Keep
forever in view the momentous
value of life; aim at its worthiest
*us?, ita sublimest end; spurn with disdain
those foolish trifles and frivolous
vanities which so often consume life as
the locusts did Egypt; and devote
yourself, with the ardor of passion, to
attain the most divine improvements
of the human soul. In short, hold
yourself in preparation to make the
transition to another life whenever
you shall be claimed by the Lord of
the world.
A lie increases a man's peril, in
whatever danger he finds himself. So
long as a child of God speaks the truth,
he can leave the responsibility of his
truth-telling with God, but when he
departs from the truth, he becomes responsible
for all the consequences of
nis unauthorized course. His only
hope then is in the "father of lies",
ana the Devil is not to be trusted in an
emergency.
It is a strong count in the indictment
against Romanism as unspiritual
that family^ prayer should be (as the
Quarterly Keview, ior j&nuui^'i ca"|
presses it) "so nearly unknown
throughout the Boman Catholic
world." Can that be the true system
of faith which does not secure the result?home
worship to the God of the
home?
Another one of the absurdities of the
hygienic furor so prevalent a few years
ago Is about to be exploded. A writer
er in the American Magazine advocates
hot rolls, beefsteak or chops and
cofflw fer breakfast instead of oatmeal
and other such substances. If he
would be nearer right, but we shall
not quarrel about that.
He that hath never known adversity
is but half acquainted with others and
with himself. Constant success shows
us but one side of the world; for as it
surrounds us with friends who tell us
only of our merits, so it silences those
enemies from whom only we can learn
ourdefects.
Thou mast be trae thyself,
If thou the truth wonld teach;
Thy soul must overflow. If thou
Another's soul would reach.
It needs the overflow of heart
To give the lips full speech.
Be true.
The great temptation to which we
are more or less exposed is that of losing
*ight of God in the ordinary actions
of the day. It is bard to feel
that every action of every day is capable
of being so done as to advance or
hinder our growth in grace.
It is an excellent exchange to part
with outward comforts for inward
r? 1 m ofn n/\fhinar if

you gain patience; sickness with patience
is better than health, loss with
patience is better than gain.
Here is a sentence from Douglas Jerrold,
worth the attention of young
men who want to take a "short cut"
into the ministry: "Do not takedown
the shutters until you have something
to put in the windows."
Character in a preacher is the very
force in the bow that launches the arrow.
It is the latent heart behind the
words that gives them direction and
the projectile force.
To expect a young tree to produce
abundance of fruit, before the branches
are come forth, and spread with
strength to bear it, is not reasonable.
Of all earthly music, that which
forthonfr. intn heaven is the
music of a loving heart ?Beecher.
No man is free that is not master of
himself.
