A T-Party.
She twirled upon her tip toes light,
Tossed back her tangled tresses bright,
And cried, "I'm truly tired of play;
I'll have a tea-party to-day!"
She set the table 'neath a tree,
With tempting tarts, and toasts, and tea.
Ten tiny cups upon the tray,
Ten plates and spoons In trim array,
Ten twinkling tapers thin and tall,
And then the feast was ready all.
The thrushes trilled and twittered sweet,
The turf was tender 'neath her feet;
Her tidy cap with lace was rimmed.
Her tasteftil gown was tucked and trimmed.
"Now here am I, and here's the treat!"
She cried; "but who is there to eat ?
I'm very thlrRty for my tea;
I tblnk I'll be the company."
And sipping now and tasting then,
She ate and drank for all the ten.
Girls' Writing.
1.1
Tjtins sauuiu luua w men iiauumning,
for it may serve them at some future
crisis better than the short-band
or the type-writer.
There is a lady clerk in the Department
of the Interior, Mrs Avery by
name, who has a snug and easy place
of sixteen hundred dollars a year,
chiefly on account of the extraordinary
excellence of her penmanship. It is
she who is selected to copy the letters
of the Department which are regarded
as if of the greatest consequence, such,
for example, as are to receive the attention
of the President, who frequently
compliments Mrs. Avery's admirable
penmanship.
No doubt her handwriting is neat
and elegant, because, when she was
learning the art, she took pains; and
no doubt other girls could do as well
by taking the same course.
Considering the advantage it is to
many girls to write a good hand, it is
strange that more of them do not try
to acquire this accomplishment. Of
late years our school girls and school
boys do a great more writing than they
did formerly. Much is done in school
now by way of dictation, and in many
schools the pupils have pencil or pen
in hand almost half the time.
But it would not be true to say that
the girls of to day write more legibly
and neatly than their mothers did. It
would be well if they paid far more
attention to this matter than they do.
But they should make a serious study
of it,?acquire the habit of taking the
best posture; learn to use the muscles
to advantage, so that they may not
easily become tired; and then practise,
as one who intends to become a profes?t/\no1
mnoinlon rvronfiqqcj
Diisijcu uiuoivmu uvviuvui
When a piece of writing gets worse
and worse, page after page, it is because
the writer did the work with only one
end of the muscular system of the arm,
instead of employing the whole of its
exquisite and harmonious machinery.
Mrs. Avery, it is said, writes as easily
as she does legibly. She writes as
well at the end of her day's work as at
the beginning, and her fingers never
ache.
That Disagreeable Thing.
It is always ea?y to do things that ,
. please us. See, for example, in what
a joyous mood a party of lads and las
sies will walk two miles or more to a (
pic-nic. Ask them to walk that dis- <
tance on a business errand, and they
complain of It as a hardship. The
reason of this difference lies not so
much in the walking as in the purpose
of it. The pic-nic they regard as a
pleasant thing; the errand as a disagreeable
duty. Hence they accepttbe walk
to the former as a lightsome task, but
when required to walk the same distance
on an errand they count it a bur- I
den, to get excused from which they j
grumble and make wry faces. This j
disposition to shirk thiDgs which do
not give one pleasure is always foolish
and sometimes wicked, because many
nf th? riutipR of life have to be done
simply because they are duties, and
not because they are in themselves
pleasant things to do. It is wise,
therefore, to follow the example of
Goethe's mother, who said, "I dispatch
at once whatever I have to do, the ?
most disagreeable always first." And |
after doing this she was able to say, !
"I defy any one to surpass me in good t
humor!" Thus she sought her pleas- J
ure, not in the agreeable, but in being t
dutiful. Her sense of duty done was a l
well-spring of cheerfulness in her J
mind. That he may drink from such t
a refreshing spring, every youth should i
resolve with the poet's mother to "al- 1
ways do the most disagreeable duties i
first." t
?
-? Debt.?"Borrowing," says old John <
Taylor, "is one of the most ordinary j
ways in which men sacrifice their future
to the present." Debt constantly j
; tempts to present ease and indulgence c
at the expense of future discomforts a
and deprivation. He who contracts a '
a debt, mortgages his future self. Pay- j
day steals rapidly along, and generally ?
brings no means of relief. The money \
earned before it is expended goes fur- (
ther and purchases far more enjoy- c
ment than money spent before it is
earned. He who builds or enlarges his
estates by the steady accretions of industry
and economy travels the ,
straight and narrow way of thrift; a
future of independence, substantial in i
its rewards, is directly before him.
He who improves or buys with promises
to pay, pledging his future labors
and gains, follows the broad and beaten
track whose end is dependence and
want. x
