The Press and Banner.
BY HUGH WILSON,
OTorlnpnHflv. Ofit 28. 1891.
Twelve !Pnges, 0 to 12
After so long a time Philips Brooks
has been made Protestant Episcopal
Bishop of the diocese of Massachusetts.
Done at Boston, Oct, 14 1891.
Three reporters for the Inter ocean
and the engineer were killed Oct. 15
in a wreck on the Chicago and Eastern
Road at Crete. The reporters were
riding on the engine.
Wade Hands has been found guilty
of murdering Miss Hornsby. The
deed was committed last year a few
miles below Columbia.
An Ev?ry*D?y Queen.
"Helen."
"Yes, mother. 7'm coming."
With a sigh of discontent Helen
laid aside her book and tied on apron.
"Eatiug, eating, eating. How tired
I am of it all. It seems as if the
whole work of the world turned on
eating, ft is the first tiling in the
morning, utmost the last thingat night,
anu all the way between. If only J
could stay h. iv and read, instead ol
muddling abmi; in the kitchen."
No one would nave used the term in
reference to Hek-n's?;-.m*k, neat handed
movement about her won;. Still, hei
heart to-day was less in ti than usual,
as her mother soon perceiw d.
"You're not going to put ? n th<
sliced peaches in that dish, dear?"
"Why not, mother?"
"I always think fruit looks so mucL
pretter in the high glass dish. I sup
posed you thought so."
"Sol do, mother,"said Helen, bringin
or tlie dish. "But. after all," she ait
ded with a little impatience, "what's
the use of making such a fuss about
the way things look for the short timt
we sit at the table? It seems to be
contemptible, sometimes, the hours
and hours we spend getting ready foi
eating?hours ttiat might be so mud
better spent."
Her mother looked at her with a
smile, half of amusement, half ol
surprise.
" YVbat would you do without it, Hel
eu ? Even you with all your highei
ambitions, could scarcely get alonj;
without eating."
"No, I am sorry to say I suppose ]
couldn't, iiutl would 03 glad to Cc
with a crust and glass of water if J
could have the time to study and lit
myself for better things.
"And what would your father and
brother do ?"
> "O, of course, tney wouiu never ]?ui
up with auy such thing. I feci out 01
patience sometimes when I see then;
coming up to diuner. Just to eat, eat
eat. Now, confers, mother, don't yoi
think yourself there is a great clyu
more trouble than necessary niadt
/ about cooking?"
"I have no doubt there is, Helen, in
^pme quarters. But when you reinem
ber that the Lord has made us as we are
dependent upon the eating which you
hold in such lofty disdain, I cannut
feel that it is such a trifling matter."
"O, I dont't mean to despise necessary
food, mother. But how far we gt
beyond what would keep u.sa live."
"Perhaps so. Perhaps not so veiy
~ far beyond what serves to keep us in
the best, heartiest lile. If eating wert
intended merely to keep us alive, 1
scarcely think we should have had
^ such a wide selection. lit tad ant
meat would do that, but how many other
things the loving Lord made for hi*
children ! Would the bounteous eartl
hive given us such riches of fruit ant
vegetables, if it were a thing to b<

"You are beginning to crowd ni(
father cosey, mother," said Helen
with a smile, as she took the lettijc<
leaves she had been about to throw
away and laid them as a gar nisi
around a dish of salad ; "still I cannoi
help wishing that I might be one ol
those for whom some other duty hat
been laid out than this everlasting
round of housework."
Mother shook her head with i
serious look.
"There are thousands and thousand!
of girls all over the land, yes, all ovei
the world, Helen, to whom it is laii
out to do this same housework whicl
troubles you. It is not in manj
respects exactly the word which main
would select if they had the choice
> but you must remember that very feu
have the choosing of their lifewoik
And as that is so, and there is so mud
housework to do and so many musl
do it, would it not be far better to brinf
it up to a standard of sweetness au<
dignity instead of trampling it as low
is we can and then spending mucli
useless regret upon our inability to ris<
above it and escape from it ?"
"Go ou mother."
"If you give a little thought to it
my daughter, you will see that then
is much in it to cull forth tlie best ii
a young girl. It is loving ministering
to those we lore.
Just as far as we brinsj our besl
endeavors to it, making home swee
and attractive, so far shall we elevati
our work and ourselves."
Helen set down a meat dish to niak<
her mother a bow.
"Thank you ma'am. You'll b<
making me think mvstlfuqueen next.'
"1 don't know any better qneei
dear, than the queen of a bright
happy home?made so mainly by hci
own efforts. Success and happiness
say I, to the house queens all over tin
land, and may they grow to be more
and more awake to their royal privilege

Why a Cut FallN With Impunity.
It is quite wonderful to sec- a cal
jump from a height. It never seem!
to hurt itself, or to get giddy whittle
fall. It always lands on his feet,
and these are so beautifully padded
that they seldom or never gel
broken. Why does not the aiiima
get a heauache after its jump? Wh>
does it not receive a concussion of the
brain, as a man or a dog would i
he preformed a similar acrobatic feat'
The skull, when we shall see that ii
has a regular partition wall project'
ing from its sides, a good way inward
toward the center, so as to prevent
the brain from suffering from concussion.
This is indeed a beautiful
contrivance, and shows an admirable
internal structure, made in wonderful
conformity with external form
and nocturnal habit.?Scientfic American.
