The Town Dog ns 'Possnm II mi tor.
Olie nigni lasi witk some inir young ?vn- |
tleinen went 'possum hunting. They took:
with them a choieo town dog, leading it by a
rope or string nntii they got well into t lie
woods or fields where the most 'possums were
thought to abound. At a sufficient distance
from town, and In the midst of the hunting
ground where toothsome 'possum was
thought to lie, the don was turned loose and
Kent out in the darkness on its mission, when i
it Immediately disappeared. !
Every ear was open, and every moment they !
dog. The hunters gave him an unascertained |
number of encouraging '"whoopees," but nevexpected
to hear encouraging notes from that ,
or a sound did they hear in reply. Afterwards
he was affectionately called loud and '
long. Still no answer. Finally tho conviction
was forced upon them that, their dog was
lost or had deserted them. They then re? j
turned home where the honest, dog was the
first to give them the most cordial welcome. 1
The Cn.se Against Ilnmlin. <
The oase of tin- State against A. It. Hamblln j
of tills county will be called at Anderson this i
weok. unless the Solicitor should consent to ,
not pros the indictment. The prosecutor. Xel- .
son, and a long petition from citizens of the
community have asked the Solicitor to nol
pros the Indictment agatnst Hamblln for (
riot, etc. The Solicitor says he will do so ou (
condition that Hamblin will plead guilty of f
carrying concealed weapons. It is thought J
that HHinblin will accept the condition, and 11
thus end the case. Nelson, the prosecutor,
will refuse to testify against Hamblin as to ?
the riot. The charge of currying concealed t
weapons can. no doubt, be proved by others, s
and lie will likely make no defeucc ou this c
charge. 5

Petitions, praying the County Commission- '
ers to order an election levying a three per
cent, tax, is being circulated among the real
estate owners ot Abbeville, and nearly every- J
body Is signlug It. If the people along the '
lino vote bonds to the road, and if the rights "
of way Is secured the road will bo built. 1
There can be no doubt about this. There is no
doubt about another fact. We need the road, i;
and it will do us good all the days of our a
lives. r
Lowndesville is wide awake on the railroad a
question. We learn that tlie people there are
making preparations to otFer &.V.O0O to net it _

Let ns Build Pasture Fences. ^
A pasture is of the first importance. If the ' ti
WHste lands of this county were fenced, wel
could raise enough mules, horses, cows and .
bogs to supply the home demand. There arej I
thousands of dollars worth of grass going to j J
waste. The hard times admonish lis to save I u
everything. If we have plenty of stock, wc I
will need to spend no money in that direc- w
lion, and we will need to spend nothing for U
fertilizers and guanos. Tlie stable, cow i U
" hou?e, and barn yard is the place to get our
fertilizers. On many farms the crass this U|
year was as valuable as the corn crop usually | x
Is, hut we fear that tons and tons of hay are si
foing to waste. We have uo spite at (Jeneral
laeood. but wo sincerely hope that our people
may not be compelled to buy his hay ,
