In the first place, theattendHiiee of peoplo w;is small?in fact, the ciHididates for the various oflices pretty much made up the crowd. It was a capital day for farming purposes, and it was gratifying to see that our farmers appreciated* this fact and gave their attention to the crops. The colored element was evidently busily engaged and very few of that class were in town. The County Convention held an interesting and pleasant session. In this respect the meeting was highly creditable to Abbeville County. Kvenncss of to nper in debate is an admirable quality and should be assiduously cultivated. There was no disposition to cut o(f debate and thus prevent members from discussing fully the various questions proposed. It is fair and rijjht and well that public measures be thoroughly ventilated. The new County Chairman presided with ease and dignity. His part in the day's proceedings was characterized by the utmost fairness. It is to be hoped that our Democratic meetings hereafter may be equally ns> pleasant and interesting. u Look Oiitw" Just after the freshet last week, a little darkey undertook to walk across a "wash out" on the cross-ties of the Railroad. The dirt had been carried aw iv, but the rails And cross-ties were still in pla-o. The rails were kept together by the connecting irons, and the cross-ties were suspended in their proper places by the nails through the bars and in the wood. W bile a numtier of men, some fifteen or twenty feet below in the water, were at work repairing the injury, a little darkey came along, and undertook to walk on I the cross-ties. When just over the men his weight pulled the nails out of a cross-tie which held it to the iron. Instantly the cross-tie and little negro fell among the men and into the water. The little darkey made a safe plunge into the water, but the cross-tie grazed one of the men, and came ne$r killing him. In railing the little darkey cried ?look out," , but before anybody below realized the danger, it was all over. I>r. Gary was called to sec the scared man, but it was soon ascertained his contact with the cross-tie had hurt the man loss than the scare. The Extra Train on Monday. As usual tfie extra train on Monday brought to the countv-seat a number of people from Ninety Six, Greenwood and llodges. It is pleasant to see 011 our: Streets so many excellent gentlemen from these towns and the country adjacent to them. This commingling and interfiling- j ling of the people of the county from various sections accomplish good in various ways. The better the peoplo know each j Other, the freer will they be from local j prejudices and petty jealousies. We are indebted to Col. Haskell and the rail-, frnid authorities for these extra trains, nnd we hope they will provo remunerative to the railroad. Let the extra train bo continued year in and year out. Davis Johnson died at Ninety-Six i last Saturday, 5th July, 1884, aged about twenty-four years, lie had been sick ttbout throe weeks of typhoid fever, lie was a practical printer of excellent character. and his death is much regretted by, all who knew him. We attest our appro-' elation of his personal worth, and ex!tress deep regret at the sad event, which nis <Jast a gloom over the neighborhood j iu which he lived. . , Runaway?>'arrow Escape. One day while Mr. John F. Miller, hnerchant" of our town, was driving in ' the country, his horse became frightenod, | ran, and overturned the sulky. .Mr. Miller's foot became fastened in tlie wheel and he was dragged some distance. Finally his shoo was torn and his foot re-j leased* A little soreness aitd a swollen i atlklc was the result. A Good Police Force. Tho order on Monday was admirable. The streets were free from boisterous and disorderly conduct. Abbeville lias reason to congratulate herself on the admirable Order which our excellent town marshal and bis assistants maintain. Rude, boisterous behavior on the streets is not al-j lowed here. Mr. Tiios. F. Jackson*, tho olnest1 man in town, died last Thursday, and was huricdat Upper Long Cane Cemetery : beside the devoted daughters who were so j recently buried there. Mr. Ja;kson was fcoibe eighty-six years of age, and was greatly respected all his life. He was. one of the founders of the Episcopal church at this place, and his death removes one of the links which bound us to the past. "A house! a horse! my kincdom for! a horse!" If King Richard had lived in Abbeville, and stood in need of a good i farm horse he could navo bought onei from Mr. John W. Sign for a much less| price than a kingdom. Since King Richard made the above extravagant ofFer for a horse, the market value of tho noble j animal has gone down to a small figure.' if von don't believe it call on Mr. Sign,j and be amazed at the great bargain which ~ he offers. tf j The advertisement of the Duo West Female College appears in another col-! limn. Delay not another year. Send your daughter to the Due West Female