MEXICAN ANTIQUITIES.
THE COLLECTION RECENTLY PLACED '
IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM.
Abadlano's Casta of the More Valuable
I
Monuments of Aztec Civilization?Tho i
Career of the Collector?Tho Gelatine j
Process of Obtaining Casts.
Ono of the most recent collections tbat j
havo been placed in tho museum is the j
Abadiano collection of Mexican antiquities, j
It consists of casts of the larger and more :
valuable monuments of tho Aztec civiliza- j
tion and is without doubt the most valuable, !
though not tho largest collection that has
yot Leon made. It does not belong to the j
Institution, as Las been incorroctly stated, j
but is only placed there by the owner in tho i
hope that some public-spirited citizen will I
purchase and present it to tho museum.
The writer recently visited the museum j
with a gentleman who accompanied ;
Abadiano in his journey to tho ruins and as- i
sisted in taking the casts, Many interesting
facts were learned of the struggles of tho
young antiquarian to advance tho study of j
tho history of his native land and of the life '
of its strange inhabitants when conquered ,
by Cortoz. Tho casts are splendid specimens j
of art, and bring out the characters en- |
graved on the original stono beautifully, j
Their value can hardly be ovor-estimated, j
for if anything more is evor to be learned of j
iho Aztecs it will have to come through 1
these seemingly voiceless monuments. Tho
collection of manuscript words woro nearly
all of them destroyed by the zealous priosts ]
who accompanied the Spanish invader, [
and thus the thread broken that ;
bound that nation to the history j
of the world. Many of tho monu- ;
znents were also destroyed, and some of tho
casts in tho museum show the marks of j
axes handled by tho hands of the -100 years
ago. The monuments are the mouthpieces j
of tho past, but their tongue is numbered j
with the dead languages and they can not
talk. But it is possible that tho key to tho
hieroglyphics on their faces may yet be dis- !
covered and thus a new link added to the
chain of history. There is already quito a
respectable collection of Mexican antiquities
in the museum, and it would be a grand I
work to make casts of them all and gather j
them in one place so that men of science |
could study them, and in time come upon !
tho real theory of their meaning. This was j
the idea of Abadiano. but ho did not receive
the encouragemeat ho merited. Ho spent j
his fortune and h&s nover received any- j
thing in return for it,
REVOLUTIONIST AND ANTIQUARIAN.
The career of Abadiuno and tho way in j
which he came to make the collection is an
Interesting ODe and is curiously identified i
with the history of Mexico under Diaz, j
The dashing revolutionist and tho young
antiquarian were strangely enough iuti- J
mate friends, and Abadiano was an oilicer J
in Diaz' army when ho was striving to ;
wrest the government from Lerdo?the
rightful president They fought and slept
and ate together and when they had sue- |
ceeded and Diaz proclaimed ruler, tho anti- :1
quarian retired from the army and returned j
to his home in the City of Mexico. Here j
his family had for over 20U years con- i
ducted a large book storo and he, in part- j
nership with his brother, now took charge ! i
of it. But his antiquarian tastes and his
service in the army had unfitted him for !
business and he soon withdrew from tho '1
firm.
Diaz had promised him an appointment
if the revolution succeeded and ho now askod |
for it, but the ollice oll'erod him was so
much lower than ho thought he had a right
to expect that he would not accept it He :
then suggested that he make the casts that
have just been placed on the National mu- I
eeum and Diaz agreed to got tbe govern- i
ment to buy them to send to the Now Or- j
leans exposition, xnis was cne very ming t
that suited the nature of young Abadiano I
and be put bis whole soul into tbe work.
He determined to make the caste by the '
most approved method and make them a !
model of their kind.
One can easily distinguish the difference
between the work of Abadiano ani that of j
Desire Chamay who made the much written !;
of collection presented to the museum of
Mr. Lorillard of New York. In the former 1:
you will notice that every little crack and !
crevice, even the grain of the stono, is j!
brought out with the greatest distinctness.
DETAILS OF THE UELATINE l'HOCESis
This was done by what is known as tho j
gelatine process and it is very expensive, J
especially in a country like Mexico where '
the material is scarce and has to be bought
in small quantities at the drug stores. The J <
Btone of which a oast was to be taken i
Lad to be securely boxed, ana ttio not gelatine
poured into the vacant space between '
the box and the stone. You can imagine j
the difficulty of making a cast when you I
think of a stone weighing twenty-one tons |
imbedded in the walls of a church, perhaps
sixty feet from the ground, as was the cal- |
endar stono. A scati'oM had to be built, j
the huge stone nicely divided and the cast
made pieco by piece.
The method used in making the Lorillard
collection is a very simple one, and tho
most unlearned oye can see that it is very '
inferior to that of Abadiano. A pieco of !
common brown paper was dampened, laid
over tbe stone and hammered until an im- j
predion of the characters were made, 'i bis j
was continued until the layer of paper was
perhaps a quarter of an inch thick. Then
it was left to dry and tho ca>t made in
plaster of paris. Charnav mado many failures,
and his collection i onsists altogether
of flat surfaces, while that of Abadiano includes
specimens of every shape.
Abadiano's work was nearly completed
when a tide of ill fortune suddenly overtook j
him. After ho had made two casts and de- !
stroyed his gelatine plates tho Mexican gov- i
ernment decided that the expense would be \
too great and declined buying it This was !
a terrible blow, but tbe young antiquariau j
AnU, t- Tina l,n /li.l
and carrying out tho original plans of tho j
Mexican government he carried it overland !
to New Orleans at great expenso, paying '
the customs oilicer nearly ?1,WJ duty. Un
arriving at tho exposition lio did not place j
Lis collection in tho building, for that j
would bring him in no rovenuo, but rented j
-n largo storehouse in the French <|uarter, j
on? of the most sparsely settled districts of [
tbo city, and there set it up. 80 slow did j
the careful antiquarian work that by tbo ;
time be was ready to exhibit the exposition 1
was nearly over and many of tbo visitors j
had left the city. Abaliano was now j
placed in a serious predicament. He bad |
spent bis fortune on tbe collection and it
was now useless to him, and he know not 1
what to do with it
At this juncture of affairs Prof. Mason, 1
of the Smithsonian museum, appeared on
the scene and jtl'ected a temporary arrangement,
by which tbo exhibit was placed in
that institution. But it is to be hoped that
in tlm tfiitnra it will nnrriinvi'fl nud
thus given a permanent pluco in the
museum?Washington Cor. Detroit Fre? |
