The Abbeville press and banner. (Abbeville, S.C.) 1869-1924, January 06, 1892, Image 8
Is The Carrier's Address,
To the Patrons of the Press and Banner,
Christmas, 1891.
^GOOD morning to you, one and all,
Kind patrons of the Banner !
"May each of you, both great and small,
Enjoy in perfect manner,?
Be blest with life's contentments all,?
IThis Christmas morn.
Since last my hardship did indite
A verse or two like this is,
I trust you've been as gay and bright,?
The boys, also the misses,?
As when you made my heart so light
Last Christmas morn.
And as I now remember well
The nice amounts you rave me,?
My salary to greatly swell,
And from the cold to save me,?
My gratitude I cannot tell,
So full my heart.
Since Christmas last, not one of you,
We happily can say it,
Have failed to run your business through,
And all can say to day it
[8 partially,?quite largely due,
To Carrier Gus.
I They tell us that in other towns
There's lack of circulation,?
En The currency that goes the rounds,
So badly needs inflation :
In Abbeville, tfhere wealth abounds
? There's no such cry.
If Now if there is a man in town,
B Whose name I fail to mention,
5' Just let him bring his silver down
K And call to my attention,
In verse his name must come around
1 Next Christmas morn.
I VIL
I You cannot doubt, if you will near
E This very bold assertion,
B That I will make, without a fear,?
' With nothing of perversion:
That each upon the list this year
I "Will do me proud."
^There's 0. P. Heath, where Messrs. Hayne
I v And Smith and many more,
i Deal out the very finest goods
I -For dollars by the score.
I The next is Mr. Templeton,
I With gen'ral merchandise,
I With handsome clerks as ever were,
p And prices to surprise.
C/Onieunuiienes eicgam, ,
You find the second door,
>vAnd Mr. Thomas Thompson runs, I
V This splendid candy store.
I
Then Minter makes a pretty show
With funfcture so new,?
Of late design, so very cheap,
? Ycfa'll buy a set or two.
And Rosenberg's,?just go in there,
Where Messrs. Bob and Dock,
And John and Julius and his Pa
Will show you through the stock.
For saddles, harness and the like,
You'll find no better place,
Than Hammond's to supply yourself,
L- To run or trot a race.
I jf you want fancy groceries,
W Drop in at Messrs. Hills,
| Where Mr. Mc or Will or Jim
^ Will promptly fill your bills.
B It's millinery that you want?
T Well, Haddon's close at hand,
Where wives and daughters get their hats,
So stylish and so grand.
But Mr. William Bell, you see,
_ Has gone no where as yet,
Tne miiiinery goous ne sens,
Are fine as you can get.
At Bell's, if you've a watch that needs
(Repairing, or some grease,
You'll find the man to do it right,
His name is Dobson Reese.
No better man in town you find
I Than Mr. John G. E.,
And all who know him, know he needs
No eulogy from me.
Now Mr. Lawson's in the town,
Be sure to go see him,
You'll ne'er regret the money spent
With long, slim, Mr. Jim.
You say you're feeling slightly sick ?
Well, look up Mr. Speed,
For he'll dispense you, very cheap,
The medicine you, need ;
Or Dr. Penny, just as good,
And true as true can be,
Will sell you all the drugs you want
Except the drug: "Whiskee."
As down the street you go, you see
The store of Mr. Hill,
Where you can sell your cotton well,
And make a groc'ry bill.
And Messrs. Joel Smith and Sons,
They know just what to do,
Whenever DeoDle come to town
To get the finest shoe.
K
Now when you see a handsome store,
Where clerks all serve you right
And Cater to your ev'ry want,?
The owner's Mr. White.
No need for me to say a word
Of Mr. G. Arch D.
The other side, just opposite,
Is Mr. John G. E.
And Mr. Cannon's no small gun,
He deals in farm supplies,?
To sell the farmers goods as cheap,
He any one defies.
Now don't forget that Mr. Moore
And Mr. Miller too,
If any thing to eat you want,
Will show you what to do.
At Mr. J. D. Chalmer's store,
If you will not forget,
To ?0 and see his furniture,
You'll buy a pretty set.
There's Mr, Weber's clothing store,
Where suits are cheap, as dirt,
If you will buy a suit from him '
You surely wont be hurt.
Then go to Milford, Cox or Steltz,
Or Douglass, Perry, King,
And if you don't get treated well,
I don't know how to sing.
If I had time to write the names,
In verse, of every one,
I'd sit me down and think and think
And on each have a pun. So
now at cJose of ninety-one,
I bid you all good-bye,
God grant you all prosperity,
And Heaven when you die.
