Our Pattern.
A weaver sat one day ;?t Ips loom.
Among tlie colors bright.
With tin- pattern of his copying
Hun;: fair ami plain in sight.
Uilt the weaver's thought* were wandering
Au-av on a distant truck,
As ho threw thoshuttle in his ii:tn<l
Wearilv Jorward anil back.
Ami he turni-il his lint eye to tin- groun<1.
Anil tears fell on the wool".
For his thoughts, ahs Were not with his home, I
Nor the wile beneath his roof.
When her voice reedled him suddenly
To himself, as ?lie sadly ;
' <?h,*oe is me. for your work is spoiled,
And what will w e do lor bread
And the weaver looked and saw
Ills work must be undone,
K?>r the threads were wmn;, Uio colors uminen
Where tin* bitter tears had run,
i
"Alack ! alack !" said the weaver,
"And tills had been ri^lit
If 1 lmil n?>t looked at my work, but kept
The pattern in my siirht.
All, sad it was for the weaver.
And had for his luckless wife ;
And sail it will he lor us If ?o say
At the end of our tusk of life.
, "The colors that we had to weave
Were bright In our early years.
But we wove the tis?ue wrong, and stained
The Woof with bitte i tears.
. "We wove a web of doubt and fear?
No faith, and hope, and love?
Because we looked at our work, and in.t
At our Pattern up above."
- - Debt* Dirt and tlic Drvil.
To keep debt, dirt and the devil onl
of my cottage has been my greatest
wish ever since I set up housekeeping
Surely the.-e form a trinity of evils
that * should be carefully guarded
airainst. A man who is in debt, is a
slave, toiliuir to meet the demands of
another. He cannot call what he possesses
his own. He had better a j^ivat. |
deal have It s?\ and owe no man anything
according to the apostolic injunction
than to have large possession
for which iu whole.or in part belongs
to another. A man in debt is like a
man overboard with a eivat weight
about his neck with which l?y great
exertion, he may reach the shore, but
nevertheless, may sink him at any
moment. But whatever excuse may
be made for men going into debt, surely
ooue can be ottered for their living
in dirt. Soap and water are cheap, and
brushes and brooms are not very expensive.?
Spurgeou.
"The attempt to say a good word for
the secular press reminds us of the attempt
of Rev. Dr. .Bellows years ago
to defend the stage. J-Ie had no sooner
championed the theater as the
source of great possible good than the
Black Crook was put upon the boards,
aud continued the leading attractions ;
' r !?.* Frw iv'linle ui'Siuntl.
"4 liIIC Vll(J 1VI 111V )>
ry Ward Beecher said a little later
that the stage responded to Dr. Bellows'
encomiums by 'turning a stopcock
of damnation' ami flooding the
city. There are some animals in this
world wh >m it is not safe either to
fight or to pet."?Interior.
