O my beloved ones, ,?*;
How long did I lament i? .,
When "through the grave and gale of j" i'f,
death." ?1
Out of this world you went! y
<5,
And still from sun to sun, p'
From solemn eve to eve,
How often 1 lament anew n ,
And lor vour presence grieve ! Q
How often little things
Will your dear ways recall,
And bring a mist before my eyes,
A shadow over all!
And though I sometimes think _
You may be very near, I _
It does not still the Inward cry, i
"If only they were here P' J,J
Yet there are other tlmeR,
Dark in themselves, 'tis true.
When I am filled with thankfulness, pjj
Beloved ones, for you.
When some sharp trial comes,
Wh$n cruel things befall.
Hardsnlps and disappointed hopes?
Vou have escaped from all. . You
have escaped from all!
I eay It o'er and o'er,
With thankfulness in your behalf
Impossible of yor^
Sin Is lor you o'erpast. { ]
The needless fret, the strife,
The failure and the wearlnens N
That crush this mortal life.
A flood of Joy flows In
That rtrntcnn the sense of crlef. [5
Ab the fair vision of your peace ' 1
Comes to my glad belief. A
I cease to wish you here;
Lead them, dear Lord, I sny, nn
From blessedness to blessedness, I'll
On their Immortal way. OU

HAVE YOU A BAD COLD?
A Simple Remedy for Grip to be D
Fonntl iu Every Honsehold. U'
"Willi amston, S. CM Feb. 4.?To the
Editor of The State : A year ago, when
the influenza or grip was so prevalent,
I noticed a report on the disease from r\
one of the best hospitals of Europe. I ]
This hospital is in Edinburgh, Scot- ^
land. At the time of the report hundreds
of influenza cases had been Mi
treated there. After fighting the epi- j"*
demic with varying success, a happy ktn
accident lea me superiuieuueui iu - ?
adopt an alkaline treatment with an olh
extreme case that was brought in. A ~~
fall dose of saleratus was given every g
"two hours. Although the patient was
in convulsions when brought in, she
became quieter a short time after the
first dose; and only three doses were 8<
given before the patient was clearly on J,gI
the way to recovery. In three days Hu
she was counted well. This same s
simple treatment was then followed
with a thousand, not one of whom is
died. Best of all, not only was the in- Lat
liuenza promptly cured, but there was j?
no unpleasant or dangerous symptoms *s
following recovery. It has been ob- Ho
served that not more die of the influ- s
enza than of what may follow it. p. j
From some work in my chemical ?
laboratory, carried on before this report
came out, I had concluded that s
the influenza was at least associated Do
with excessive acidity of the tystem,
if it was not caused by this abuormal vii
state. I was so certain of the correct- 8
ness of this view that on being g
thrown in bed myself with the influ- p. j
* " ' SA. U ..1 Q
enza, I treated myseu ouiy witu ai- ~
kaiine drinks to counteract the acid. $
The result was that iustead of two or Gr<
three weeks of punyness, I missed
only one day from work.
The success with my own case was He
so astonishing that I have been called 8
to treat other cases; and of about ^
twenty-five treated very lew have had s
to give up work for more than a day? L||
some not at all. ru
Not being a physician, I should feel S
some hesitancy in offering my cure, if, B;J
after I bad begun to try it, it had not wi]
received the high endorsements quot- am
ed. shi
At first, I used the carbonate of litha,
which is the best of the alkalis for tbe ?
purpose. But as my practice (ail ?
charity) enlarged, I left so expensive a _
drug, and contented myself with the g
carbonate of potash and soda. These I
I found practically as good as the li- I
tba. I
For the sake of the suffering public, "
I would say that tbe dose 1 have used
for grown patients has been a level
teaspoonful of baking soda, dissolyed in
nleutv of water, taken every two hours
until soreness and headache are gone,
and then one extra dose for good tneas- pi
ure. It is not best to lake a. dose just
before or after eating. I have rarely
found more than four doses needed.
Since the system is in an acid state,
calomel is of course a very dangerous _
medicine, and many deaths from in- Si
fiuenza are, without reasonable doubt,
traceable to the use of calomel in the
disease.
It is interesting to note that, when
all else failed, our grandmothers used n
to cure the worst colds with "flre-coal All
tea." This was simply a crude salertus
treatment. So there is nothing
new under the sun, aud our wise
theory simply proves the soundness of
another of their old practical ways.?
