Another Chapter.
We present this week the preliminary skirmishes
that hfive taken place before the rehearsal
of the trial of Ferguson should begin.
The various matters therein contained will
no doubt be of some interest to the public.
At any rate we have thought them to be of
sufficient inierest to putourself to much trouble
and to some expense to produce them.

present we are rather inclined to the opinion
thnt it would be useless to reprint the testi-j
mony, or to publish the speeches. We take j
it for granted that every reader of the Press J

the guilt or innoccnce of the accused.

Judge Witlierspoon.
We presume it would not be amiss in the
Press amd Banner to utter its admiration for
Judse Wi.herspoon's conscientious and iin-j
partial discharge of his delicate duties in the {
Court* He is remarkably patient, and seeks j
to hold the scales of Justice in exact equi-|
poise. He Is an upright man and a conscien-1
tious Judge whose devotion to the rignt willj
jilways command the respect of those wfco
come in contact with him. Hcls the young- j
est Judge on the Bench in South Carolina, !
but there are none who are more careful or :
more determined to administer justice with'
San impartial hand than Judge Witherspoon.!
Conscientious and worthy officers give the
people cause for congratulation.

Application for Mnndamns.
On Monday night application was made 1o
Juds:e Witherspoon at chambers for a man'damus
against the town council of Pendleton, '
to require them to issue liquor license to H. CJ
Summers. Mr. Scuddno represented the applicant,
and Messrs. Moore A: Simpson, of Anderson,
resisted th<* application.

liis application, he having since his first ap- 1
plication, complied with the requirement of
the law in such cases.
The application contends that under the lo'eal
option law, Pendleton having voted "License,"
the council cannot limit the number
*0f saloons, and that, when he pays the county
license, presents the bond and certificate
signed by six t>ix payers, and pay;' the town
license, that they have no discretion left in
premises but to issue him the proper author'ity
to sell spirituous liquors.

personal property of Mr. Cunningham, and
unanimously passed a resolution directing
the assignee to return that part of the assigned
property to him. This was a generous act,

ery ccnt's worth of his property, including his
bed room furniture, but which latter ttie cred1
tors would not take. Creditors have souls, after
all.

after spending several days at the Central
Hotel in this city returned yesterday to their
home. Mr. J. W. Scott, who is engaged in

Friday morning, when the store was opened
land the goods offered for sale at cost. We

i been a rush similar to this at any store. It
seems that people were waiting for a favoraible
opportunity to buy goods.

The Abbeville "Wholesale Store is receiving
from their Western houses larsre shipments of
corn, meat, meal and flour. They receiveseveral
cars weekly, with instructions to continue
to sell at Western prices, freight added.
This house does r mamoth business and is
certainly a great blessing to the trade of Abbeville

Mr. Taylor, traveling agent of the ATetbs
ami Courier, was in town last week. He represent*
one of the best newspapers in the South,
many copies of which are taken by our people.
He was abo selling that most readable
book?-'Our Women in the War"?which was
published by the News and Courier.
Squire Keller, a lite-long friend of the
Press and Banner, was in town a few days ago.
Mr. Parker says he Is a model trial Justice.
He usually settles ill matters to tiie entire
satisfaction of both sides of ciists that cdme

W. C. Benet, Esq., Secretary of the State

Cooley, of Michigan, accepting the invitation

Ma. John Robertson, an aged citizen of
this County, died at the homo of his sOri-inlaw,
Mr. T. C. Seal, last Saturday week, after a
lingering illness. He was burried at Ujiper
Long Cane.
The new Methodist preacher is much
liked by this community, who have every
respect, tor his christian character, and adm'ire
his zeal in the good work in which he 5s

United Stutes Court at Greenville, has returned

for his excellent paper. The Chronicle
is growing in favor with our people.
We believe all of our merchants are now on

Dr. J. B. Hughey will farm this year.
Our town has a poet, who at present is busily
engaged on a poem, "Yes or No."
On account of the scarcity of oats some of
the farmers will resow their land, in wheat
and rye lor the purpose of feeding stock.
Wo understand that Miss Laura Wells will
return Mississippi in a few weeks with her
cousin Miss Cornelia Wells Who has been visiting
her.

Edward Jones an industrious and influential
old negro living on Dr. MlIIwee's place
died last week from Pyaemia, caused from
the cut of an axe during the freeze.

the return of their town property will have to

Mrs. Georgia Williams has filled the position
as postmistress quite efficiently during
the protracted illness of Dr. K. (I. Parks. We
are glad to learn that he contemplates being
at his post in a few days.

Rev. J. L. McLees of Pineville, N. C., is visiting
his mother, and it has been our pleasure
to hear him preach several excellent sermons.
Yesterday morning his subject was special
Providences, and last night lie preached a
very line and appropriate sermon from the
text. "Remember the .Sabbath day."

I see him leave, but feel that what we have lost,

Prof. S. P. 15oozer is a strong ad locate of education
and no one is doing more for the
youths of our country than he, but he denounces
our present tree school system especially

Mr. J.S. Chipley's little son about one and a
half years old, while standing near the flre
last week. Ills clothing caught tire, and he was
severely though not seriously, burned.
Dr. S. Swvcert has been summoned to ap
pear ns an expert in the Ferguson case. Dr.
Swygert, though a young man and but a few
months a resident of our village is building
up a line practice and gaining a reputation in
profession which older physicians might well
envy.
We notice Mr. J. X. Doncly of Troy on. our
streets to-day. Mr. Dendy has a host of
friends in our town, who are always glad to
j welcome him.
The citizens of Greenwood will soon organize
a Building and Loan Association. The demand
for houses and increased business relations
of our village, necessitates sveh il move.
