Death from Typhoid Fever.
Patterson Fraser, colored, died in a
house on the Alston house lot last Saturday
of typhoid fever, after an illness of
some two weeks, a^ed 23 years. He had
been employed to drive Mr. Sign's hearse
and was we'll known about here.
In his death we are admonished to renewed
efforts to prevent the spread of
this disease, which, in reality has more
terrors for os than Asiatic cholera. Let

result of cause, mid let no man forget
that that cause is too often the use of contaminated
water. While we are examining
and sweeping the face of our lots
that they may present an agreeable appearance
to the eye, let us not forget to go
even beneath the surface in our effort to
prevent the approach of this most dreadful
disease. For the benefit of those who
may rely too much on the neutralizing
effect of lime, we would state that one
end of the house in which FRiser died
was and has been a room for the storing
of lime, and immediately in front
of that house perhaps hundreds
of barrels of lime had been slaked and
put into mortar lor the now hotel now in
course of erection. From this it will be
seen that disinfectants arc not an infallible
safeguard when the cause exists.
The house in which Fraser lived, and the
well from which these people used water
is near to a place which should have had
attention years ago?not only from those
inore directly interested, but from the
town council also.
Typhoid fever may be produced very
easily. For instance, our neighboring
town of Ninety-Six suffered from this
disease last year, and upon investigation
and after comparing notes, the fever was
found to have visited only the houses
where rats had been poisoned. The rats
had gone into the ceiling and other places
before dying, and the offensive smell
which they emitted produced the fever in
every instance.
A damp or wet cellar, a few rotting
potatoes or decaying cotton seed in the
eloset, or even the lack of sullicieut sunshine
and ventilation in any part of the
house may bring the disease.
Let every man clean his lot, air house,
ana give special attention to me wen
from which lie uses water. Typhoid lever
conios in one of two ways, either
from the water which we drink, or in the
air which we breathe. It behooves every
citiHeu to be on hi* guard, ami our friends
in town or country, need not blame Providence
if they neglect the well known
Jaws of health, and death comes to their
doors.
Marriage.
Mr. John C. Bailey, editor of the Greenville
Enterprise and Mountaineer, and
Miss Laura (Jaulden of Ninety-Six, were
married last Thursday, July 31st, by the
ltev. Mr. Lander, ol Williamston, at the
home of the bride's father, Mr. John
Uaulden, who is one of the most prosperous
farmers in that section. The ceremony
was performed immediately alter
the arrival of the down train, and the
bridal party boirded the up train, an hour
or two later. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey are off
on a trip to Asheville and other place* of
sight-seeing, and the guests have all returned
to the humdrum of daily life. Of
the bride and groom we hardly know
which to congratulate most.
Mr. Bailey's energy and pluck has
heretofore enabled him to print one of
.tiie best newspapers In the State, and
with the assistance of so talented and accomplished
a wife as ho has secured, the
paper will henceforth be still improved.
In that event we believe the reading public
of Greenville county are to be congratulated
as much as anybody else. Mrs.
Bailey had been for several years one of
the most successful and highly prir.ed
teachers in the YViHiamston Female Col-,
lege, and that, institution has lost one of I
its main stays.
The editor of the Press awl Banner J
was present at the wedding, and brings
home with him a sweet remembrance of
tho pretty guests whom he met.
Our Crops.
The generous rains which fell in almost!
every part of the county list week have '
* revived the sutfering crops and cheered
the hearts of despoudinu farmers. While I
there are a few exceptions to the rule, yet!
the crops of corn which had been planted j
on bottom lands have been at- j
most totally ruined. The excessive rains i
about the first of July in many instances :
ruined everj' paiticlcof tho corn, while j
small ^portions of this crop escaped:
complete ruin. There was only a small,
amount of corn planted on upland, but
the small area will yield all that the land
is capablo of producing under the most
favorable circumstances. Tho cotton on!
red lands is superb, while the crop which ;
was planted in sandv lands is more ori
....,1 I
ions iiijuicu cvcij n uric, aiiu in m?ui > 111* >
stance's the crops on such lands may be
set down as a complete failure. The oat;
crop turned out well, despite the rains'
and unfavorable circumstances attending;
the harvesting. Th6 wheat crop was the1
best that we h?ve had for years, but much ;
of it was injured by sprouting. Our lar-;
mers, we think, will hereafter cap their!
small grain in the shock in the Held, j
Grain that was thus protected was noti
very much injured.
The result ol the whole matter is, that
our merchants have credited out as inueh
on the crops as it is safe to risk, except in !
exceptional cases. The majority of the}
farmers will make enough cotton to pay j
out, but laeir food crops will be exceed-1
ingly short in Dece.nber, but many far-;
mers have already commenced to sow i,
oats for another crop.

Temperance Meeting: ftt Shiloh.
There was a pic nic and temperance ]
meeting at Shiloh last Saturday, which :
was largely attended. There was a profusion
of the good things in the baskets,
and the speeches were able and impressive.
Worthy Patriarch James W. lluckabee
presided, and introduced the speakers
in the following order:
Prof. George C. Ilodges, of Ninety-Six ;
Rev. J. S. Mattison, of Anderson village ;
Rev. Dr. W. M. Grier, of Due West; H.
G. Scudday, Esq., of Anderson village.
The meeting passod off exceedingly
pleasant, and nothing occurred to mar
the pleasure of any one. About one
thousand persons were present, and a
grap-beardod candidate says there were
more pretty women on the ground than
he ever saw at one time.
Upper Long: Cane Grave Yard.
Persons interested in this cemetery will
meet on the grounds to-morrow to clean
up and make the grounds more in accord
with the requirements of the home of
our dead. At this meeting it is also
hoped that arrangements may be perfected
bv which the grounds may be kept
nicely. A sexton will probably bo elected
for the purpose of digging the graves
and keeping the groundf in order. In
connection with this, we would suggest
that arrangements be made by which the
grave-digger shall also till the grave after
the depqsit of the corpse. The practice
of calling upon by-standers to do this
work is objectionable for more reasons
than one?none of which need be mentioned
here.
The grave yard committee will meet at
Mr. W. C. Ben et's office at 4 o'clock this
(Wednesday) evening.
Death of Miss Douglass.
Ono of the saddest deaths which have
occurred in this village for a long time
was that of Miss Mary Essie Douitlass, a
most estimable young lady, who died last
Sunday night of typhoid fever, after one
week's illness. She was at church on the
Sunday night before her death. She died
as she bad lived, a sincere Christian, having
been called hence after a very short
illness. In hor death we aie admonished
that in the midst of life we are in death,
and that we should also be ready for the
dreadful summons.
Death of Mrs. Wilson.
Mrs. George W. Wilson, nee Miss Mary
Fair Marshall, died at Asheville, N. C.,
at 1 o'clock Sunday night, after a protracted
illness. Although the event was not
unexpected, it creates a natural sorrow
and sympathy in the hearts of a large circle
of friends. The deceased was a daughter
of the late Hon. Foster Marshall, ol
AfTbeville, and had resided -in Florida
since her marriage, about eighteen
months ago, until failing health induced
her to seek recuperation at Asheville.

Richmond, Va., Principal; Miss Helen

This bridge at Morton's mill was a
