If it were true, as is often asserted by j
some, that the rearing of children is the
merest matter of accident and that our boys 1
and our girls may go hack a century or i
two and pick up the vices of some ancestor, ;
then it would be indeed better that the gen- j
eration be wiped away. Fortunately we
know that home training and early influ-1
ences havo vast weight in determining the
future of all young persons. It seems highly I
improbablo that the child ?f virtuous iutel- |
ligent parentage, after boing subjected to j
proper training, should turn out a murderer ;
or a thiof on reaching manhood. We do
not look to underlying causes. Too indul- [
gent parentage or too strict discipline is '
equally pernicious. It is impossible not to
believe that our children are plastic clay,
and that what we mold them they will become.
If a boy is allowed in early youth
to consider that ho has certain physical
privileges which make him a sort of miniature
god, his mistaken parents must expect
to reap the result of their fallacies.
A young man, employed by au influen- |
tial firm, is found missing and his accounts i
in confusion. His friends, who likei him i
for his pleasant manners and general liberality,
are shocked when thoy find bis ao ;

the trust of bis employers. They shrink
from thinking of him as a criminal, and
jet they knew that his habits were not in

living and toils with her hands could be impressed
that finger rings were only suitable
when labor of this sort was not necessary;
if she could be indu el to believe that overdress
in her case was not only improper,
but a stamp of her station, we should have
fewer fallen women; they are recruited

The Uso of Tobacco In France.
The first time that I can find mention
made in French literature of tobacco-smoking
is in a letter of Mme. de Alaintenon, in ::
which she says the dauphiness, after the I
excitement and fatigue of appearing in a
gala dress to receive the plenipotentiaries !
sent by Queen Anne to negotiate terms of j
peace, snuil'ed and smoked tobacco, and |
found herself better for doing so. In Louis J
Philippe's reign snuff was out anl smoking ;
was not yet in. Not a singla famous mem- '
ber of the generation of Frenchmen to
which M. Thiors belonged either snuil'ed or
smoked. The famous cliemist of tho Uobe- j
lins factory, M. Chevruel, who will bo 100
years old next August, says that it always
sickened him to go into a room that smelled
of tobacco, but he has also an aversion to !
wine, and to fish, which he hardly ever ato j
in the course of his long life.
The general use and abuse of the cigar j
and cigarette were products of the empire. !
The Emperor Napoleou III was as fond of j
tobacco as any Dutchman, but the number j
of cigarettes ho duily smoked was perhaps
not so much the cause of his rapid physi- |
cal and mental decadence in the latter part I
of his reign as his deep indulgence in other I
pleasures. He and his finance minister, M. j
Fould, wore directly responsible for the
spread of tobacco-smoking, even to the remotest
village, by supplying a cheap, strong
kind of tobacco to all the military canteens.
The soldiers who learned to smoke it when
in the army continued to do so when they
retired. Iho tobacco supplied to the troops
is cut in August, wlion tho narcotic quality
is most developod, and nothing is done in
the manufacture to weaken it. This is retailed
for a little more than a half-penny an

Gen. rhil Sheridan Doesn't Play.
"I discovered recently what is to mo a
very surprising thing about Gen. ffheridan."
said ex Congressman Amos Townsend of
Cleveland, who has been iu "Washington for
some days. "That i3, ho doesn't play poker.
Now poker is played by evory one in tho
army, and tho better the ollicer tho better
poker player he is as a rule. Gen. Grant
was a great poker player, an.l he loved to
play the gima So I was considerably surprised
when I learned that Phil Sheridan
didn't play, and 1 asked him about it Ho ;
said he didn't care for the game. When be j
waa in the west the officers used to come to
bis headquarters a great deal and indulge in
a quiet game. He would entertain them, |
but would never join them at the card table.
We have a fishing club with headquarters j
on a little group of islands off Sandusky, of
which Gen. Sheridan was a member. "VVe
go there every year to fish and have a good
time generally, but we can never get Sher- |
idan to take a hand at poker.?Washington ;

The Cost of a Special Car.
There are not so many special cars goin? I
over the roads this year as there were last
year. The cost of a special Pullman car ia j
$o0 a day to the Pullman company for the
car and two servants, and the price of
twelve tickets to tho railroad company that
hauls it This is to say, if the fare to a certain
place is ?10 the company charges $1^0
for hau'ing the car, no matter how many
people it contains. It is a very pleasant j
way to travel for those who can afford it? '
