Sale Day.
Last Monday was an Inclement day, with
cold winds ahd frequent shower*. The preceding
rains, together with ttiesho,rersof that
liny, made our public square more muddy
tlmn we have ever before seen It, and owing
to the hud weather ninny persons were prevented
from coming to town.
The lands which were so'.d lironght discouraging
figure*-, and nearly all the mi vei'tUed
sales were postponed. The Master sold a few
tracts, but the sale of by far the greater
amount of the properly which he was to sell,
was postponed until next Fall. The .Sheriff
sold nest to nothing, and the sales of the
Probate Judge were light.
The farmers with whom we talked seemed
In good spirits, and the majority of them will
po to work with greater energy and a greater
determination than ever to succeed.
The laborers, as a role, seem Inclined more
than ever to hlro for money wages, rather
than for part of the crop, ntul In some Instan.
es higher wnses have beeu demanded,
with slight concessions.
If we are to Judge of the whole by the expressions
of a few. the area in upland corn
Will be greatly Increased tills spring. If thls|
crop Ik n.anted early In March, tlie probability
Is, that a fairyleld will t>e the reward.
The following sales were made by the Master
on last Monday:
Lands of estate of Thomas Thomson, sold
tn the following tracts and parcels: Damn
tlon tract, 1,000 acre*, more or less. In three

Onr Farmer*.
While there is some complaint of hard
times, we pie?ume there Is not moreofdlsmiiriicremcnt
Mils vpiir than Is usual at this
Reason. While many of our farmers h?ve In* '
sufficient .quantities of foe: J supplb-s, yet the
low price at wlilch thc<e commodities are offered,
f r cash or on credit, imwx far t<? enable
oar people to look forward h(>i>efully to the
vrork ol another year. The hard times will
teach at least some of our farmers the importance
of planting mo e grain than (hey have <
heretofore done, and In this way our short
crop* and the consequent hanl times maybe ,
a blessing rather than a misfortune.
Soon after the war ihe price ol cotton was so
high, and the profits on nil>ing It wa? so seductive,
that the great ma?s of our planters
yielded to the temptation to raise big cotton
crops mid many of them seem not to realise
the fact that cotton Is now raised ?t ? .small j'
margin, and he who un<iertak>s to make the
cotton <-rop by securn^r provisions from tiie J
ato.es is a'most sure to be the loser I
One of the wotii features of the i len system, (i
Is the consequent habil which lal*>rers have''
fanned of not working on Saturdays?no mat-;i
ter how gre it Ihe need !orthei> presence on
the farm. Another great drawback to the far-1
iner which i? chargeable to the credit syslem,!
is the iosHof time in u'olng to the store* for
provisions in ttie bu.-leet weeks in the year. II
With our cxpc'-'l.-nce and observation, we
would si ve it as our opinion that any farmer
*no plants his c<irn early in March, can make
his own provisions cheaper tlian he cmti go
to tlie stores for theui?even If the merchant
dispensed them to the needy free of all1'
Charge. It is not the price which the farmer 11
pays forhlscorn that hurts. It is the losa oflj
time in coiug for it that ruins him. '
