The narkot.
The merchants of Abbeville have been doing
a line business during thy last week. The
sales have been Rood, ami the col lections have
been remarkably gratifying. The people!
seem anxious to discharge their obligations,)
and the merchants have been greatly encouraged.
The stores were never fuller of needed
goods in every line, and the prices, by common
consent, have been put down to the
lowest living figure, so that our friends from
the country have greater Inducement's to
come to town to trade than ever before, and,
as far as we are informed, all who have come
have been pleased with the goods and the
prices which have been asked for them.
Planters from far and near are hauling their
cotton to our gins, and are buying their bag-1
ging, selling cotton ami seed, to the best p<?.? |
sible advantage In prices and with tlie least
possible loss of time. Kaeli of the gins in J
town can pack about twenty bales a day. and i
each of the owners of the gins pay the highest
cash price for all seed from any cotton
which they tnav gin. This saves handling,
hauling, and waste of seed and loss of time.
As a matter of fact, in a majority of in
stances the planter who expects to sen nisi
seed will tluit li greatly to his advantage toj
carry his cotton and seed to market together, i
About.'J5 hales have boon ginned each day
nt AhbeVille, during the last. week.
The prices have been somewhat depressed
In conscquenceof a decline in foreign markets,
though Abbeville has persisted in paying
the highest prices in cash tor the staple. We
have two buyers in town whose sole business
Is to buy, and they make it interesting to the
sellers.
Since our last report 5>3 bales have been
shippied from this point, while some Ml
Dales remain on the platform of the depot
awaiting cars in which to take it oil'.
The great rush of cotton to market lias taxed
the railroad authorities to their fully capacity,
and it seems that the platforms of the
railroads are crowded in miny places.
Very little of our cotton is being shipped to
Charleston. Formerly nearly every b'ide
went to that city.

mcnrtation to Mercy-Scencs in the
Court House.
Okanokbvro. September 21.?In the Court
of General Sessions to-day, Judge Aldrich
presiding, tho hearing of the argument in tho
case of the state against Alex. C. Norton and
A. Richard Norton was resumed at 10 o'clock.
Very line arguments were made bv Mr.
Browning for the defence, and Solicitor Jer- i
vey for the.State. Judge Aldrich, although
severely indisposed, delived an elaborate
charge to the jury, which retired at 2 P. M.
Owing to the sickness of Judge Aldrich the
other cases on the docket were continued and
tho Jurors were discharged.
At half-past 1 o'clock the Jury returned into ,
Court and announced that they had agreed to
a verdict. At this time the Court room wa?
densely packed with people. Among the audience
were four brot her' of the elder Norton ;
and uncles of the young man, who have been
here the whole week. These gentlemen live
in different parts of Georgia, and are well-todo
business and professional men. Their gentlemanly
bearing here, together with the sad
mission which urui^a iiii-iu iu unci (imtt, u.m
won for them the sympathy and regard of the
entire community. While ilie Court was
waiting for the counsel and prisoners to come
in and receive tlie rerdiet much speculation
was indulged in as to what, the verdict would
be. The impression at I lie close of the case 1
had been that there would be a mistrial, but
the early agreement of the jury puzzled everyone
and pointed strongly to a verdict of
guilty. The clerk finally received the indictment
from thejury and slowly and distinctly
read out the verdict "Guilty, with a recommendation
to mercy."
The recommendation to mercy in a case
charging murder has no legal eit'ect, but may
have weight with tlie Governor upon a petition
for commuiation of sentence.
Judge Aldrich, after a very serious and impressive
lecture to the condemned men, sentenced
them to be hanged on Friday, December'J.
When the sentence was announced an
attempt to applaud was made by somo of the
audience, but it was quickly subdued by the
Sheriff and his deputies.
