Hubbard, who died in Chicago on tin* I4th inst., at the age of 84. was the oldest Chicago settler. The first steamer came to Chicago in bringing Gen. Scott and troops lor the Clack Hawk war. Up to tlifit time the country north nnd west of Chi- j cago was almost a wilderness. I went from Chicago to Detroit on horseback without meeting a white person until reaching Yj>si-1 Janti, where there were a few log cabins. Iu j the summer of 1S33 I erected on the corner of South and I>a Salle streets, Chicago, the largest brick building then in the state. It was 1 (>0x150 feet and two stories high, and the j shrewd ones of that day thought I was crazy and called the building 'Hubbard's folly.' I was the tirst packer of beef and pork, opened the first store, was the first insurance agent and issued the tirst policy in Chicago."
