguished visiting brethren
b learn was Mr. L\ P. Duncan, Secretary of
e National Alliance.
Mr. J. W. Bowden, leader of the Third party
id editor of the Cotton Plant, in also underood
to have been present.
Mr.Keitt, of Newberry, who Is also believed
be a headlight In both the Third party and
lllance. honored the meeting with his presice.
l'Ue delegates represented various sections
the county, and were chiefly from among
e faithful members who are never derelict
their duty to the organization which they
ve so well and In which they have such Unmnded
hopes. They believe the Alliance
111 yet be instrumental in bringing prospery
to the farming Interests of the whole
iuntry.
The meeting was a pleasant one, and the
ethren dwelt together in unity, and sepated
In harmony and goodwill toward each
her.
One of the notable features of this meeting
as the absence ol the usual political enthussm,
and the lack of zeal or effort* for the
tlltlcal preferment of favorite brethren. As
r as we are informed neither the sub-treas- {
y nor the free coinage of silver was recur- ?
d to by any brother.
Some work Is supposed to have been done
the interest of Alliance papers, but of this
a are not particularly informed.
In their councils it is said that they did
>lhlngatall effecting the public, and that I
ey did uotblng which might not be publish- I
I in the newspapers. K
It Is said that propositions were made look- ?
g to the perfecting of arrangements for 1
>ldlng picnics during the leisure time In the v
ops this Mummer. . c
Among the brethren present were Messrs.
,mes T. Haskln, H. W. Bowie, W E. I^eslle, ^
H. Hughes, Wra. Munday, J. T. Robertson,
A. Bolles. W. C. Shaw, J. E.Todd, F. \V. R. ,
since, R. E. Hill, J. Y. Jones, John R. Blake,
B. Holloway, U. W. McKee. C. E. Sharp,
ins. W. McCord. James A. McCord,
rhe town realised some substantial ben- <1
t from this mee'ing. Many delegates
ought the ladles of tnelr households, and i
title the gentlemen were In council, listen- [
k to words of wisdom as they fell from the
38 of boDored speakers their wives, their
iters, and their daughters, were being waited
on in our millinery and other stores, where C
Z wales of the choicest garniture were made, g
ie store keepers were busy all day. The
tne of our millinery has gone abroad, and it
iw seems that every lady in Abbeville counts
bound to come to this market Tor fashionIe