College. It is the best institution of the j kind in tho South. It has the largest > corps of professors and teachers, more j splendid apartments, and more tine pianoes than are to be found elsewhere. | For style, accomplishment, art, and j classic training, we would commend j Due West. The citizens of the Coronaca section j filed their objections last Monday to re-j building Boyd's Mill bridge which is washed away. They want the County Commissioners to give a full and fair: consideration to all tho petitions that; have been presented in regard to this bridge. As soon as tho Laurens Commissioners show a disposition to act in concert with ours, .ueps will be taken to decide the matter. The people up near Monterey want inore road accommodation and have petitioned for a public highway leading to- I wards Rocky River Church. Thcro is home objection to the road, but the peti- j tion is bfeing advertised and will bedis-i posed of in the regular way. The public meeting and the speekers' at Greenwood on the 17th instant will be! Under the auspices of the Democratic! Club. The barbecue is a private enter- j prise, and 11 fly cents is charged for dinner. The ball is given by the Grocn-1 \vood Social Club. The County Commissioners will hold: a special meeting next Monday to audit claims and take their financial bearings J in view of the effects of the late freshet, j The subject of repairing the damage to the bridges chiefly engaged their attcn- j tion on saleday. Mr. t. W. Adams, who has been em-1 ployed in the Press and Banner oilice for j several months, will go to Anderson this week, to help print the Anderson Jour nal. Success to him in his new Lome, j lie has our best wishes. Saturday night was bountiful and clear, with a bright full moon, and our people made parlors of their front piazzas. Before morning the clouds obscured the moon and threatened rain, which did not come. Mr. J. M. Gamurell has been ?n<-k in bed with a cold. He is better now, and is able to be on the streets. lie went on a visit to Williamston Saturday and returned Monday. We have received a handsomely printed invitation to the grand ball to be given nt Greenwood on the niirht of the 17th instant. If possible, it will be our pleasure to attend. There will be a barbecue at Hodges on Friday the first day of August. Itoth Congressional and County delegates are expected to be there. The*public generally invited. The colored base ball club went to Greenville on Thursday evening of last week, and on the Fourth beat the Greenville colored club by a handsome score. The preliminary survey of the proposed railroad from Abbeville to Verdery is being made. Abbeville must have a new railroad by some means. Col. Silas JoiNEs of White Hall shipped his oats by the water route. He has as yet received no return for their sale, ana he is not expecting my, either. Mrs. Kerr lias an orcuaro or tne nicest poaches in Abbeville. She will accept our thanks for a kind remembrance in a bafiket of fine fruits Samuel Abel has been appointed Superintendent of highways for Ceiar Springs Township in place ol J. L. Drennon, resigned, The Abbeville Brass Band plays belter than any band of its age in America. Last week they gaye some delightful serenades. Doer. H. D. Wilson, entertain will the Abbeville Literary Club at the Commercial Hotel Friday evening, 11th inst. Rev. J. B. Mack, D. D., will preach in the Presbyterian church next Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The crops were never grassier than now. There is not 0110 field in ten that does not need the plow and the hoe. All the exercises of the Institute, ineluding attendance upon lectures, etc., will be free of charge. Teachers and citizens of South Carolina, and of other States, are cordially invited to attend. This Institute is held under authority of State law, and is authorized to confer certificates, qualifying persons to bold positions as teachers in tins State for one. two or three years, without further examination ; and also, on the completion of a three years' course, a Normal Diploma, exempting the holder from further examination during life. The Course of Instruction covers all the subjects required by the School Law of this State, and adapted to the most important wants of teachers equally in public and in private schools. The examinations at the close of the course are ottered equally to all. These examinations are voluntary; but an attendance of three weeks is required to entitle any person a certificate. Persons not candidate for certificates may attend the whole or any part of the course. Ample arrangements will be made for the reception aud accommodation of teachers and others attending the Institute. Good board can be had at :*4.00 a week. Spartanburg offers a delightful summer climate, and is noted for the hospitality of its people. The buildings, library, etc., of Woll'ord College will afford every facility for the work of the Institute.
