A Hood Man Imposed Upon.
lleeently a gentleman of this village, j
who has a farm 011 the outskirts, was j
walking over his corn tield after the corn ;
had been gathered. He observed a negro j,
in a distant part of the field, and started
towards him. The negro walke>) off n'i
short distance, and on the gentleman's |
approach to the place where the negroj
was tirst seen 1k> observed a sack lying
in the grass. The negro explained that ]
he had gathered some of the corn which!'
had been left in the tield, supposing that!
the owner had no use for it. The gen- ,
tlenian being of a kindlv turn of mind, l,
told the darkey that he would not prose-,
uute him, but told him to carry the s;ick '
of corn to his home. The negro readily *
assented, whereupon the gentleman said ,1
he did not want him to gather his conn1
without compensation, and handed him 1
a sum of money which was a fair equiva- I
lent for the labor of gathering and taking i1
it to the house. The gentleman went his!
way, the negro departed, but, neither 'f
lie, the ;orn or the money have been seen i
since. The gentleman is out of liis corn 1
nnd inonev, too. 11

Horse Stealing. je
There seems to be a mania for horse' u
stealing. Recently a Mr. Fowler of An- ti
derson hired a horse to a man who rode j

seen since. Last Sunday a Mr. Chaffee i.
of Aiken hired a gray horse to a stranger j,
who wanted it for only two hours. The!
horse was tracked on Slond iy to within j.
