Wonderful Specs. BY KEV. P. JJ. 8TKONCJ. One dfly the sweetest fairy. Good Huraor Is her name. With footstepR light and airy. Into my study came. "Write to the lads anil lassies," .She said, "throughout the land. And say I have some glasses, - Most wonderful on hand. "Each pair the power possesses So to affect the sight, ,, That nothing seen distresses, - For everything looks right. "In fact. It. Is amazing (So tell the girls and hoys,) Whan through these glasses gazing, How griefs turn into joys. "What once seemed sad and dreary Through them looks glad and gay; The cloudiest day seems cheery. And work appears but play. "And now," she said, when starting, "That you may know how true Is all I've been imparting, I'll leave a pair with you." I've found that she related Not half what mieht bo told; Their worth could not be stated In rarest gem or gold. They give to all things beauty. And, lowly though it be. There's charm in any duty I through these glasses see. So. children, get and prove them. They'll cause yon glad surprise. And then do not remove them A moment from your eyes. For one must always use them, I've learned, so bear in mind, Or else he's sure to lose t hem, And they are hard to find. Housekeeping Melodies. Sing a song of cleaning house! Pocket full of nails! Four-and-twenty dust pans. Scrubbing-brooms and pails! When the door is opened, Wife begins to sing: "Just help me move this bureau here, And hang this picture, won't you, dear ? And tack the carpet by the door, And stretch this one a little more. And drive this nail, and screw this screw; And here's a Job I have for you? This closet door will never catch. I think you'll have to fix the latch. And oh, while you're about it, John, I wish you'd put the cornice on. And hang this curtain, when you're done I'll hand you up the other one; This box has got to have a hinge Before I can put on the fringe: And won't you mend that broken chair? I'd like a hook put up right there. The bureau drawer must have a knob; And here.R another little job? I really hate to ask you, dear? But could you fix a bracket here?" And on It eoea. when these are through, With this and that and those to uo, Ad Infinitum, and more too, All In a merry jingle? And Isn't It enough to make A man wish he was single? (Almost.) St. Paul's Necessity. [TAKEN FROM GOULBURN'S THOUGHTS ON FASTING.] Do uot murmur because a restriction is thus laid upon you in things which ye might innocently enjoy; fordo not I myself lay many such restrictionf upon myself? In one point especially I do so. I might?not innocently alone, but most lawfully?claim supE>rt from you to whom I preach. The ord hath ordained that they which preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel; and I have as good a right tc stand upon this ordinance as othei Apostles. If I threw myself upon you for maintenances it would only be asserting what is my Divine prerogative, and claiming from you not a gra tuity but the fulfilment of a solemn duty. But all of you know that I never stood upon my right, nor accepted ? single denarius from any of you . Why not? Partly, because I felt "that this manifest disinterestedness will conduce to the great cause which I advocate, and give me influence and weight in certain quarters where I de sire an influence. But I have another reason. I know that it is a hard thing to be saved. I know that my dcai Master said that straight was the gati aud narrow was the way that leadetb unto life, and that few there be thai And it. f know that I am a highly privileged man; but that does not make me a safe man. Rather I know that eminent privileges involve dangers, even as the being placed on a lofty pinnacle creates dizziness and imperils life. In short, I know that J am unsafe if I use my Christian liberty to the full extent. I know that J cannot insist upon everything which J might lawfully enjoy, and at the saim time be secure. So I do not stand upon my right in (his particular. I earn my own bread by the sweat of my brow. When I have comforted an. Fifty miles North of Columbia, is the town of Blackstock on the C. C. &. A.
