PAINTING A WAR PICTURE.
Collecting tho Material for a "Panorama"?Col.

"In painting a war picture the artist must
first select a battle of national interest and
with a certain dramatic value of its own.
Now comes tho almost endless task of collecting
tho material- Tho soldiers who take
part in a great engagement often represent
almost every locality in the country. All
the sources must be consulted. One can't
atlord to be mistaken in a single instance.
It would be detec ted the very first time an
old soldier who was in the light visited the
picture.
"But to make you understand i wm 1011
you how I collected tlie material for the
Siego of Vicksburg, that Mr. Morgan is now
finishing. First I obtair.el access to the
war department at Washington, I). C., and
collected every photograph and sketch pertaining
to the fight. I also obtained copies
of the roll call of all the Federals engaged
in the battle. To oS,U(K) of these men I
sent circular letters requesting them to send
me their full name, ago, weight, height, and
a photograph. Thousands o( thesj letters
have been answered. It they were all collected
and printed in book form I honestly
believe it would be the most interesting and
most unique contribution to the history of
the rebellion extant
"A few days ago I wrote to Col. Fred
Grant asking him to send mo a photograph
of himself at the age when he was at the
battle of Vicksburg with his father. Yosteriiay
his wife answered the letter, sonding
bis picture, representing a lad oj l.'i. She
writes: 'Dear General: Inclosed find a photograph
of CoL Fred Grant at the age when
-lie was at the battle of Vicksburg with his
lather, Gen. Grant It is the only one we
have of him while at that age, and, as his
mother prizes it very much, will you
kindly return it when your great picture is
finished?'

They wrote me a letter stating that they
were all engaged in the battle of Vicksburg,
all were from the same neighborhood, all
knew each other, and all lost their left log.

anesthetics are employed, but without them

stakes driven in the ground, and after two
or three futild attempts to chloroform it,
they went to work without To provont the
suffering brute from making a noise, and

appalling sounds on earth, they cut the
vocal cords. All it could do after that was
to make a hissing sound, like wind escaping
from an air pump. They penetrated the
cavities, sawed the living bone, and even
lifted out 6ome of the organs. One of those
who was present at the operation told me he
thought the horse would never die, and that

I was talking the other day at the Palmer
house with a bright, energetic young man
lrom a town not more than a hundred miles
from Chicago. He told me in substance:
' My town is a most discouraging place for a
young man of push and energy. Tho business
and wealth of tho town are in the
hands of a lot of residents who are able to
live handsomely from their rents and interest,
and who don't care whether the place
grows any or not. In fact, some of them
would rather see it remain just as it is, for
they have becomo so attached to the old
landmarks that they do not like to see them
disturbed. No encouragement is given to
any new enterprise that may bo started. On
the contrary, if it has any tendency to interfere
with the business of the old merchants,
they band together to crush tbe
new-comer out "While other towns around
it, with no better natural advantages, are
pushing right ahead, ours is as dead as a
