The First Taugle.
Once in an Eastern palace wide
A little child sat weaving;
So patiently her task she piled.
Tbe men aud women at her side
Flocking round her, almost grieving,
"How Is it. little one," they said,
"You always work so cheerily ?
You never seem to break your thread,
Or snarl or tangle it, instead
Of working smooth and clearly.
"Our weaving gets so worn and soiled,
Our silk so frayed and broken;
For all we've fretted, wept and toiled,
We know the lovely pattern's spoiled
Before the king has spoken."
The little child looked in their eyes

That filled her own, as sometimes flies

She said, abashed and meekly;
"You know be said In everything?'"
"Why, so do we!" they cried : "we bring
Him all our troubles weekly."
She turned her little head aside;
A moment let them wrangle;
"Ah, but," she softly then replied,
"I go and get the knot untied
At the first little tangle !"

A Woman's Great Work.
It needed some courage for the Pilgrim
Fathers to set sail for America;
it needed hardly less for a lady to go
on board the Peruvian, on the 12th of
May, 1870, with one hundred boys rescued
from crime and misery in the
low681 haunts of London, to settle
them in a colony where she was a
complete stranger, and get for them
engagements in agricultural work,
for which they had had no training!
But it was not an insane venture,
plunged into without rhyme or reason.
The children had had a Christian
and moral training, a training in
the spirit of service, and it was known
that their rawness in agriculture
would be no obstacle to their engagement
by the farmers, who were keen
for assistance. Still it was a great venture.
But the work had been undertaken
for the Lord. The command
to "Get thee out of thy country, and
from thy kindred, and from thy fathers
house, unto a land which I shall
shew thee," had seemed to come from
Him; and she went forth, not knowing
whither she went. Her faith was
amply rewarded. At Quebec she
might have disposed of all her hun'
dred; she left eleven. At Montreal
the same: she left twenty-tnree ; at
Belleville eight; the rest at Toronto.
In June, 1870, it was the good fortune
of the present writer to meet Miss
Macphersou at the house of the late
Hon. George Brown, afterwards Prime
Minister of Canada. She had just
placed at his farm the last two boys of
the hundred, and very happy sne was
at the highly successful achievement
of her purpose. But Miss Macpherson
is not one of those who readily
learn to "rest and be thankful." The
Council of the county of Hastings
presented her with a house at Belleville
capable of containing two hundred,
and her friend and companion,
Miss Belbrough, undertook to furnish
and take charge of it as a home for

Meanwhile her brother-in-law, Mr.
Merry, brought out other seventy
boys, while Miss Macpherson hastened
home and before autumn was over
brought out another hundred. And
every year the same work has gone on,
and hundreds more emigrants have
been taken out. And very happy
have the results usually been. Only
two or three per cent, have turned
out good-for-noting; the overwhelming
majority are useful, and exemplary,
and often Christian citizens.
Had they remained as they were in
London, the proportion would most
likely have been the very oppositetwo
or three per cent, respectable, and
. the rest blackguards.
. When we sav that Miss Macpherson
has taken to Canada 4,600 destitute
children and placed them in situations
of comfort and promise, we
tell but a fraction of her work, for it
would never do to send to another
land the reclaimed waifs of East London
without training and preparation.
The Home of Industry to receive the
raw material; an English country

Home in Canada to take in the emigrants
on their arrival, and be a centre
of operations in the Colony?have all
to be maintained in a state of unflagging
activity and with that earnest,
but trustful and restful spirit which
says. "Except the Lord build the
house, they labor in vain that build
it." The various opperations connected
with the Home of Industry embrace
a widow's sewing class, mother's
meetings, factory girl's classes,
evening schools for young men and
boys, Gospel meetings and Bands of
Hope, lodging house visitation, and a
Bible flowermissiou. The sum needed
to carry it on, under the most economical
management, and with a vast
amount of volunteer labor, averages
?5,000 a year. The emigration ofeach
child costs about ?10. The condition
of the children in Canada often seems
almost too good to be true. The
writer can say this, not from hearsay,
but from personal observation. For

has the great happiness of having
led many others to engage in it.
He has been seen in a number of cases
children rescued from the worst surroundings
in Edinburgh, when placed
in Canada, clothed, civilized, bright
and happy, serving God benefiting
their fellow-men. The change has
often brought before his mind the
text, "Though ye have lien among
the pots, yet shall ye be as the wipgs
of a dove covered with silver and her
feathers with yellow gold."? The

Were we to have bad ami sunless
weather continuously, what a discontented
9et of mortals we should be!
How we grumble and complain ovei
a few days of rainy weather as though
sent on purpose to spite and annoy
us. How seldom can a single person
be found who is at all satisfied with
the weather? And yet in spite and
in iear or mi our uiswuicul, ^tumblings
and wai lings, storm and fine
weather continue to alternate, and
doubtless will until the end of time.
The truth is, we should not complain
about the weather at all, or very seldom,
and accept the bad and good
weather graciously. Were we to
have nothing but fine weather we
should tire of the very sunshine, and
beg for the darkness to come to us as
a relief from overmuch light and
splendor. The cultivation of a contented
spirit even amid storms and
darkness is of the first importance
to all. Habit is mighty, and if we
cultivate good habits of thought and
conversation we cannot help leading
pleasant and profitable lives. On the
other hand, falling into the habit of
complaining and grumbling over every
little mishap or unpleasantness of
life, is most disastrous to one's happiness
aud peace of mind. So, by cultivating
a pleasant and cheerful spirit
we can "make a sunshine in the shady
place," and in a measure bid a kind
of defiance to the lighter and annoying
ills of life, that are so irksome to
most of mankind. Is it not worth the
trial? As the New testament says
"I have learned, in whatsoever state
I am, therewith to be content."?

Until people can be taught that there
are one hundred cents in a dollar, and
that each cent has a specific value, and
that work is the law of living which
we can not shirk, the experience of the
philanthropic will be repeated that it
is impossible to effectively help by simply
giving.
