Eitrnts from Christian Neighbor
Auaelatc Editor.
I feel i.t.'to be my duty to decline
being Associate Editor of the Messenger
of Peace after the close of this
year, and I make the announcement
now, no as to give the "Peace Association"
time to look up an editor in my
place. I am not losing my interest in
the blessed cause of Peace. My inter.
est is so deep that it is painful to me,
but I have not that natural ability and
depth and breadth of knowledge that
a man should have to fill worthily the
important place that I have held for
several yeare. The Friends have
many able and good men, and I hope
that one of them will take my place
next year. I am willing to be a common
contributor to the Messenger as
long as my Heavenly Father shall continue
my life, and give my power to
use my pen, but I do not want to hold
the important post of an editor. It is
a place of too much responsibility for
me, when Arbitration has become so
great a question in the view of mankind.
John Hemmenway.
Not having seen this announcement
before writing our notice last week of
the purpose of Brother Hemmenway
to decline being Associate Editor, we
can now only add that, in view of
what our dear brother says that he
feels It his duty to|do as he purposes,
that he is not losing his interest in the
blessed cause of Peace and that he is
willing to be a common contributor to
the Mkss&nger of Peace?we reluctantly
submit. We hope that Brothers
Hill and Hemmenway will excuse our
freedom of speech. We claim to have
audio hold a special interest in the
Messenger, in Bro. Hill and Bro. Hemmenway.
We love and admire John
Hemmenway because of the manifestation
of the life of Jesus in his devotion'
to the cause of peace. He says :
"My interest [in the cause of peace] is
so deep that it is painful to me." This
no one doubts.

Hie laws which govern in morals
are as invariable in results as those

much danger to moral purity in ungodly,
sinful and scornful associations
as there is danger to physical well

In Pennsylvania August 21 a flood
devastated a large section of country.
Railroads were inundated, land slides
blocked them, bridges were washed
away, houses flooded, store goods dam.
;; aged, teliegraph lines broken. In every
direction destruction showed its
work, and here and there death
claimed its victims. The winds in
parts of Maryland was cyclonic. New
England suffered also, much damage
being reported from Boston.
A Great Man Gone.
A dispatch from London, August 21,
announces the death of Henry Richard,
member of Parliament, and well
known throughout the civilized world
as an advocate of arbitration instead
of war for the settlement of disputes
between nations or governments. The
death of such a man is a calamity extending
in its influences beyond the
limits of a single nation.
Rev. W. Smith Martin has as editor
ceased his connection with tbe
Lowndesville Advertiser. A high and
independent moral tone has characterized
the editorials of Mr. Martin during
his occupaucy of the tripod. It
is hoped tbat the endeavor of Mr. Ba
ker "to keep up the'moral standard"
will be crowned with continued
success.

A fire at Durham, N. C., Sunday
night, August 19, destroyed twelve

house containing 300,000 pounds of

The Columbia Annual Conference
Convened at Pendleton, Oregon,
Aug. 2, 1888. All the members except
three were present. Bishop Chas. B.
Galloway opened the Conference and
delivered a brief address. The Conference
is held in the house of worship
belonging to the Methodist Episcopal
Church. The pastor of this
Church, Rev. J. C. Kirkman, has
treated us with marked kindness.
Two of us are guests at his house. He
and his most excellent Christian wife
make us feel very much at home and
we are frequently reminded how pleasant
it is for brethren to dwell together.
Brother Kirkman was introduced to
the conference and asked to take a
seat and feel at home in his own
house.?'Pacific Methodist.
i It has lately come to light that thousands
of immigrants are being sent to
this country from Italy and other part
of Southern Europe under contract,
by which ignorant persons are deluded
and a host of comparatively worthless
I people thrown upon our shores as pauper
laborers: Both the immigrant
and our people are thus being imposed
upon by a set of unprincipled sharpers.
Congress is at last engaged in investigating
the matter which ought to have
been attended to years ago. We are

' "Seek the good of other men," says
Lord Bacon, "but be not in bondage to
their fancies." Sometimes it is a positive
injury to another to respect his
prejudice. But, if you must cross
them, do so as gently as possible. He
who has learned how to combine gentleness
and firmness, has mastered one
of the greatnest lessons of life. He
has learned how to govern and to
read.
There can be no good without a
strong will. A weak will means inconstancy
; it means it even in good,
attempted and reliquished, which is always
a terrible thing, because it betrays
some one who relied upon it.
