Messrs. Thomas A. Cobb and George
\V. Lomax have selected a location for a
saw-mill within a few hundred yards of
Verdery. This mill will be placed on land
belonging to Mr. John McNeill. We hope
to hear at an early day the hum of their
busy saw.
A dwelling occupied by Mr. W. A.
Harhuck caught tire on last Wednesday
about 10 o'clock, A. M. The tire caught
on the roof of the house near the chimney
and was making c< nshlerahlc headway
when two colored men, after much exertion,
succeeded in extinguishing it. One
of these men got his hand badly burned
while putting out tho lire;. They doservo
gre it credit for tho faithful manner
in which they worked.
Olio day last week while a youug lady
was on her way to Verdcry, a bolt of the
buggy in which siio was riding .suddenly
broke. The horse at oneo sprang forward,
drawing after hiin the lore wheels
ot the buggy and the young lady, (she
held on to the reinx) dragging her about
ten paces before stopping. Fortunately
she was unhurt. When the fright wan
over she even had tho eourage to hitch
the hor.se and then draw the buggy out
of the road.
There is a certain young man in
Verdery who, in company with a married
gentleman, visited a strange neighborhood
a few days ago. Now it happened
while there the young man got acquainted
with a young lady. The young lady
afterwards remarked that she liked lift
looks of this young man very well, bill
she liked tho looks of the other u'.-ntieman
mu'-h the bo.-t. This young gentleman
