Bight of the spires of u small town on tho
margin of tho water. Inquiring of a Mexican
friend, ho saul: "That is ChaK-o, lying at
tho head of lake navigation, once a very
notable place. The town is now dead," or
dying, killed by the railroads. Ont o it. was
the point of shipment of the products of the
tierra ealieuto, and great quantities of rum,
sugar, grain and tropical fruits were transported
thenoo to Mexico, twenty-five miles
distant, in Hat-bottomed boats, profiled by
the Indians with long polos. Then- are some
reminders or' tho traf.ic yet, but a foreignci
would prolxibly find r.?oiv interest in t!ia
Indians, who live in a kind of house made of
l veils, and almost floating on tlie water."' -My
friend could not have suggested an excursion
more apropos to the mood of a person deeply
interested i:i tho iudigenous races ami their
customs. In two hours' time I had descended
from my crow's not on the hill to the lake
end was negotiating with the head man of
the town for a canoo and a couple of stout
Indians to take me to the pueblo of tho Lako
lhvoilers.
And hero a first surprise awaited inc. Tho
lake which I had seen glistening in the sun
from tho elevated post of observation nowhere
appeared when 1 arrived at its margin.
In its place was a vast expanse, extending for
miles, of reed::, swaying und drifting before
tho breeze. Herds of cattle waded and wallowed
in this sea of green, feeding 0:1 the
nutritious aquatic plants aim gr;isscs, aim
tin ir fine condition and sleek hides showed
that this amphibious life was not uncongenial
to them.
A narrow waterway loads from the town,
disapjiearing slowly among the iveds, and
upon this wo embarked ia the Indian's light
chalupe. As wo passed along this canal I
noticed that the water was clear and pure,
but the bottom composed of a spongy lied of
vegetable matter. In some places the Indians
Lad to get out and pull the canoe post the
long barges, laden with wood, on their way
to Mexico, and which entirely monopolized
the narrow channel. Their weight would
submerge what appeared to be, a moment Ihjfore,
firm ground. When the loaded barges
ttuckfasfc their swarthy conductors had the
habit of getting out and springing tip and
<1, nn tins vnwt.ihle mass. at tko noint of
adhesion, securing thus two or three feet of
water where none lied been before.
At times there would come to my ears
strange and mournful sounds from the encircling
reed meadows.
' Boatman! What sounds are those like tho
moaning of persons in distress?"
"Nothing, scuor! Only the chatting of
fishermen and the laughter of children."
Their statement turned out to be correct.
At intervals we caught glimpses through tho
tall reeds of intricate passageways, just largo
enough for the entry of a very small canoe.
In these canoes were women and children engaged
in fishing and the other iudustrics peculiar
to the lake. It was their conversation
and laughter, filtered through tho forest of
reeds, that produced the mournful sounds
before alluded to.
"Uut what kiud of fish do they catch.'"' wo
next asked.
"Mainly frogs, polywogs, worms and iu
sects, senor!" was his surprising reply.
It w:is difficult to believe juy ears, but suJw
Bequcnt investigation proved this to be tho
main industry of the Lake Dwellers, apart
from their peculiar agriculture, of which I
shall speak later on. Tht rearo three species
of frogs inhabiting the lake. They arc propared
for tho table, with suitable condiments,
and aiv sold extensively oven among the wellto-do
classes, being especially jxipular during
Lent as a substitute for animal food. Tlio
spawn of tho frog, and the little animals so
ridiculous and reiiu^iant to civilized tast?>,
popularly called jwllywogs, aro only useit
among the poor, and are served on leaves of
nioi'.o.
But the insect industry surpasses by far
the frog catching business. There is a sort
of water fly, called by the Indians axuvacatl,
which frequents tho lakes in prodigious
and which is peddled to-day through
tlio streets of Mexico with the shrill stru t
cry,'Tlies for Irlnl food." As tiie number
.of birds kept in private houses i> very large,
a single family often possessing twenty <-r
thirty, the tly trade i? correspondingly bri'.k.
The insect is about t'.ie size of a grain of rico,
has six legs, swiias on the water with great
force and rapidity, and though it b.is wings
lias never been known to uso tlicm. When
caught they are cither dried or knoaded into
a paste, cooked in water with sale, and eaten
with much relish by the natives. The eggs
amllarvajof this interesting creaturo havo
equal value. The Indians plant the stems of
reeds in the shallow parts of the lake, a!tout a
yard apart, so that the upper end shall project
above the surface. Tho female of tlio
axayacatl dojwsits her eggs upon those severed
layers deep, so that they not only cover tho
reed stalk, but also haug'in bunches from it.
At regular intervals they are collected, ?lri? ?l
on mats, and these form tho mark' table products
calkil ahuantle. This, ground and fried
in lard with tun's eggs, makes a dish very
much 1:!:" IKh mi l is much uvl win 11

is considered veiy nourishing.
As wo nrarcd tho littlo Indian village of
Yico, which was to by our point of d'.itination,
the boatmen became communicative,
complaining bitterly of a kind of l!<?.^tin^j
mass of reeds and grass, called voudok-ro:!.
Those floating banks have a thickness ranging
from half a yard to a yard and a hair',
and are eomi*tsod of the woven roots of
plants, living and dead, the remains of t ho
creatures that inhabit them, the mud of tho
lake bottom, and dust brought l?j* the wind.
{Solidly lenit together and of less density than
the water, they shift from point to point wnk
the winds and currents. It is dHlicult to account
for their formation; but nature works
with swh skill in their construction, a no:
giv^s thorn such solidity that, in times 01!
drought, the natives transport their cattle to
them for pasture, and the banks sustain tho
weight, only yielding an l sinking under foot
