There lias been ami is yet a groat ileal of discussion
going on about the negro. Somo say
he is a failure, ami some say not. I n our locality
there isasreat deal tisayabouteontrollinz
liiin as a laborer, and innumerable |il; ds
have been suggested.
Several clubs have selected writers to write
essays on the subject, so, my club, consisting
of myself, held a meeting and after mueh
consideration selected me to write an essay
on the subject, and as it was the unanimous
tlesire of tbe club to have me to do so, 1 have
concluded to accept the honor. So I thought
I would seat myself with pen in hand and
write you si few lines and get you to help me
out, for the Lord knows 1 need assistance
Itadly. I will state a few- of tbe dilliculties
that surround me and my enterprise of writing
tbe aforesaid essay.
In the lirst place, mj' ideas spring up and
flash around so la-t that I can't catch on to
them, and when I do got one expressed, no
body else can understand it. In fact, I can't

around my subject that?I am unable to circumference
is. I have been unable, so far, to
distinguish head, tail or foot of it. 1 can't
tell tiie outside from the inside of it, nor the
wrong side from tlie right side of it. Nor can
1 tell the popular from the unpopular sid<? of
It, and I would be very much embarrassed
nnd mortified if I should get Inside of the
wrong side of the popular Mde of it and offe
ul my audience which is tlio said club
consisting of myself as aforesaid.
Hero arc a few of the ideas I succeeded in
getting. Now, I want you to elucidate them
and dress them in their Sunday clothes for
me, so they will be fit to read before my said
club.
My first idea is, that it is the easiest matter
in the world to control the negro labor, if you
can control the money to pay him for his feed
wiillc lie serves you. If I had the money to
pay them and the provisions to feed them, 1
could control enough negro labor to level the
couuty, and dig a well for every two hundred
yards square in it, and build a brick house
with ten rooms in it for every while
man In the county, and build enough
frame houses for all the negroes in the
county. 1 could build enough churches,
sclioolhouscs, court houses, and jails for all
the people, without regard to race or previous

liow I can control the money and I will have
the whole thing in a nutshell and will give
you a lesson in controlling the negro that will
make it so easy that it will make your hcacl
Mvim. Just pay him, ami feed him, and you
have got him, and all yon have to do is to
liold your grip, and don't you forget it.
My second idea is, to set the negro a good
example, as all hands agree that he can heat
the deuce at imitating. Now. if I could only
control my audience, consisting of myself as
aforesaid, and get it to set the negro an example
of such day's work, and itt such prices,
as it desires, and to stick to it through heat
aud cold, from Monday morning till Sdturday
night. Now if I could inducc the said
audience to cease fishing, liuntimr, picnicing
and base balling, and stick to hard work on
little pay, poor rations, and to l>e easy of control,
while thus employed, (Jie negroes might
imitate, or in other words if a fellow might
Idrc himself to work for himself.at low wages,
and on short rations, and try his level best to
please himself. I verily believe by such an example
lie could and would control the negro
laborers. I need help right here.
Just about here in my es?ay 1 want to say a
few words about base ball. The white people
have learned the negroes how entertaining the
base ball is. ami the negroes follow us to a T,
aud good Lord how I hate to see negroes play
baseball, with a good crowd for spectators,
while the grass is getting away with our newground
corn.
My third idea is to impress the importance
on my audience of controlling his own family.

The labor question, if they were born tired
and inherited the disease. 1 know that no
one ever has, nor ever will, control those who
arc behind on sleep that was lost as far back
as the third and fourth generation. If they
inherited this evil from the .Sleeping Ueauty
it can never be cured.
There is another thing I would have them
broke from, and that is rending yellow back
pamphlets that tell how red headed SaJIie

.Snooks ami other love stories that would
make a mule's mule ancestor sick. They mix
this delightful reading and sleeping together
and the negroes are following their example,
ami what could look worse than a sleeping, or
reading negro, while the grass is growing in
the potato patch.
And then there are so many picnics and big
meetings to attend and cook for that it consumes
all their energies, and all of the club's
provisions, and then ride or drive all of the
club's old poor horses as long as they are able
to be propped up, to saddle or harness, ami
the negro follows their example, and no
tongue can tell how 1 hate to see a negro 011 a
poor old horse and his crop lost for want of
plowing and hoeing.
I have known the member of my club, to
spend two or three days in borrowing enough
money to control a negro for one day. when

my neighbors do the same tiling, and the negroes
follow their example, and lie can do it
to perfection, and the Lord only knows how I
hate to see one negro trying to borrow money
to hire another negro lo work for him. You
might help uie to advise my club 011 this subject.
There are some defects in the negroe's construction,
though I will only speak of one at
this sitting. He is so constructed that ho is
obliged to eat, and provisions are scarec and
hard to get about this club's head quarters. I
have known a few individuals to attempt to
get a negro to work on warm water thickened
with wlggletails, but it. was a failure, no pay.
no rations and no work, and don't you forget
it. If John Wesley llykard e<>uld invent a
negro of that sort, or even one that could live
on swamp mud it would pay better than his
cotton chopper, car coupler, and sun-year clock
combined, and then if Dr. Hon Wilson could
(and 1 expect lie could if lie would) invent a
jnule 011 the same order, and learn my club to
control them, we would make him big boss,
and bottle washer of the community.
My club held a meeting one Saturday to
elect a delegate to write the aforesaid essay,
and to discuss the feasibility of governing the
negro by certificate. H is a very nico plan,
but somehow wo have been unable to get the
negro to see it in that light. He is to feed and
clothe himself and he controiieu, anu wiien
lie ge)s through with the job wo nro to give
1dm a certificate and send him to the next
neighbor in the grass, who is to do likewise.

the next Saturday night the negroes in. imitation

Now I believe the best thing we could do
would be to go to work ourselves, men, women
and children, and stick to it., and even if

I believe we would have less trouble in
controlling the negro and less necessity of

myself, and to get control of myself,
something must he done, and that quickly or
we are done for. If some plan is not immediately
adopted to give relief we will either have
to work, steal or travel. May the good Lord
