Nearer Iiome.
One sweetly solemn thought
Coines to me o'er and o'er:
I'm nearer my home to-day
\ Than 1 ever have been before.
Nearer my Father's house.
* Where the many mansion# be:
Nearer the great whito throne.
Nearer the crystal sea.
? Nearer the bound of life
Where we lay our burdens down ;
Nearer leaving the cross,
Nearer gaining the crown !
.Hut that silent, unknown stream
Rolls dark before my sicbt.
Whose waves on the other side
Brcftk on a shore of light.
UIi: II LUJI II1UI IUI IWk
Have almost cainc?l tho brink.
If it be I am nearer homo
Even to-clay than I think.
Father, perfect my trust
Let my spirit feel, in 'teat!!,
That hor feet are firmly set
On the rock of a living faith.
Look,Out for the Nurse lilrl.
A young lawyer, taking a short cut
to dinner;one hot summer day. passed
through a disreputable street plentifully
supplied with groggeries and second-hand
clothing shops. In front of
one of the latter he saw a stylish perambulator,
well furnished with such
fleecy robes and embroideries as are
lavished upon the children whose fathers
can [or cannot] afford it. But
from the midst of the luxury came
wails of agony, which touched the
sympathetic heart of the lawyer, who
was a father of a few months' experience.
As he drew near to investigate,
what was his horror at beholding his
own child, whose beloved face, totally
unprotected from the sun, was red
with heat and ineffectual struggling.
The father adjusted the baby and the
baby's parasol, quieted its cries, and,
realizing that Nora Flannigan, the
nurse, must be near, he withdrew to
await her appearance. He waited fifteen
minutes. Then, with great anger
swelling his breast, he trundled his
first-born home, leaving Nora to endure
the shock of an apparently lost
charge as best she might. It is needless
to say that Nora resides no longer
under the roof of the young lawyer.
Another case: A "tired mother"
with her fifth child infeAfeted it to the
care of good-tempered, strong young
girl for daily fresh air. One day baby
and nurse were both taken sick with
similar symptoms. Nurse was sent to
her mother for care, because two sick
people were too many for that bughouse.
Iu a few days two well developed
cases of small-pox alarmed the
respective homes, .f ortunately me
end was not tragic, but there were
many weeks of quarantining?father
deprived of business, children of
school, all of society, besides the awful
anxiety and suspense consequent upon
the presence of the loathsome disease.
And this, with attendant expenses of
sickness to two families, because a
thoughtless girl called with her infant
charge next door to a case of varioloid.
If the columns of Babyhood were
not so full I could give the harrowing
details of a more serious case, where a
girl, left alone with a year old charge,
dropped it over'a balcony to the stone
walk below, crippling it for life.
From this cau^e to-day a little New
York boy, beautiful of face and bright
of mind, is at thirteen not larger than
ordinary children of seven, and carries
his poor, crooked form in an appliance
which probably ameliorates but can
never cure his misfortune.

If the object of man's supreme affections
is wealth ho rejoices in the
/ diligent use of the means which ho is
assured will lead to the accomplish-:
ment of this end. If God is the object
of man's supreme affections this
fact is exnressed in the diligent and
joyous use* of the means which he is
assured will lead hiin nearer to God.
Everybody needs and everybody
values kindness. "Everybody" includes
ourselves as well as others. But
our duty of being kind applies to ourselves
alone; it does uot include other
people's duty to be kind to us. Their
duty in this line is theirs alone. Hence
our thought of the value and the need
of kindness should center in our privilege
and duty oi being kind to others,
however others may bear themselves
toward us.
