A CURIOUS PROPHECY.
A I'art of It Has Item fr?ullillc<l?Disasters
to t'omo.
[Philadelphia l'ress.]
Ill August, 1S">7, tlie Pavarian Allegeuieine
Zeitung printed a remarkable
prophecy, which hail been made
. by and old hermit many years before.
J n it the rise ot Napoleon 111. was clearly
outlined, as were also the AnstroPrussian
and the Franco-Prussian
wars and the Commune of Paris. He
told how toe death ot' Pope Pius would
occur in 1876 or 1877, and how it would
be followed by a Tusco-Kussian war,
both predictions bejug but slightly
wrong. He said tlmt Uermany would)
have three Emperors in oueyear before
the end of the century, which we
know was verified to the letter in lS'Js.
He missed it one in i lie nu in Iter of
United States Presidents that were to
die by assassination, which was remarkably
close-gussing, to say the
least.
Now for the future: The opening of
the twentieth century is !< se** Manhattan
Island and the whole of Xew
York City submerged*in the waters of
ho vfmiunn K;ist. River and the J?ay.
Cuba is to break in two, ami part of it,
including a portion of the city of Havana,
to sink beneath the waves.
Florida and lower California are to
break loose from the mainland and
carry their load of human freight to
the bottom of the sea.
The twenty-fifth isto be the last of
the United States Presidents; and Ireland
is to be a kingdom and Kngland
a repulic by the end of tlje next century.
If this seer of seers is to be relied
upon, the United States will soon be
divided, and San Francisco, Salt Lake

not very high up. No sooner had the
head and shoulders of the head.master
appeared before the eyes of the boys up
there than, in their astonishment,
they let go the cord, aud the future
Archbishop of Canterbury lay sprawling
on the ground.
One of the boys had sent into
the town for something, aiid that was
the way he was to rejoin them, as,
with many apologies, they informed
their head master, and the latter, being
only slightly shaken, and fortunately
not hurt, was good enogh to let
the offenders off that time with a light
punishment.

The heads of most of the veneomous

just beyond the neck. Without exception
they have fan#*, either always
erect, or raised and laid back at will.
These faugs are long, sharp-pointed
teeth, with a hollow groove running
their entire length. At the root of
each fang is a little bag of poison.
When the snake bites, the motion
presses the poison-sac, and its contents
flow down through the hollow in the
tooth into the puncture or wound.
The harmless little forked tongue is often
spoken of by the uninformed as
the snake's "stinger." Now, there is
no propriety in the name, as the pois
onous snakes do not sting, but bite,
their victims. There is no creature,
even if brought from foreign countries i
where "rattlers" do not exist, but 1
will halt and tremble at the lirst warning
sound of the rattle.
Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, with others,
has been making experiments with the
venom of different serpents. He has
found that, astile from its poisonous <
qualities, it contains living germs,
which have the power of increasing i
enormously fast. So, you sue, when
an animal is bitten, these tiny bits of <
life, entering with the poison, cause
harmful action to begin almost at 1
once. Dr. Mitchell has found that the
nervous center controlling the act of
strikingseetns to be in tiie spinal cord,
for if he cut oflj a snake's head, and
then pinched its tail, the stump of its 1
neck turned back, and would have 1

Lift your hat reverently, says the
New York .Recorder, when you pass
the teacher of the primary class. She
is the great angel of the Republic.
She takes the bantling fresh from the
home nest, full of pouts anil passions
?an ungovernable little wivtch, whose
own mother honestly admits that she
seudshim to school to gut rid of him.
This lady, who knows her business,
takes a whole carjload of these little
anarchists, one of whom, single-handed
and alone, is more than a match for
his parents, and at once puts them in a
way of being useful and upright citizens.
At what expense of toil, pa-1
tience, and soul weariness ! Lift your'
hat to her !
There is but one ollicial in the l'nit-1

called ''honorable " It is the lieuten-;

title is given him by law.

Orleans, St. Louis, Washington and
Boston are to be made capitals of the
six republics that are to be reared on
the ruins of the present United States.
To return to Europe: The end of the
twentieth century will not find either
Italy or France upon the maps, and
Berlin will have been totally destroyed
by an eathquake.

at the end, and discovered tliey had
captured the head master.
An unreported amusing incident
once occurred to Archbishop Tail
when he was H?ad Master of iiiigby.
While passing one of the houses occupied
by student he saw a rope dangling
from one of the windows.
Seizing the rope he instantly found
it pulled so vigorously from the other
end that his feet came off" the ground,
and he was left hanging in the air and
drawn slowly up to the window almost
before lie knew where he was or
what risk he ran.
