Death of Thomas ( . Euright.
Mr. Thomas G. Fnright, died at his
home in the Flat Woods last Monday, af- j
ter a lingering illness, aged twenty-four;
years. He was a native of Abbeville
Village, and highly respected by those!
who knew him, and was regarded us aj
conscientious and upright citizen bvi
tli >so who had business transactions with j
him. For several years he has labored to'
increase the church fund, and up to the'
time of his death had accumulated a con-!
siderablo fund from the rents of the;
church property, and in his will he left'
the greater part of his own estate to thoj
church, to be built at Abbeville. It is:
thought that by his will the church fund 1
will lie increased to about three thousand
dollars, which would insure the erection
of a Catholic Church in our \il-j
lage. .
The Storm.
We had quite a storm last Monday :

of considerable violence in many seclions
of the Conntv, we have heard of no

Letter from a Practical Farmer.
We are having rain, rain, all the while,
too much even for small sjrain on wet
land. I man-ijicd t?> tr?*t in I .'JO acres it|?t<>
loth November, and most of it is verv
lino. I sowed 1:20 acres stubble, with my
Chicago seiv.v plow, when the land was
like a pavement, by going over ilirw
times, put it in splendidly. Now the
grain is beautiful. The drivers, feed of
?ix mule-, cost per day ; ran go over
lit to 2(1 aeres per day, ones time. Col.
Miller put in iiO acres river bottom in
eleven days, when the land was. so dry,
hard as to track open. It did the work
ell'eett ally, cost .VJ cents per acre.
I adopted a cheap plan to manure land
for wheat. In September sowed 10 acres
then gravelly land in rye; grazed until
March; last April, when it was ;> feet
hiirh an 1 in bloom, turned under in May,
planted in peas, appl vim; 100 pounds acid
phosphate per acre. Harrowed twice
across, ran with smoothing harrow, then
plowed ? ver with sweep. Made ;i crop of
peas, turned on hogs, m November sowed
in wheat. The pulverizer cutting up
vines and leaving them as a mulch on
top. For such land, the \\ heat is extraor- j
dinary. From present prospects, you
bud he*t withdraw your forces from the
valleys, prepare the ridges and hilltops
for corn. ltiee might do better, in the]
bottoms. C?. |

railed to order by the Inteiidant, Mr. Jus.)

meeting, which he readily did, showing)
the advantages of Bailroads in general j
and especially the Savannah Valley!
Railroad intersecting al this place. Mr. j
Harmon alter having addressed die meet-;
iug, delegates were then appointed to attend
a meeting at Liberty, which was to
Iim nn |)r. M. A_ Trnvlor. I
and Mr. Jus. Cothran, were appointed to ,
atten I the meeting on 21st. This was;
just simply a culled meeting of t!ie eiti- i
zens of this place, at which about &">00.()0l
wore raised ami it it; the intention having |
a general meeting hero, ami hear from I
the strength of our country. The citi-i
zens of this place are now high spirited'
ond the Railroad she wants, and if oner- !
gy, will, and money can accomplish any-J
tiling, all these are thrown in the con-j
test and success must certainly he the re- j
suit in such courses of our common citi- i
zens in this prosperous country.
All we ask now is for every citizen toi
look to the interest of this road and after
its completion we emphatically announce
the Railroad will look to the interest of
the people. Cash her now ami we can
safciysaytliatshew.il doubly pay you
for your trouble. Can Augusta, who is
well able, sutler t ? see such an important
feeder pass by and not dr'*p in her,
trough one feed. We hardly think it possible.
It passes through the richest pari:
of this county along the Savannah River,
where cotton can be seen slacked up by
the one hundred bil.;s, ami will Augusta
sutler to see this immense trade drill away ;
from her. The country in general seems
to be spirited in regard to its success. (
What is the use'.o pay for grading the
road to where it is and then not push
itthri'Ugh? This is useless and absurd.
Dr. J. A. <?ibert, Caj tain Hester, Dr.
Iiesterand President Latimer, are busily!
engaged ill its behalf ami we wish them
all the success, and hope their etfurls will
prove to be a success. We hope every j
one will soon see the necessity of this
road, and go to work with the heart and
mind, Verv Respectfully.

The town council ?>(" Ninety-Six, a few

of hundred dollars for tint purpose of
making a survey of a railroad now in
contemplation from Greenville to Port
Kn.vul via Ninety-Six. This is a move in
the right direction. The road will rnn
from Greenville down through the fertile
country between the Saluda ami Reedy
Rivers, crossing the former near Smith's
Kerry, and tapping the Spartanburg,
Greenwood and Augusta Ruilroail and
('oranaea. Look at the map ol the State,
and apply a little mathematics and logic,
and it will be seen that the shortest, most
direct, and most feasible route to "Deep
