Woman and War.
The Countess Scback read, at the
late Berne Peace Congress, the following
communication from the women
of France, which was signed by Maria
Deraisme, the president, and V.
Griesstraut, the vice-president of the
Ladies' Committee of the International
Arbitration and Peace Association
at Paris:
"In the name of tbe Society for the
amelioration of the destiny of women,
we express to the members of the Conference
at Berne the warmest sympathy.
"We desire, firstly, that all women
present at the Conference join the efforts
of their sisters at Paris and of
France for the substitution of the pacific
means of arbitration and of the
International Tribunal in place or war
for the settlement of differences, because,
of all the obstacles to progress,
to morality, to the well-being of na
tious, nothing has an influence of
more evil omen and more demoralizing
than war.
"The women are the first inoffensive
and innocent victims; then let us un.
derstand our power and our duty in
this great mission of peace which belongs
to women."

The Hunted Hurt.
A traveler relates, "I once stood and
watched a hart being pursued by hunters,
and a most painful sight it was. I
The poor creature staggered along, itsj

eyes Hoc ana uioousnor, wmie tue:{
great tears streamed down its face, j.
Its flanks were torn by the prickly fo. j
liage through which it had rushed. It
knew its only safety was in the hills, .
and laboriously it staggered upward. ^
By the time it had reached compara- *
tive safety it was thoroughly exhausted,
and widely sniffed the air for water.
Soon it came to a stream into 1
which it plunged. There it stood, almost
immersed, and when it stepped
from the water it looked quite frc?h
and strong, and began quietly to nib- '
ble the herbage on the bank. 'As the '
hart panteth after water-brooks, so '
panteth my soul after Thee, 0 CJod." (
To be dexterous in danger is a virtue '

Tbe Question?The Answer.
What can the sinner do to propitiate
God, and secure the pardon of his maay
sins ? This, to the penitent crying
out, "My sins are a burden too heavy
for me to bear," is a question of immense
importance. He feels that he
can do nothing, but on the contrary>
that he deserves banishment from the
peace-speaking presence of God because
of his transgression. He feels
that the words of the prophet suit his
case: "Woe is me, for lam undone,
for I am a man of unclean lipsa#d ^
he "greatly desires to have his transgression
blotted out; but the question
still presses upon him, With what ar- ^
guments shall he draw near to God?
But here i3 the answer: "Notforyour
sake, but J or mine own sake, will I
blot out your transgressions." Surely
this is a plea that any penitent heart
can hopefully use.
Preaching and Practicing.
That was plain and noble testimony
that the young man is reported to have
given to the examining committee of
our church. "Under whose preaching
were you converted?" they asked.
"Under nobody's preaching," was the
reply: "I was converted under my
mother's practicing." Gracious trib
ute was that to parental example!
And perhaps there was little talking
in it all, little urging to duty and exhorting
to obedience. The temDerture
n ? _ 4
of the mother's life was so sweet and
salubrious that it woke and matured
the seed of the grace that had been j
dropped into the heurt, and it sprang
up spontaneously.
4 <|> *
Some people are afraid of anything
like joy in religion. They have none
themselves, and they do not love to see
in others. Thier religion is something
like the stars, very high and very
clear, but very cold. When they see
tears of anxiety, or tears of joy, they
cry out, "Enthusiasm ! Enthusiasm !'
"I sat down under his shadow with
great delight." Is this enthusiasm ?
"May the God of hope fill you with all
joy and peace in believing." If it be
really in sitting under the shadow of
Uhrist, let there be no bounds to our
oy. Oh ! if God would but open our'
;yes and give us simple, child-like
"alth to look to Jesus, to eit under his
shadow, then would songs of joy rise
from all our dwellings.
The "good fellow" who liberally
helps the Church from the outside is
:>ften put in favorable contrast with
the close-tisted man who shirks and
stints in his gifts inside the Church.
Let neither of them be deluded by Satan.
No degree of meanness in one
person can absolve another from religious
obligation. Nashville Ch. Jit1.
