r;rVj?...c ~S.i.. . ' las Press and Banner By Hnjjh Wilson* "Wednesday, April 8, 1885. Sale r>?y. Very few persons were in town last Monday, nmi very little property of any kind was sold. The crowd was orderly, and nothing occurred >* > mar <he good order which prevailed ail lay. The farmers seein to be to < busy on l lie farm to waste time at this important seasov. Although winter has lagged in the lap oi >living the reports wouM lead Us to believe ll>at the farm work In the county Is fully vqual to the amount of work which h-is heretofore been done at this season in any ( reviou* year. In some localities we hear of unusually | targe areas bcinu plante<l In corn, which as a I rule is now coming up nicely, though there: aire instances where It would seem that early | ?danted corn Is not doing well, and in some; n stances It is thought the ground will have I to be re-seeded, as some of our friends have,; s? 1 ready sent us word to that effect. It is a; matter of regret if any man has lost his first) planting, though early pointing is the safe J rule. In farm ins, as in playing whist, it Is well to lot low the rules of the game. Though 1 ' > ihAmlu. cuufn Injvl I occasional iohscs umi uc n.v.v..,. vet in ilicciul, the whist player whoobsenes the rules of the sumo, and Uio farmer who'' plants atthe right time, will seldom full to come out right in the end. ; The report* as to the area planted in corn, ' Is really encouraging, and wc are led to Iiojvo : that ot.r people are beginning to realize the' necessity for raising fo<>U stuffs on the farm i While this is true, yet it is also true that Wag-1 un loads of Hagood s hay is daily hauled from ! town to the distant farms, which should grow < this Identical hay. Governer Ilagood raistsj grass on his farm near Cbappell's depot. He] sells It to our merchants at a small price, but:' l>y the time the freight is paid, and the nier-lj chant charges his profit tills liny Cosls the! Firmer about three times as milch as Govern- J or Hagood realizes for It. In addition to this enormous difference In thepriceat which If. is j' sold by Governor Hagood. otir farmers will | buckle up two horses, or two oxen, and spend' < n whole day in coming to town af:er it. i i Some thirty-live years ago, when the build-1 log of tlie Columbia and Greenville liailro td | Mas agitated, the speakers urged the road, not \ only as a necessity but as a matter of profit, | because with tiie railroad running through our county, we could ship our surplus wheat,! flour, corn, and bacon, and for several years |1 1 he greatest quantities of these articles were I shipped off to distant markets. Then We | \ bought but little from abroad. Nearly all the' < shipping was from this County, and but little I to it. Now everything is changed. We noL longer inise wheat or sell liour. except In very limited quantities. The flourishing mills of tlie County have in a majority of cases l5e- ' came unprofitable, and are not kept Up to the former high standard of excellence because 11 of the lack of grain to grind. Now, nobody ever thinks of shipping hams, wheat, flour corn or bacon. Instead of sending off their products the farmers buy nearly all their corn, bacon and flour, and st>cnd thousands[s of dollars annually for guanos. and thisi changed condition of aftalrs has crcatcd a ; demand.for a new railroad that we may have additional facilities for Importing every- j thins u?ed on tho farm. Before tho war no inan was considered | much of a farmer who was compelled to buy c corn, and such a thing a< pledging the crop to a merchant before it was planted, as a basis upon which to obtain credit, was unheard of. and It Is Imped with the past experience fresh in our memory, that we inaychanuc our mode of farming, and raise more of the food htutt's nt home. If Governor Hauood can I make money selling his hay at halt or one third what our people pay for It, we see no reason why our farmers cannot ndse it profitably. The greatest quantities of cotton land has been prepared, and it may be some fields have been planted, but I he great mass of the crop M ill not be planted for a while yot. ? Timely Benefit. > Mrs. Jacob Kara of this vlllnce received *" yesterday a chcck for ?!.U00 from the widow and orphan's Benefit Fund of the Knight# of 1 JI on or. This order was organized In our town " In 1*76 with ten charier members. It has now c t>n lis roll between fifty-five and sixty inetn- < hers, and has paid into this fund over So,i*W. e Mr. Ki:r/,'s Is the tlrst death which has occur- ( red among the inembeis of this Lodge. The 1' order of the Knights of Honor has grown *with wonderful rapidity in the United Srates. I It was established in lt>71, and has now about a l iO.Utt members. The objects of the order are c tated briefly by the supreme lodge, as fol- 1 lowst l.?t. To unite fraternally nil acceptable ' white inen of every profession, business or n occupation. v 2d. Instructive and scientific lectures, by T encouraging each other In business, and byjs assisting one nnoint'r iu uuuun i 3d. To promote benevolcncc aiul charity by , establishing it Widows and Orphans' Benefit U Fund, fiom which a sum not exceeding SJCKl ?i shall b-3 paid at t lie death of a member, lo liis C family, or as he may direct. ' 4th. To provide for the relief of sick and < distressful members. F oth. To amel'o<nto tl>c condition of liu* a inanity In every possible manner. ?VInri l?o?;?Several Persons RUIon. I.ast Wednesday nlsht, ados belonging tr> t Mr. K'ford Goddnrd, appeared nt the houses ? of sever-il colored Jpeople, nnd from theneo p went to the yard of Dr. W. T. Jones, where ho i \ killed some ducks. The noise among the v fowls aroused the Doctor's f.wnlly when a col- 0 oicd boy was sent Into the yard to investigate | j the causc he was met at the door step by the ^ do\j which bit. hlin on the arm and leg. The j: log then ran off, and was next seen atthe|(j house of Mr. ficorjc \V. Jones, where he cot i j into a fluht with another deg, when Mr. Mat- j tlson Hill, and Ills son Mr. William Hill, went j out to settle the disturbance, when the mad j do:; bit Mr. Hill on each leg, and bit the son j. In the breast. Father nnd son then got the d?>s down by o stick fastened over his ncck, \ ivhen an axo was brought, nnd the dog killed. \ The wound* of nil the parties were without \ delay cauterized by Dr. W, T. They now propose . to take steps to make the Railroad accountable for damages. liootl Work. The farmers between Abbeville and White Hall ore better up with their work than they have been at this season for many years. More land has bceu cleared than ever before. Nearly nil of it has hecn plowed and sonic of It has been planted. The edges of the fields have been nicely cleaned and the crops will come close to the road. In one or two Instances we think the farmers may have made ' mistakes in cutting down the bushes quite to the road, where the road Is lower than the ' cultivated lands. The tendency in such cases Is to wash away the good soil near the road. n Wolcome, thrice Welcome. u We extend to Dr. J. E. Neufler, of Orangehnrir n norilliil trreetln nnd a heartV welcome i. to our community. He conies us a medical J' doctorandas an authorized druggist. Having formed a partnership with Mr. P. B. We have no means of as- {J certaining the comparative number of white P and eolored petitioners, but we think the 11 number of colored signers is very small.
