Christmas in Abbeville.
f The Christmas holidays of Abbeville
have been marred by n<> untoward event,
and the young people have had .several
delightful evenings.
Mr. E. <?. Gravdon inaugurated the
movement and invited q-iited a party of
our young ladies and young gentlemen t? i
his house on Wednesday night whore al
was merriment and mirth until a latei
hour. A superb supper was a fitting
lose to the happy eveninir. This party i
was given in honor of the beautiful Misv
Sallie Tompkins, of Kdgetield, who j
was on a visit to her cousin, Mrs. (Jray
don.
Oil Friday night the voting people had i
a most pleasant gentian at Mrs. S. W.
Smith's, whore our own voting people '
and the visitors in town won; most do- I
gantly entertained. Here youth ami
beauty met to chase the hours away.
On Slum lay night, tin' last night <>f the
year, I)r. I'arkt r gave i gentian at which
Was assembled an array of heautv ami |
manly grace seldom equalled and never
excelled.
On Friday night, qnito a nnmber of;
our beautiful young ladies, and their escorts,
accepted invitations to the house of j
Mrs. Oscar Cromer, where they spent a I
most delightful evening, returning to
their homes with many thanks to the fair
hostess for the opportunity of the enjoy- ;
ment which had been afforded.
Capt. Hon ham had a number of gentlemen
at his house on Christmas morning
to participate in an egg nog, where eon-!
viviality, good cheer, and good will to i
tnen reigned supremo for an hour.
Judge McGoivan give a most elegant j
dinner to a number of his friends on Friday
evening. The Judge entertains in a
most princely manner, and all who vvetej
{>resent on that occasion say that, for tlie j
>eautyand elegance of the arrangements, j
for the superiority and appropriateness of;
the viands, none could have surpassed it. j
These are only a few of the incidents of
the week. Resides these, there were few !
families at whose festal UAards, esteemed
friends and honored guests did not ap-j
v pear on Christmas day.
It might l>e remarked that wo have]
never seen a Christinas where the amuse- ,
ment was less innocent than during this j
Christmas week. There was almost lit
erally no drinking, and none of the hois- j
terous or vulgar exhibitions, which char- i
notorized the conduct of the people of:
some other towns, was apparent here. I
There was really nothing here hut good
humor and kindly feeling, mixed with
innocont pleasure.
Important to Tnx-Pajers.
The attention of our citizens is called
to the fact that returns to the Town Council
must he made on or before the first'
day of February next. The Clerk of the
Council Is required by law to add twenty |
}>cr cent, penalty to all persons who nee-1
oct or refuse to'make their returns. Thej

paid her every honor, and all regret her
departure.
Although last Tuesday was New i

vet the Treasurer could not refuse
the money for tho whiskey tax, of a hundred
dollars each, from about a dozen retail
dealers. The receipts had been' .vritten
and s!gned the day before in anticipation.
The weather, last week, after Monday
was most pleasant. We have searcelv 1
realised that tho Winter has set in. If
we do not have more cold weather, we 1
will have to condole with those who have
wood to sell, as we'.i as with those who
hare laid in an abundant supply of fuel, j

one. The vestry extended a call to him
to the pastorate of the congregation,
which, wo regret to say, he declined.
According to previous notice the)
stores in Abbeville wore closed on Christ- i
mas day, ar.d the dullness, together with
the scarcety of persons on tho public ,
