GENERAL HEALTH. * j The Disease More Often Attacks the Poor than the Rich, the Private Ofteuer than the Officer, the Sol-1 dier Oftener than the Civilian?A Variety of Opinions by Various Eminent Physicians. Which the People Would do Well to Itead. The prevalence of pneumonia, its rapid increase, and fatal consequences in many instances, have led a number ol our abler physicians to carefully investigate the peculiarities of this alarming disease, and some of them have published the result of their observations in a way to benefit the public, not on- , Jy by pointing out the best methods of pre-' vention, nut uisewise 01 treatment, m mc event of its occurrence. Dr. John T. Nagle, Deputy Register of Records of the Health Hoard of the city of NewYork, has given much attention to the disease. and lias prepared valuable statistical tables concerning it. "The prevalence of pneumonia," he says, | "may be owing to a lack of ozone air, or it may be because there Is too mtuli ozone. Slid-1 den changes of weather and high winds, par- j ticularly from the north and east, certainly have much to do with it, and draughts of all | kinds arc bad, and should be avoided. Smoking may be a predisposing cause, ;is tobacco) is certainly irritant. Anything which irritaies the lungs should be avoided. If people would breathe through the nose instead of through the mouth, especially when in the) open air or lacing a cold wind, the lungs i would be less irritated. "One great cause of the fearful death rate among children from this disease is undoubtedly the criminally loolish way in which they I are*dressed. Many mothers seem more anxious to make their children look pretty than to dress them comfortably. On a par w ith | this is the folly of low-necked dresses among women as viewed from a health standpoint. Ladies so dres: ed will rush from a heated ballroom or theater into the open air, and wonder that they have colds or pneumonia. "Wear seasonable underclothing, and don't remove your heavy flannels too early in the spring or defer putting them 011 until too lato in tne fall. I should not advise people to coddle themselves, but one should dress according to theseason, and should cover the body evenly. Add to this a proper regard for the general health ana avoidance of draughts, and one need not worry much about pneumonia." Prof. A. L. Loomls, in his "Practice of Medicine," says : It is a well-known (net that the disease attacks the poor oftener than the rich, the private oftener than theolBcer. the sailor on shore oftener than onshio, the soldier oftener than the civilian at the same post. It is unknown in the polar regions and common on the Mediterranean, increasing in a direct ratio frotn the poles to the equator. Elevation above sea predisposes it; north and east! t winds favor its development; rainy seasons or'damp and marshy districts do not seem to influence it. Periods of steady and extreme cold have little effect except upon the old but sudden changes are very disastrous. The first predisposing cause is use. the disease* | being roost common m early ebildhoo 1. trom t wenty to forty, and after sixty. The propor-1 tlon of male and female victims is three to \ one. Any general condition of the body j which debilitates isa predisposing cause. The complications which render the disease so dangerous are those which diminish the nerve supply or weaken the muscular power of the ( heart. Bad sewerage and miasmatic inilu- j enceare potent causes of the disense." Pneumonia usually begins with a chill, in- f tense and prolonged, generally at night, and followed by a correspondingly high fever and j sharp pains in the sides. The disease is very rapid in its progress, reaching a crisis in from live to six days, and sometimes causing death within three days. Usually but one is affected, and often the disease is confined to a single lobe. A person may have "double pneumonia," or fmeurnoniaof both lungs, and recover from t, but thechancesareagainsthim. When the disease spreads to all of the lung lobe< death is certain, as the patient cannot .breathe, and dies of suffocation. The diseased lung, at first inflamed, soon becomes hard and leathery, and incapable of performing its natural functions. A curious ihet is that usually no second chill occurs when another lobe is attacked, and there appears to be no relation between the amount of lung affected and the intensity of the symptoms. All physicians agree in saying that the disease is not contagious, but may be epidemic, and it has been noticed that it is developed under t lie same! conditions as diptheria?that is, the conditions which produce diptheria in tue young! are apt to cause pneumonia among adults. j Dr. J, R. In that pamphlet Dr. Learning holds > to the theory that tire pneumonia of the pres-1 entday, or plnro-pneumonin, as he calls it. is ; the same as the epidemic which caused such ; havoc amons the troops in Canada during the I war of 1X12-15. That the weat her has much to do with pneumonia is apparant. The number of deat hs in New York city for the first seven months oi'j last year was as follows : January, 375; Feb-j ruary, 480; March, 587; April, 512; May, :*>7; June, 229; July, 150. Af'.er August there is ; usually a steady Increase until March, the most tatal month of the year. The death rate, too, is very high. The statistics so far published, both in hospitals and private practice, show an average death rate of at least' 20 per cent., or one in ttvoof those attacked The theories concerning the nature of the! disease itself are many and varied. Some J physicians hold that pneumonia is only a lo- \ Cal manifestation of a general diease, others) that it is a specific disease caused by a specific : poison, while still others nold as tenaciously to the germ theory. Without speculating upon these different j jtneories, from what has been said in which ! all agree, it is plain that anything which low- j ?ers the vitality of the system is conducive to' the disease, and should be carefully avoided. ; Overwork, either physical or mental, has much to do with it, and thi? explains why so ! many business men and brain workers he- j eome its victims. A professor of medicine has declared that j honey disturbs the formation of fungoid growths, and has therefore, been of great use' as a preventive of thrash in babies, it is also i claimed that an ointment made of honey and i flour is an excellent remedy for boils. Every family should have a small quantity of pure honey in the house to use in case of a sudden cold. Qualify Breeding iit Horses. It is contended by the Farm and Garden that tlie farm horse Ik almost invariably just, what the farmer makes him, and as the general disposition and capacity ot' the horse depends very much on his breeding and training, greater care should be bestowed upon the matter of raising young colts than upon any other class of ot young animals. Everything depends upon the disposition. Xo matter how well bred a horse may be, if it is too nervous, balks, kicks, cribs, oris vicious, its value is lessened, and its usefulness impaired. While many o.' the vices arc acq wired,.yet others are inherited, and hence something else must be considered in breeding horses than size, speed | and endurance.
