I Have Wandered Far From TheoJ Mollior. I have wandered far from thee, motherFar fri>m our happy home; I have left the laml thai save me birth, In other climes to roam ; 4nrl time since tnen h;is rolled in years And marked them on my brow; Yet still I think of thee? * I'm thinking of thee now. 1 ain thi?kin?of the days, mother, W'licn, with such ournVst pride. You watched tin1 dawning of my youth And ciaspcd ine to your side. And memory tiring-; thy parting words. When tears fell on thy cheek? Rut the Inst tinxinus look I ota more than words can speak. 1 am far away from tlioe, mother, Xo friend is near me now To soothe with a gentle word, Nor cool my burning brow. The dearest l ies affection wove Are now all torn from inc; They left me when my sorrow came? They did not love like thee. I know thy tender heart, mother, Htill bents the same for me. As when I left thee, lone ago, To cross the dark blue sea. But still 1 love theejust the same: I long to hear thee speak, And feel again thy balmy breath Upon my care-worn check. ... . , u j Hnf, all! mere is a iiiouem, iuihiut, Pervades this beating hreRst. That thy freed spirit mny have flown To its eternal rest; And as I wipe the tear away, There whispers in my ear A voice that speaks of Heaven and thee, And bids me seek thee there. Nearness to God. Some one has said : "Never separate yourself from God. How sweet it is to live always near those who love us." But it is sweeter still to live near those whom we love, and the reason why men do not delight more in nearness to God is not because God does not love them, but because of their lack of love for him. Let the Christian meditate on the wonderful love of Christ, and the sacrifices made by him to save and bless lost, ruined sinners, until the fire burns in his heart and he can say in sincerity and truth, "The love of Christ co/istraineth us." Then will we find it indeed sweet to feel that we are near to God. Then can we sing, "Nearer, my God, to thee: Nearer to thee, K'en though it be a cross that niisetli me." Then, if perchance some sin committed by us has caused him to hide his face, like the Psalmist, we will soon lie found, crying out, "My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God." This of itself may be a real comfort to us, that a dangerous storm and great distress may happen to the best of men ; sucli things are no proof that we are deserted of God, or that he is displeased with us, Christ being in the ship did not prevent the storm. And this applies to many of our troubles and perplexities, especially such as occur to the Church, which is iudted that sacred vessel which contains Christ and his people, and Is almost always, as it were, in jeopardy, and covered with the waves. And Christ within her is often, as it were, asleep, trying our faith and waiting for our prayers.?Isaac Williams. A Happy Childhood. Yet this poverty was not pauperism ; there was nothing in it either miserable or abject; it was sweet, simple, contented, happy, even joyous. Mary like others of her rank, would spin, and cook food, and go to buv fruit, and evening by evening visit the fountain, still called after her 'the Virgin's fountain,' with her pitcher of earthenware carried on her shoulder or her head. Jesus would play and learn and help His parents in their daily tasks, and visit the synagogues on the Sabbath IU|/IV| j world, between those whom every-j body loves and those who lire love?l by j nobody, is in the place given by them i respectively to scff, in tlieir thoughts, in their words, and in tlieir actions, those persons who give the tirst place to themselves, in their intercourse with others, cannot well be t>leasiuj? to others. And those persons who. lovingly, give the (irst place to those whom they meet, cannot be generally disagreeable, whatever they say or do. Tf a person thinks of himself, thinks of what he can say of himself thinks of what the other is likely to think of him, thinks of the impression he will make on the other, is sure to stand in his own light, when he meets another. Hut if he thinks first of the other person, thinks of the other's good side, thinks of what he can say that will gratify the other, or that will help the other, and if he speaks and acts accordingly, he is sure to be a means of light and cheer to others.
