QUEER LORENZO DOW.
SCRAPS FROM THE DIARY OF THE
ITINERANT REVIVALIST.
Peculiar Xetliods Which He Employed
in His Career as a Traveling I'reachor
?His Marriage to Pcsgy?Couciuding
Entries in His Diary.
Such a mass of exaggerated ami insignificant
anecdotes liavo been told of tuis j^rer.t
and eccentric missionary revivalist that it
is hard to imagine or discover him just as
he was. Yet there are safe sources through
whi*h a picture of him may he obtained.
That he was no humbug every point in his
life and character goes to show, lie was
earnest to the very verge of fanaticism. I
The atmosphere in which he was raised was
one of extreme religious fervor, and ho
showed signs of its eUect from his earliest
years.
One evening when he had a houseful of
young men he plaoed his baclc against tho
door so none of tliam could escape, and
preached to them with such fervor that
some cried aloud for mercy. A young
woman with whom he was talking suddenly
broke away from him and ran. Ho fol- i
lowed her to tho house of a neighbor, and
sitting down in a door, would not let her
- out untii she had chosen to servo either I od |
or Satan for a ! or might yho chos> the :
jattcr, saying I can't keep tho ether." j
Loren/.o solemnly called oa Uotl to witness, j
and added: "I'll pray (JoJ that you may I
be taken sick before tho fortnight's up."' |
Uefore night she grow uueasy, soon bro.<e ]
nor pronnso, ana De.ame a convert ana a
member of the church.
OFFENDED ItV I'LAIN* PREACHING.
A mail whomlie had o.Tende.l Ly plain
preaching camu into church and trio I to
pull his nose. \ Dow dodged, whereupon the i
women arose en masse an J jut the intruder '
out of doors. In his diary Lorenzo sets
down man}' incidents which show I Liu pecu- '
liar bent of his mind and the tenor of his :
LoiieL In illustration: ."A reprobation j
preacher sought to do us harm, when I publicly
besought Go I, if be was a true minister
to bless his labors and make it manifest; but
if he had jumi>ed presumptuously into the i
work that God would remove hiin, so that j
ho should not hurt the people. Shortly j
after he fell into a scandalous sin, and so,
iiis influence was lost. * * * As I en- !
tered the meeting-house, having an old Lor- !
rowed greatcoat on and two hats, the pco- j
pie were alarmed, and thought it singular j
that 1 did not bow to every paw as 1 went |
toward the pulpit, which was tao custom
there. My hat being taken from me with- '
out my consent, and two others forced upon j
me, I was carrying one to give a young :
man. I besought Go! in public that some- ,
thing awful might happen in the neighbor- j
hood, if nothing elso would do to alarm the j
people. A company of young people going |
to a tavern one of them said, ' 1 will lido
thero as Christ rode into Jerusalem. ' Instantly
his horse started, and throw hirn J
against a log. Ho spoke no moro until he j
died, which was next morning."
Lorenzo had determined to marry no
woman who would objeet to his traveling, I
and when ho came to his courtship it was
pursued after his own peculiar plan. One '
is. M., of Western, kept a houso lor preach- :
ers, or "Methodist tavern" as it was called
by the people. When Dow preached in that j
neighborhood M. asked him to como to his ;
house, and added "ivly daughter will be glad i
10 see yoj.*' Lorenzo remained there ail j
night, but not a word passed between him
and 1'eggy, who was an adopted child. lie
went to his appointment, and while he was
ureachinsr ho foit "an uncommon exercise"
to run through his mini He pondered on
it, and before evening he askod JL if he
would object to Lorenzo's talking w ith the
girl about matrimony. Tho reply was, "I {
have nothing to say only 1 have requested
her, if she has any regard for me, not to 1
inarry so as to leave my house."
HIS MARRIAGE TO 1'SUGY.
On rea'hing tho bouse Low abruptly ;
asked the wife what they had been doing
in his absence, bhe told him, anil added ;
that foggy was resolved that she would !
never marry, except to a preacher, and that
he must keep on traveling. Just then lJeggy i
came into tho room. Loren o repeated this j
remark, and asked her if she had made it. j
She answered in the affirmative, whereupon .
Lorenzo said: "Ho you think y^u could ac- j
c?nt of such an oblect as me:" She made
no answer, but retired from the room. Ho |
went away, but returned m a few days, !
when he told her ha would be back again j
"in a year and a half or so," and receive
her answer! After he had been south some
? time the family removed to that section,
aau he was quietly mar; iei to iVggy in tho
fall of 1SOJ.
During the closing months of that year
and the early ones of lSJo, ho crossed Ohio ;
and went into the Mississippi valley, preach- '
ing at l^ittaburg, Steubenviile, and Wheeling
on the way. He ma.Kes this entry: 4,l have
been in each of the soventeen states of the
union." Of Chillicothe, then the capital of
Ohio, he writes: ''Stayed with the gov- |
ernor two days. >"o slavery can be intro- j
tluced here. There aro lands laid o:i' for ,
scuoois in greuu majjimuui-. uurc uo kibv*sled
all night, until Ji) o'clock on the follow- !
ing morning, stopped at a place called '
Bethel, finished his sermon, stopped from bis
vulpit to an open window, jumped out, j
mounted his horse, rode seventeen miles,
making nearly eighty mile- of travel ami ,
live meetings without sleep.
The concluding entries in his dairy aro a^
follows: "In a few weeks I expect to start i
tor the west again, but where I may bo this I
time twelvemonth is very uncertain to me; j
whother in England, Sierra Leone, in .\f- 1
rica; West Indies, or how England, oretor- j

not over, nor will it be until the divine government
bo reverentially acknowledged by I
the human family." His troubled and re- '
