A Sninplr <l?ioslloii.
Gathered at a breakfast fable recently
were half a dozen of what might be!
called "model Chri>tians." One was
the president of the young men's society
in one of our jarge?t metropolitan
churches; another, a ladv, was prominent
in Christian Endeavor circles;
still another had been for years teacher
of a large Bible class, and the rest were
all church members and active in
church work.
The "president" startled everybody
by lskinir, "Whatjis the meaningofthe
word'Jerusalem?" ' Of course, everybody
at the table knew that "saleni"
meant peace. P?ut what did "Jem"
'!>? . HM.I.* 4*k?w?lwk?* HV
IIK'ilM.' 1 lit; liliMn iv*?* uv-i v
claimed, " I've st in tied uo other book,
and I*111 sure I don't know the meaning
of the word '.Jerusalem,'" :in?l she
sprang up to find her Teacher's Jiible
and bunt up tlie meaning of the word.
Not one at the table knew it, and yet
that word, how often it is in our
thoughts, on our tongues!
We don't propose here to save the
interested reader from consulting his
Hible Dictionary or Teacher's l>il>le to
learn what Jerusalem means, if he
look it up he will remember it.
Another <|Uestion came up at the
same table which puzzled the literary
members of the circle, one of whioii
hhd been reading Ras.selas. When did
its author, l)r. Johnson, live? One of
those present had an impression that
he lived in the time of (George III, but
had to go to the cyclopedia to be sure
that she was right.
Most of us have a great deal of general
knowledge, of impressions about
tilings, very vague impressions. I>'nt
it a good use of time to reduce our
Knowledge 10 particulars. u> wmc <um
impressions within a certain definite
outlide? lo know the exact meaning of
the terms we u>c? i'erhaps that is what
these long summer days are given us
for.
[Heroism at Home.
Kow useless our lives seem to us
sometimes! How we long for an opportunity
to perform some great action!
We become tired of the routine of home
life, and imagine we would he far hap-:
pier in other scenes. We think of life's
great battlefield and wish to be heroes.'
We think of the good we might do if
our lot had been cast in other scenes.
We forget that the world bestows no
titles as noble as father, mother, sister,
or brother. In the sacred precincts ofj
home we have many chances of hero-]
ism. The daily acts of self-denial fori
the good of a loved one, the gentle
word of soothing for another's trouble,
t care for tlie sick, may all seem as nothing;
yet who can tell the good they
may accomplish? Our slightest woru
may have an influence over another
for good or evil. We are daily sowing
the seed which will bring forth some
sort of harvest. Well will it be for us
if the harvest will be one we will be
proud to garner. If some one in that
dear home can look back in after years
and, as he tenderly utters our name,
say: "Her words and example prepared
me for a life of usefulness, to her I
owe my present happiues-:," we may
well say, "1 have not lived in vain."

several small rugs may be used though
